Neighbors fight to protect delicate shoreline from luxury home development

One of the most valuable ecological areas in all of Whatcom County that is home to shellfish, salmon and heron could be home to more than 100 luxury residences.
Wendy Larson leads regular walking tours of the shoreline around Bellingham's Mud Bay.
"Seventy-five percent of Bellingham's shoreline has been developed," she said. "This is one of the few remaining spots Bellingham has."
Low tide reveals a fragile ecosystem involving a major estuary and habitat for all sorts of sea life and birds.

.36 There is no way a development like that would not have a serious impact on that fragile ecosystem .don't let that development happen we don't need more of that kind of thing we need to save every inch of shoreline and the fragile eco system

Was the property sold to the developer as a residential property? Or did the developer lobby local government to get the property re-zoned?

probably rezone; governments let businesses destroy anything but let a homeowner make a little mistake about a "wet land"and you get fined big time -- until your local government decides to demise it so a developer can build next to it.

Someone is getting rich here. Find out who and then you can protect the few natural areas left. There are plenty of non-sensitive places to put these things, perhaps with a less spectacular view.

I've been to homes that have built a small 4-inch deck to step on. Holding 2 chairs at best. They were told to take it down. How is it that a developer can do this?

And every single one of the houses in the development will go for 350k or more each. Because poor people don't deserve affordable housing.

we do need more housing, but this is just a project that will build out expensive and exclusive real estate for a sector of the housing market that does not need additional options... why let a project like that in and eat the risk/effect on the surrounding environment?

I HATE real estate developers. They want to destroy what makes that area special, and monetize the death of the planet. The herons were saved by a different city council, that is the difference. I hope you all stay on those crooked people!
