This quintessential New World picture from producer Roger Corman features a jaw-dropping array of behind-the-scenes talent including a score from James Horner, a script from John Sayles and art direction from James Cameron. Starring Richard Thomas, the supporting cast is equally impressive, including turns from Sam Jaffe, George Peppard, John Saxon and Robert Vaughn. Directed by Jimmy T. Murakami and an uncredited Corman. Sadly, Murakami, director of animated classics like When the Wind Blows and The Snowman, passed away on February 16 at age 80.

Also working on this: the Skotak brothers were the special effects supervisors, Alec Gillis worked on makeup, Chuck Cominsky worked alongside Cameron on effects, and Gale Ann Hurd was a production assistant.

one has to love these 80s trailers - no matter what the genre, the narrator with this incredibly grave, scary tone, pretty much giving an "executive summary" and "hashtag lines" of the movie.......

In some ways, I actually think this is more endearing than Star Wars.

Loved Battle Beyond the Stars. The Seven Samurai Meets Star Wars. Space Valkarie was my Favorite Character.

A totally, totally under rated film. This was James Cameron’s first film that he worked on as a model maker as he had just quit his job as a truck driver after seeing Star Wars and had decided he wanted to work in the film industry.

I actually saw this in the theatre. And my dad also took me to see 2001 when I was 10 years old, and it also scared the sh*t out of me and I didn't understand it.

This and The SWORD AND THE SORCERER prove you can make a highly entertaining film with a low budget.

I saw this in 1981 at The Regal Cinema, Mare Street, Hackney, London. The cinema closed down shortly afterwards and later became a supermarket 🎬🎥☹

I recall enjoying this movie, but my friends not so much. The set design is pretty darn good, especially on the main spaceship interiors! However when you first see the listening satellite, that gets blown up quickly by the baddies, you can actually see glue dripping down the sides of the model. (We were in the front row of the balcony section when we saw it) Must have been on a pretty small scale too. Still the use of Battlestar Galactica vipers turned upside down and made into ray guns was a pretty cool trick! A fun movie!

Another Corman produced 80s sci fi flick that reused some of the effects shots in this movie, was a lesser known film called "Space Raiders", aka "Star Child". While "Battle" is a great, underrated film, I feel "Raiders" is actually a better movie overall. I'd highly suggest anyone checking it out.

He outright re-used some of the sets as well! Incidentally, I caught Space Raiders on tv one night when I was about 7, back when the BBC would show this stuff in prime-time and not 3 in the morning. I hated it; I just found all the re-used footage too distracting; being a stubborn kid I refused to get involved with the characters due to the shamelessness of the producer. I guess that if I'd have known who Corman was back then, I'd have been more forgiving.

I saw Space Raiders in the theatre when it was new, shortly after seeing Battle Beyond The Stars on TV. There were a couple of kids (around 12 or so) in front of me who actually yelled out every time they saw a shot from the previous film.

Its a good idea, but sorta meandering in the middle and flat in tone. I really think that if Dante was still at New World at that time he would have been a much better choice for directing it and he could have fixed those problems up.

"Battle Beyond The Stars" What ever do they actually mean by that title? God, I've got to look up whatever happened to John Saxon.

It has no meaning, it just sounded good. Star Wars wasn't exactly a descriptive title either.

Saw this when I was 11 about three years after Star Wars. It's DEFINITELY no Star Wars. I didn't like it then and it doesn't seem that great now.

I was fourteen when I saw this in a theater, and I was very disappointed. I might ironically enjoy it as a bad movie now, but back then I was hoping for something decent, and this was not good.

Definitely, and so is Message From Space(Another Remake of the Seven Samurai set in Outer Space). But Battle Beyond the Stars still has some good moments.

I saw this in the theater when it first came out. Fairly stupid and banal. I was embarrassed for George Peppard on having to appear in this cabbage fart of a movie.
