I saw Neil Young in 1998 playing a solo acoustic set, while I was as a high school junior. The entire show was magical, but the way he played this song has always resonated with me to this day. Sometimes a single song and a single performance can change you as a person. This is that for me.

I think maybe the album “ Decade “ is my Neil Young go to Album . Im a trucker in Hawaii and I was one of the drivers that hauled Neil Young’s equipment from Kona air port to Hapuna prince hotel for some private party ( oops ) . Anyways we delivered in the day to the hotel but had to get their after midnight to help load and move equipment out right after the party ( 3 - 40 ‘ trailers ) after the party concert . I was hoping maybe Neil young would be hanging out in the trenches while loading but no chance a bunch of Hands at work . Was interesting . They didn’t look to happy . Maxed me a 70 hr . Work week OT . But I helped - shake and bake . Oh yeah I got 2 shirts that said “ The Real “ . Thanks , God Bless .

Neil Young Aurora borealis The icy sky at night Paddles cut the water In a long and hurried flight From the white man to the fields of green And the homeland we've never seen. They killed us in our tepee And they cut our women down They might have left some babies Cryin' on the ground But the firesticks and the wagons come And the night falls on the setting sun. They massacred the buffalo Kitty corner from the bank The taxis run across my feet And my eyes have turned to blanks In my little box at the top of the stairs With my Indian rug and a pipe to share. I wish I was a trapper I would give thousand pelts To sleep with Pocahontas And find out how she felt In the mornin' on the fields of green In the homeland we've never seen. And maybe Marlon Brando Will be there by the fire We'll sit and talk of Hollywood And the good things there for hire And the Astrodome and the first tepee Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me Pocahontas.

Sure, but it wasn't just some "unfortunate instances". The massacre of the American Indians was one of the worst genocides in world history. It's estimated that 100 million natives were slaughtered. That can and should NEVER be forgotten.

I dont get lust from it at all. The one line about sleeping with pocahontas is more or less probably about actually sleeping, and this song is a heartbreaking tribute to the horrors the native people of this country endured all those years ago. Young was inspired to write it after watching Marlon Brando refuse to accept his Oscar win in 1972, and unstead sent a native woman to advocate for native issues.

From Wikipedia: Young has been a vocal opponent of the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would run from Alberta to Texas. When discussing the environmental impact on the oilsands of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Young asserted that the area now resembles the Japanese city of Hiroshima in the aftermath of the atomic bomb attack of World War II. Young has referred to issues surrounding the proposed use of oil pipelines as "scabs on our lives". In an effort to become more involved, Young has worked directly with the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation to draw attention to this issue, performing benefit concerts and speaking publicly on the subject. In 2014, he played four shows in Canada dedicated to the Honor the Treaties movement, raising money for the Athabasca Chipewyan legal defence fund. In 2015, he and Willie Nelson held a festival in Neligh, Nebraska, called Harvest the Hope, raising awareness of the impact of tar sands and oil pipelines on Native Americans and family farmers. Both received honours from leaders of the Rosebud, Oglala Lakota, Ponca and Omaha nations, and were invested with sacred buffalo robes.

Well, it would be sort of difficult if he had to break down every tribe within the span of a 4 minute song. Pretty unrealistic, plus I think he captures the sentiment very well regarding the horrors many native people endured for decades in this country.
