I just got done watching the video where you were talking about how you cobbled together that fire rig. nice to see it protecting your property, & helping out a neighbor at the same time.
Good job on knocking down that range fire. I lived in western Nevada years ago and saw a number of them. I live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and we see brush and timber fires every year.
Go at it from the burned side and use a good old corn broom and “sweep” the flames. Works like a charm on grass fires and is very quick at putting them out.
Surprised by how effective the first knock down was. I'm not for fire country, so don't know much. Was thinking that the patches of fire missed the first time around would blow back up to big wide area by the time you came back around. But clearly this wasn't the case and these areas were easily picked up on the way back. Goes to show that a quick knock back can be real helpful then come around for mop up.
Drive in the Black, not in the fuel. Drive where it has already burned so you do not get caught in the fire. Adding a pressure washer to the rig will give you better water pressure and still not using too much water. It will help with reach but also penetrate down into the grass.
Interesting slip on unit setup but quite effective despite using garden hose nozzle to combat a running pasture fire here in Australia most farm units in rural areas use same or similar nozzles and hose lines as the local rural volunteer brigades and carry between 100-265 gallons which in Australian liters is 400-1000 litres and sometimes even up to 1800 litres on tandem trailers what kinda pump you running to use minimal amount of water
@@jrockyhill ah nice a modest trash pump very effective with a 37 litres per minute flow out of the nozzle fairly effective for a slow moving pasture fire I've seen similar setups using heavy duty garden hoses here in South Australia as first attack lines on grass fires and mopping up I am going to be putting together a trailer unit over winter consisting of a 400 litre (100 gallon) tank either a 8 hp fire pump or 1.7hp high flow water pump ready and layflat 20 metre hose for our fire season that starts in late november
You were leaving too much open fire behind you. You need to make sure you put it out before moving on or it will come from behind and get you. Also the fire that was left behind will just take off and keep burning. I will say this though...I am impressed you are alone, driving and doing mobile attack. Awesome! Be safe brother
I was hoping the other guy was following up behind me but the threat level of it getting much farther than where it was was pretty low so I was trying to do a fast attack but it did read light and burn around where I put out a couple of times and it also sucked because it was a super uneven fireline which makes it hard to do a good mop up
@@jrockyhill that’s why you don’t freelance and try and fight it all by yourself, that’s why you call in the fire department, glory hunting is gonna get you hurt.
I've been doing a lot of thinking about going high-pressure. But they are super expensive. With the high-flow I can dredge my tank full again out of a pond
Nice job putting it the fire with what you have, is 100 gal your capacity or what you loaded? Not sure it would work but look into a truck mounted fire Tammer. Good for farms. Think it has a joystick in the cab.
The tank is like 260 gallon so I did pretty wella joystick would be kind of cool we have those on a lot of our squads but a little much for my feed track ha
I have watched a few of these now and you definitely were on the wrong side of the fire. Not only was there way more smoke for you to inhale but you also put yourself at risk of being burned up. Heroic job though. A few years ago I did a small controlled burn in my back yard. My neighbour watched me and thought it was a good idea. They ended up burning down 50 feet of spruce hedge that was over 30 years old between their house and the neighbours on the other side. The flames were higher than the roof tops. I hope your neighbor bought you cold beer for the summer.
He kept apologizing and I said hell it happens he was like what do I owe you what do I owe you I said I'm not worried about it but if you want to do something that's fine and I got a small check in the mail it paid for some fuel thanks for watching
Good morning. I think you guys did a very good job on this fire. But I have a couple of questions, 1. how come you guys did not have some one bring a tractor and build a firebreak and 2. did you guys ever call the fire department for help? Have a good day and be safe
And to answer your other questions it was out in the middle of one of our pastures and it happened fast enough a disc wouldn't have done us much good plus we would have ruined part of our pasture and there so many rocks we would have ruined the disc trust me I've done that before ha and decided to get away from them into the best area possible there was a marshy wet-draw that it could not get through and it was getting ready to burn into a bunch of weeds and Short Grass where we feed our cows so I knew it wasn't going to go but maybe 400 yards or so before it would burn itself out that's why I didn't call in our guys there was only a couple of small places where the grass was tall enough that it might have made it farther so we were trying hard to protect those if it would have made it through any of those I would have called past that there was another heavily wooded Creek that it would have been near impossible for it to get through
@@jrockyhill Ok thanks for educating me....I am a retired Captain out of the City of Texas city FD. We fought building fires plant fires traffic accidents and lotss and lots of ems call. W0ildland fires are strange tpo us structural and petro chemical guys
That's my personal fire rig 260 gallon but we only had about a hundred and eighty when I started you can go a long time if you're running the 3/4 inch line but if you're running the inch line with a 30 gallon a minute nozzle you can run out fairly quick
@@jrockyhill thanks , I plan on using the 150 gal suttles. I have a few I have made in the field now , but not set up for bale beds , so now the next few will be .
@@jrockyhill Its like listening to myself , your video kind of should me where I wanted to be . I'm only using the smaller suttles because of the weight on the trucks , witch can be an issue in the river breaks here in Montana.
A wildland fire has a head and a heel. The head is the front of the fire...Where it’s going. The heel is obviously the other end. Never fight it from the head be cause it can swamp you quickly and kill you. You did an awesome job. It scared me for a bit as it looked like you were at the head.
We were at the advancing line for some of it but we had bare dirt and very short grass where it was getting ready to burn into and I was certain we were not going to get over ran the part that made me nervous was all the big rocks and deep cuts we were trying to get through and ATVs that were bringing up the heel weren't getting there fast enough to catch up with what we were trying to put out so it was burning around where we had already put out a couple of times but the grass was short I knew it wasn't going to go far we were just doing the best we could
@WildlandDonkey just for curiosity's sake how many acres is there usually on a fire that you use a dozer and how long are you guys on scene before it's out
I've noticed that you routinely drive over live fire. I have seen serval trucks get disabled by doing that. Electrical wires have melted and grounded out, as well as airlines melting resulting in a brake getting locked up. I have never seen it, but I was told that a truck actully burned because a fire started underneath. Be careful.
I thought a controlled burn you have to register is with the fire department so they know if they see the smoke and they will tell you if it's ok to proceed.
Prescribed burns turn into wildland fires,when you light the fire and rely on the best possible case scenario, without preparing for the worst possible scenario. Always hope for the best case scenario, but be prepared for the absolute worst case scenario!
The neigbor was fully prepared for the fire and the wind to behave exactly as he wanted it to behave. Unfortunately, the fire and the weather disobeyed and did what they wanted to do!
The wait till it gets to you study sitting there shooting the water over the front of it you ain't even hitting the fire rather get off the truck and fight it the right way our turn the truck sideways and drive straight down it 8 ft away dry right straight down
Also put it out and drive in the black and get out of the grass cuz all you're doing is driving where is going to burn Goodway get yourself and a jam and be trapped
