Hello, I am from Panama with my heritage spanning back to Jamaica and Nicaragua. I think this is a great video but we must also address the racism and ignorance within our own Latin culture. For example, no offense to Dominicans but a lot of them are in denial and ashamed of their African Heritage. Growing up in Brooklyn, NY I have seen many Dominicans deny calling themselves black when their features (Skin color, Hair texture, voluptuous shape, luscious lips, etc.) clearly scream Africano! I have seen countless Dominicans and Puerto Ricans in NY getting their hair done in Dominican salons trying to smooth the "Nappiness" of their hair with imported shampoos, conditioners, and "PERMS" from Dominican Republic. Getting Keratin treatments and Brazilian blowouts religiously to hide the last remaining clue (Nappy, coarse hair) of their African Heritage. why does being black equate with such negativity when us as black people accomplished so much throughout the Caribbean. Maybe if we studied our history in greater detail we would all stand proud to be known as Afro-Antilleans/Afro-Latinos/Afro-Caribbeans. We contributed so much to our Latin culture which is evident in our food, music, language, etc. So go put on some Merengue and shake what your black Mama gave you!!

This was posted on the day my daughter was born. She has just the smallest amount of Mexican blood but I want her to be proud of all parts of her heritage.

Are you still working on this project? This is so interesting to me. Many non-Hispanic people are ignorant to the fact that Afro Latinas(os) exist.

I love to see my people expressing themselves whether Latino, Blasian, Native indigenous, American or whatever it's a diaspora to be sure! Much love familia!

This entire post proves to me old white america succeeded in dividing us all by making us feel as if white was the goal or prize to life. (like it even matters what color we are) They made us ashamed of darker skin. They made us feel hostile toward darker skinned people. They attached safety and financial gain to our shades of color. So we would be forced to pass or in about 4 or5 generations of adding lighter shades to our bloodlines breed out the Afrika. We fight and put each other down. We get distracted then start to focus on lesser points. I guess white america has us where it wanted us.

@ odilia. Culturally there has been a different approach to how blacks were treated in America vs. Latin America. The U.S had the one drop rule and in Latin America you could choose whatever you wanted but hoping moreso to be classified as white. The problem in both cases is that you were and are still oppressed. The only reason that blacks in America have fared better in terms of making headway in the media is because even if you were part white or any other race you had to classify as black which forced us to work together. If afrolatinos want to make headway you have to unify under the african culture which is no easy feat since it has been an opposing thought process for generations. Also uniting with African Americans drawing the similarities of history together and form a unity.

I like your video and I'm also trying to find more information on Afro-Latino because I'm beginning to think some of my paternal ancestry includes Latin.

This is sooo true I'm glad they did this. I'm a dark Cuban and identify more as African American. My abuela says that I only can date Latino men that look light or white so that my kids could look Latino.

This is a great idea! What happened with this project? The donation page is closed. Is the film still being made? If not a web series could be an other option and a means for fundraising.

Proud Louisianian here and welcome and love our Latina and Latino bro's. We share a love to cook southern cuisine and crawfish, shrimp and crab boils to our visitors here.

I'm so sad that I just discovered this documentary now at 4 yrs. This is definitely a subject that society needs to be educated on especially sad too say many Latinos need this education. I myself identify as a Puerto Rican of African decent, and a lot Puerto Rican don't no there heritage or even know that there are Puerto Rican of African decent. Yet they celebrate Roberto Clemente, Felex Trinadad, and Peto conde Rodriguez and forget that these people just to name a few are black! Hispanic need to be educated more as well as American media. There would be no salsa, capoeira, Santeria and most of the food in Latin America without Africa!

Marta I. Cruz (Cruz-Janzen) Emeritus Professor Florida Atlantic University This is wonderful. ¡Echando pa’lante con ganas y coraje! I am MOST joyful of/with so many Latinegras/os (AfroLatinas/os) standing tall and raising their voices; more and more and more each day. When I began work in this area 25-20 years ago, the topic was not only unaccepted across contexts (academic, social, political, etc.), but significantly DENIED by Latinos/Hispanics - including Black Latinos/Hispanics. I began to validate my self-identity as Latinegra, honoring Zenon Cruz who raised the issue of racism within and between Latinos/Hispanics in the 1970s but was blatantly refuted by Latinos/Hispanics themselves. I was stunned by Latinos/Hispanics in many different settings, including scholarly and sociopolitical, telling me that I was a liar, exaggerating, confused, “viendo y buscando fantasmas” (seeing and searching for ghosts). My research was too qualitative (narrative lived experiences of real people) and, thus, too biased and subjective; thus, not valid enough. Often told I was the one who was a racist because, after all, I was the one focused on race and racism while most other (normal) Latinos/Hispanics were united through culture and nationality rather than color and race. There was no racism within and/or between Latinos/Hispanics, who did not see color and, if they did, it did not matter. After all, we were happily united happy people, happily accepting of everyone. After all, to be called “negra” and “negrita” was always out of love (endearment). Latino/Hispanic media was fair and respectful, inclusive of ALL Latinos/Hispanics. Even when somewhat believed, I was openly criticized for putting our “trapos al aire” (dirty laundry in public) for everyone to see (including us). After all, we had/have to remain together in order to be counted as one people within the USA. We could not publicly show any division(s) that made us appear weak - and controllable. So, here we are today! Finally shouting to everyone across the world, including Latinos/Hispanics, that we ALL must stop pretending not to see the elephant(s) in each of our living rooms - Y tu abuela, a’onde esta? - that ALL humans came out of Africa and are of the same ONE race; that undeniably everyone, including Latinos/Hispanic, has ancestry in back of their living physical and mental selves. It is long overdue that we proudly bring our ancestries upfront to be seen by each of us, each other, and everyone. We must - together - keep moving ahead. We must keep talking - with each other and everyone - spreading our voices. Latinegras/os of all nationalities across this world must COME TOGETHER and loudly SPEAK TOGETHER in order to be seen and heard unequivocally and powerfully. We must unite our hands to PULL EACH OTHER and US ALL TOGETHER - pull UP and OUT of the divide and conquer shackling crab cage of internalized self-oppression. Rather than be called a colour we should refer to our ancestry and cultural origin whether that be Afro American, that is Afro Caribbean, Afro Latino etc. it’s happening slowly which makes me happy. We’ve got to identify with our heritage

It sounds like in Latin countries, the history of slavery isn't taught or is taught very little. It sounds like the people are taught that everyone had the same history, when that is NOT the case in most Latin countries. If Afro-Latinos understood that their physical appearance and much of Latin culture is derived from Africa, they would probably identify more with their roots. History (true history) gives you perspective on how things came to be and I think that is missing for many Afro-Latinos and Latinos in general. Not that Afro-Amer have a much better perspective, we are confused as well. It's just that segregation kept us more in tune with reality.

No one wants to be black because the Europeans made it to mean unhuman and demeaning. Most people that i have met from the Dominican Republic actually look black. I think that they just to to learn to live with and accept their appearance. I remember the baseball player named Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates, he is from the Dominican Republic and he is dark-skinned. I understand your intentions were to use the term tio help you identify as black and afro-latin@. however, this kind of marginalizes another group of people, actual Nubian people...

It seems the Afro-Latinos has it misconstrued that if they say that they are Afro-Latina, people will automatically think of all the negative stereotypes of African Americans and apply them to the Latino heritage. That's not the case. When someone tells me or I see that their Afro-Latin--yes it's obvious--I think about their Latina culture--what, where, how it was growing up Latina? I don't think about negative at all. There's nothing wrong with the term Afro-Latina.
