I passed A level maths (grade 2) 60 years ago and enjoy maths problems, but this confused me. . To me, logically negative 4 times 2 over 3 is negative 8 over 3.

It's not multiplication, it's addition. "Negative four and two thirds"
@scottmartin9041

its just the way its written that confusing you. it (-4 2/3)is a number not -4 X 2/3 or -4 . 2/3

when I see fractions I think about pies.... the 2/3 means a pie cut into thirds with 1 gone. The 4 is four full pies If they are also cut into thirds there would be 4 × 3 = 12 sections. So there's 2 3rds and 12 3rd for a total of 14 3rds = 14/3..

After 40 years it was just like riding a bike - *Multiply the whole number to the denominator then add the numerator, keeping the denominator the same, 3. Because of the one negative, the negative will remain.

thanks for your math problems & help . . . I really like testing myself with them & reviewing ! This one is written strangely out of proportion with the 4 looking so small & the 2/3 looking so tall & big and the - sign looks oddly too large as well, same size as the line between the 2 & 3 fraction. . . but still only one way around it to solve . . . just looks weird & could throw some people off I suppose- but not if you have fractions down. -

Took about 5 seconds ?? I guess what really bothers me is that "many will get it wrong" ? This is such basic math that I cannot imagine not knowing it after maybe 5th grade ?

I went too fast and multiplied 12 by 2 instead of adding. So, I check all your boxes: Going too fast and being too confident because I saw - 24/3 in the choices. :( I offer myself as an example proving your demonstration. ;) We can know something and still make a mistake because we don't take the time. I knew how to solve this but my mind played a trick on me. BTW, I totally understand the way mutltiple choices are designed. Clever and effective!

That's horrible notation! I would read that as negative 4 multiplied by 2/3 (i.e. -8/3).
@dazartingstall6680
@dazartingstall6680 6 месяцев назад
If multiplication were intended it would be written −4(⅔) or −4 × ⅔. Mixed fractions like 4⅔ are always treated as a single unit, ie, in this case, as 4.66666...
@christopheroliver148
@christopheroliver148 6 месяцев назад
@@dazartingstall6680 No! What I'm suggesting is that mixed fraction notation is a horrid thing. I would never parenthesize that way. Outside of perhaps a kitchen recipe, I'd far rather see an improper fraction which is a clear notation for a rational number than the awful mixed fraction notation which should simply go away. We're not setting kids up for future mathematical success by continuing with that botch.
@dazartingstall6680
@dazartingstall6680 6 месяцев назад
@@christopheroliver148 I get what you mean but I think you're seeing problems where none exist. In 57 years on this Earth I've never yet met anyone who misinterpreted a mixed fraction. 1½ is readily understood by all as one and a half. And while ³⁄₂ would certainly be just as readily parsed, I doubt we could say the same for, for example, ³⁰⁶⁄₇ as opposed to the more obvious 43⁵⁄₇. It seems to me you're reducing, not introducing, clarity.
