Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains Why The Sky Is Blue

Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue? Neil deGrasse Tyson is here to help you answer that question alongside comic co-host Chuck Nice. And, you’re about to find out why the answer is easy to understand, but not that simple.
You’ll learn how the white light from the sun interacts with the atmosphere through a process called “Rayleigh scattering” that makes the sky blue. Neil tells us why the sky turns different shades as the day goes on, and why the sunset changes from blue to amber.
Discover why the reason we have a blue sky is the same reason you can’t see stars during the daytime. And, how this lead to the discovery of the operational definition of where the atmosphere ends and space begins. Neil explains why he thinks space should be defined by gravity and not by the circumstances of our atmosphere. Lastly, Neil gives us a lesson on the frailty of our atmosphere and our delicate place among the stars.

Two things...first, I love how Neil can be so intelligent and in a blink can come down and enjoy humor that most of us share. Second, I had always thought that the sky was blue because sunlight was being reflected off our oceans into the atmosphere. Makes me start rethinking what else I have so drastically misunderstood.

me too - however, i only hated science at that point, because it could not answer the things i wanted in sufficient depth to fully grasp and understand the universe we live in - now however, i envy those going to school, as the amount of knowledge gathered since i was in school, is mind blogging. and in case i am 38, so was a long time ago. hence, science can now answer to the degree of understanding i want/need. Biggest issue i had in school, was the way it was taught, never taught to understand, just taught things to repeat, so i would sit there and say how is that, how does that happen, why does that happen, and as you can guess couldn't get an answer, so lost interest in it. And at risk of repeating, now they can fill in those blanks and explain things fully, like evolution, and my passion for learning is re-ignited.

Likely the air conditioning is turned down to about 62°F, and if you're skinny, you feel the cold more intensely. That's my hypothesis, anyway. Since NDT is wearing a long sleeved shirt of some type under a short sleeved shirt, so he has at least 2 layers on, himself. Maybe a 3rd, if he has an undershirt on, too.

As the great Neil deGrasse Tyson said, "Question everything, especially authority." If you look through a thin piece of glass, it is clear. However, a thick piece of glass, let's say a meter thick, has a sky-blue tint 💙. The reason for that is the presence of oxygen molecules in the glass. Liquid oxygen is bluish. The color of the sky is blue, just like glass, because of the oxygen in the atmosphere 💙. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.

I had a question...we know that during day sky is blue due to scattering of blue light of visible spectrum. During sunsets the sky looks reddish as most of blue light is scattered as the rays have to cover longer distance...so isn't there a contradiction that during day it looks blue and during evening it looks red both of which are due to scattering of blue light ?? I mean how could it be that we have to different outcomes due to the same phenomenon?

So if a candle is lit at the bottom of a football stadium in broad daylight and you can't see it, but it is visible at night, that is due to light from the sun scattering it rather than your rods being too saturated with light to differentiate it? If light from the sun scattering through the atmosphere obscures stars during the day, can't this also be explained in terms of your rods being too saturated with light? If no detector would be able to differentiate such a low light source in areas of high saturation, how can we be sure whether the explanation is relative intensity vs scattering?
