Breakers is not missing, that is a pirate release. It is not licensed nor is a port, is a homebrew NeoGeo CD emulator configured to boot only one game. Those French guys should be ashamed, they think that just because Visco doesn't release games, their games are "abandonware" and they can do whatever they want with their IP. Not only they needed to get the license from whomever hold Visco's IPs, they also needed SNK's license to use the NGCD BIOS.
The Dreamcast certainly had arcade perfect titles. Not just SNK, but games like Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi were arcade perfection. Just another reason why Dreamcast was one of the best consoles, if not the best, at the time
@@meltonthegamerlmao comparing sonic adventure to Mario 64 is like comparing a fiat to a Ferrari. On topic, not all ports are perfect. Garou and sf3 3rd strike come to mind. Want proof? Ps2 was used for tournaments, not the Dreamcast.
Loved the Dreamcast, when my friend brought one over and we played Resident Evil Code Veronica it blew my mind. I bought my own shortly after that and played the hell out of it with titles as Shenmue, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi and a lot more. Good times :)
These KoF 99-01 ports for DC would get reused later on for KoF Nests Hen, or Nests Saga on PS2. That compilation contains the arcade originals, as well as the Dreamcast ports, that's fine with me as the originals on that compilation don't have button configurations, but the DC ports on there do. Twinkle Star Sprites is one of those games that no matter what system it is on, it will destroy your wallet. Garou and both Last Blade games also have PS2 ports, that's the only way I own those, outside of the first Last Blade on PS1 (I also have KoF 02 on PS2, which isn't the DC version, but has characters added not present in the arcade, nor DC versions). If one gets Last Blade 2 on DC, I recommend highly the Japanese version, the US verison removes blood and fatalities. Same with Garou, the US version uses Terry Bogard voice clips from Real Bout, instead of MotW, and there supposedly is some desync in the game's sound. Just go with the Japanese versions of both if possible.
Agreed. I always thought when the dust settled it would be street fighter 3 3rdstrike, but capcom vs snk is a rare gem that doesn't get the love it deserves.
This list was one of the major reasons I loved the dreamcast. I am a huge 2d fighter fan, and the dreamcast blew all the other consoles out of the water imo. Everything on this list, plus SFIII 3rd strike, Capcom vs SNK, MVC 2... it was a good time in gaming.
Awesome video as always! Glad you covered "Mark of the Wolves" in detail. The Dreamcast handles it with ease but it is absolutely amazing that hardware released in 1990 could produce such results! Keep 'em coming Sega Lord X!
Also felt that the 2d art was some of the best in last blade. Can't forget the cast of characters the game has. I would say fighters but they were far more characters then anything else. You had the snow stage were the snow would get crushed an moved out of your path when you fought and you could knock some of the snow off the tree.
I love that the Saturn and Dreamcast have such a large selection of quality 2D fighting games! I will blame you if the auction for "Mark if the wolves" im watching on Ebay sky-rockets in price now😉😅
Just buy one they aren't that expensive maybe 50 bucks or so. If your the type that doesn't mind ROMs, games will play from cdrs. Let the nostalgia wash over you, lol
I just want to say thanks a lot for the Etsy recommendation. I got my Shining Force III translation reproduction and it's beautiful, and plays perfectly. Even though it's not an original game, I think this will be one of my favourite items in my collection for a long time. I'm loving the videos too! Keep up the good work :)
Also the ps1 and Saturn/ dream cast has a weird relationship with games sequals of franchises Ps1 power instinct 2 / Saturn groove on fight Ps1 the last blade / dreamcast the last blade 2 Ps1 rival schools/ dream cast project justice
As much as I love the Dreamcast the NeoGeo Ports are far from Perfect. But at the time they were the only accessible way to enjoy them on console. I eventually traded my Dreamcast NeoGeo ports for physical Playstation 2 ports. Dreamcast is still king though with Naomi home ports. Also Capcom fighters were done pretty well on Dreamcast... we looking at you Street Fighter III!
Garou will always remind me of college. While I was playing Diablo II or Sims in class (yeah, not the best student), another guy would have Mark of the Wolves up on MAME. I'd never seen a game with such phenomenal animation as that.
Love the Dreamcast... and Saturn. Thanks for doing the compilation. I think the only SNK/Neogeo game I have for the Dreamcast is Last Blade 2. I put a bit too much focus on Capcom. I have always had half an eye out for Mark of the Wolves but money and space leaves me not buying many retro games these days. I will come back to this video again when I'm pumping up the Dreamcast collection. It's a shame that Europe didn't get any of these games, although that said the Saturn didn't fair much better.
Hey SLX! I love your content! May I suggest one thing, however. Could you mention if these games are easily available on more modern consoles and maybe some commentary on those versions? For example, enhanced versions of a majority of these games are available on the PS4 and Xbox 360. It's just a suggestion that I think would truly add to your already awesome content. Thanks man!
So Sega Lord X thinks didn't think of Australia where the console was also sold and featured an unofficial homebrew game made after the official lifespan of these consoles....OK? Also Garou: Mark of the Wolves never had "Fatal Fury" in it's title at all, but it is a spiritual successor to that game series.
I thought you were going to speak about the amazing Neo4ALL emulator on DC that has absolutely 95% PERFECT emulation on Neo Geo CD games running at full speed. Well most games, there might be a few that don't run well, but the vast majority certainly do. It is even more impressive considering the SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis emulators on the DC still can't really run full speed. What about making a follow up video about that emulator? It really is like getting a Neo Geo CD for free when you have the Dreamcast.
Awesome! I seriously think it would be a great followup topic to this as a companion piece. The AES and MVS games struggle, but many of those games were ported to the CD, and those work great on the DC. I guess when you get into using the larger carts they have trouble emulating them. But other than that, you can get great video with the DC emulating the CD games running on VGA. It really works so well you would almost swear it was an official emulator made by Neo Geo themselves.
That 200 Mhz SH4 CPU is going to be a big limiter for accurate/fast emulation (referring to the SNES/Genesis comment). I remember that it wasn't until faster CPUs like the 1 Ghz+ Pentium III rolled around that Neo-Geo/MAME/SNES etc. emulation really became popular.
There's no local multiplayer game that I've ever had a better time with than KoF Dream Match on Dreamcast. My friends & I played it almost daily for hours. I even had the link cable with the Neo Geo Pocket Color to unlock the hidden gallery. KoF still gets brought out with the gamers in my family at Christmas. It killed me that the West didn't get the later DC releases. After years of choppy & slow SNES & PS1 Neo Geo ports, getting enhanced ports at home was amazing.
I have a lot of these games on the Neo Geo and I can tell you that they did a really good job at the ports to the Dreamcast. Last blade 2 is one of my favorites.
I'm glad to see a mention of NG:Dev at the end. Gunlord was a really good one, I thought. I saw that you mentioned it in the description. Also, to reiterate what someone else mentioned, a shame they didn't do any Metal Slugs on DC. Perhaps SNK's financial situation contributed to that. DC was a great platform for Neo Geo games, especially with it being, as you said, the first mass-market console to handle Neo Geo with no issues at all. I had one disappointment. Unlike Saturn, DC's stock controller wasn't enjoyable to use, for me at least. With the Saturn, I didn't have to get a third-party or aftermarket solution. On DC, the main controller felt like a step backwards. I eventually got an adapter to use Saturn pads. I've played more of the first Last Blade, but those are great games. I love the presentation and sprite work. And I also appreciate the old, low-res sprites. I think they still look great. SNK's sprites had the most unique style, I'd say. That's why I think I was drawn to and impressed by KOF '97 more than Capcom's CPS2 fighters. Not that Capcom didn't have their own quality sprite art. I'm not against higher-res sprites either, as Guilty Gear was, and still is, very nice looking as well. That's high-res enough for me. Great video as usual. Thank you.
Wow, I thought we here in the US had it bad. Europe got totally screwed! As a big fan of the KOF series, I’m glad that I imported these long ago. The only one I didn’t have was 2002, and I finally got it at a decent price last year. I was able to get a reprint of pink bullets a couple years ago by way of an independent publisher called JoshProd, Who has been feverishly working out deals with some of these homebrew developers to re-release some of their games. JoshProd also managed to get reprints done of Ghost Blade and Fast Striker. That’s how I got them at retail price. Like Sony, it’s a shame that Sega of America looked down upon a lot of 2-D releases during the Saturn and Dreamcast Eras. We missed out on a lot of great titles because of that.
Im so glad for the Saturn to Dreamcast controller converter to play all these. I love the DC but that controller used to kill my hand after playing fighting games for 20min.
as a sega fan and as snk lover too this video is absolutely fantastic, congrats, you should anyway really do a video about the NEO4ALL as it's a very good piece of software... by the way, you should do a video of the DreamPi, it's a fantastic piece of software/hardware but seems that none is talking about...
We got screwed over hard when it come to games here. Not only were games slower but we'd often miss out on games that either only stayed in Japan or Went to the US and Japan. Lucky these days it's not so much an issue. Thankfully we have access to the KOF games and Neo Geo games now.
Dreamcast really got a wealth of 2d fighting games. Garou, 3S, and MVC2 alone make it one of the best systems for this, and that's before taking into account LB2, CVS2, and the KOFs. That's partly why the system is so revered, and I understand the sentiment fully. RIP DC.
Great video 👍. I must admit, I became a Neo Geo fan because of the games that were released on the Dreamcast. I'm surprised they didn't port any of the Metal Slugs.
Was gonna say Capcom vs SNK millennium fight but guess Capcom produced that one and not on Neo Geo. I loved the version on the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Awesome video as always!
I remember those SNK ports, for the Dreamcast and i still have both of those consoles. Here is a unpopular opinion, but the Dreamcast was a Neo Geo 2.0, just like the OG XBOX was a Dreamcast 2.0 with all these ports. Outstanding video by the way.
I have all of these save Twinkle Star Sprites, because I have too many versions of that game. The Dreamcast was the last step before finally buying an AES for me, and I also remember that era very fondly. I have to say, though, that I'm in the minority if folks who aren't so bully on Mark of the Wolves. Not to undermine its technical prowess at all; I just didn't care for most of the new cast as much, being a long time SNK fan. Rock Howard was a super cool idea, and Terry's evolution was strong, but I didn't fall in love with the likes of B. Jenet and Kushinood Butt. We all have our tastes, though. Great stuff as always!
Much love respect to you bruh like seriously, ill be 35 later this year and i grew up on everything sega and other genres so seeing this warms my heart with joy and takes me back and i appreciate you for this i got a call from my cousin she said she found my sega Saturn with my sega cd attached with it lol funny as i watch this and i get that call and im going to pick it up tomorrow and show my kids how i got my game on growing up keep up the good work and ill definitely continue to show love and support #gamersforlife
The Neogeo ports are so good on the Dreamcast. The only thing that keeps them from being my choice when playing Neogeo games is the lack of 240p support for the vast majority of them.
Sega needs to make a Dreamcast 2 and make the Dreamcast 2 region-free, have free online play without having to use prepaid cards needed to play online for a month or a year and be backwards-compatible with Dreamcast 2, Dreamcast 1, Saturn, 32X, Sega CD, Genesis, Master System and SG-1000 games.
I forgot both KOFDM99 and KOF99EVO had a lot of voice re-recordings. So much care for those ports, even though I think DM99 had some animation cuts compared to the original (though it wouldn't be as bad as the atrocious PS1 port) EDIT: also the Agetec versions of LB2 and MOTW had this curious thing, as the music was programmed differently and the console laser did A LOT of disc reading while those game were playing. Such thing doesn't happen in the japanese version.
Sega Lord X 20000 is big time. How bout an autographed Japanese Saturn? Lol. Jk. Keep up the great work. Coming across your videos, hooking my Saturn up, and buying some games seem to deliberate to be a coincidence. Meant to be, buddy.
The Dreamcast was really able to do these titles justice. Unfortunately I think most gamers expected by this point fantastic 3D graphics from this console. These games didn't stand a chance.
I have all the original retail KOF games on the Dreamcast. So glad I imported a Japanese DC as living in the UK with a European dreamcast would have been horrible. Didn't realise all these games never got European releases.
Hi Sega Lord X. I just want to reach out to see if it's possible to include a list of games y videos like this. It's very convenient to have the list when you get a viewer like me excited about buying the different games you are showcasing instead of having to dig it out of the Video. I know for older videos will be though to include this list, but going forward it would definitely be nice; just a suggestion. Thanks!
I own KOF 99 on the DC, and I think its a bit underrated by most fans of the series. I have a hell of a lot of fun with it whenever I get the Dreamcast out. Finally caved and got KOF 98 and Garou for the Switch of the Nintendo eShop so I could play them for the first time... Yeah, wish I had them for the DC because they're every bit as good as people say but unfortunately DC copies are a bit too pricey for me
I love the Dreamcast, I've got 2 of them, got almost every single fighter for it as well. That being said, some ports aren't that great... Garou, sf3 3rd strike come to mind.
Another great episode! Many of SNK's games are now being released on Xbox One (and PS4/Switch?) and a big part of me wants to buy all of them. But... should I? I already own the following Xbox 360 releases: - The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match - The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match - Garou: Mark of the Wolves - Neo Geo Battle Colesium Great games in my opinion that might make purchasing titles such as the older KOF-games irrelevant. Then again... all of the available games under the 'ACA'-label DO show SNK's history, which is definitely something worth considering also. Anyway opinions here? Thanks in advance! :)
Dude it was released in 98 in Japan it was released in 1999 a year after Japan. Trust me, not having simultaneous releases sucked for a kid in high school with no import money 😜!
KoF Dream Match is a huge heartbrake for me. The NA version GD-ROMs have something wrong with them which caused the discs to stop reading. In my travels I've tried several copies of the game and none of them work anymore. This could potentially be disc rot, but without more info I couldn't tell for sure. What's sad is that Dream Match had cross play with the Neo Geo Pocket Color version of KoF R2. You could transfer over your custom mode fighters which was a really cool feature. I really want to have a working copy again but it needs to be the NA version to work with my NGPC version.
I always felt the dreamcast could've been the spiritual successor to the Neo geo Cd. It kind of shows that maybe SNK should've done some arcade games on the Naomi I guess.
I wonder if they had to pay licensing fees to put a Nissan, a Toyota, a what looks like to be a 90's Mustang and a VW Beetle on the background on the first KOF 99.
Does this work at full speed (or close)? I want to buy it to give more run time to my DC but I alreay played an xbox neo geo emulator and it's so goddam slow it can be barely used, and box is a whole lot more powerful than DC... Please enlighten me.
These are original releases while the system was active, so yes, they run full speed. The emulator for the DC that runs Neo Geo games is decent, with a number of games playing great, but some do have issues.
nice video. i tjink kof2k1 has the option to switch both 2d or 3d background. nice addition since backgrounds of kof2k1 in neogeo were really bad compared to the rest of the serie
Great Work. " Mark of the wolves " is very good made and everyone should Take a look in (PS4/Vita/Andoid ...). If you can make a/more comparison with same Name, but different Game like: "Alex Kidd in Miracle World" & " Wonderboy in Monsterland", where (for me) are the Sega Master Sytem Versions are better (to play) as the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive Version. And if it looks other, the different of the game "Exhumed" between the Sega Saturn and PlayStation Version. Have Fun and see you ;)
I was never relay into fighting games so wean I found the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection for $20 new on the PS4 I got since I though it wound be the only cost eferted way to get my paws on Guerrilla War, Ikari Warriors, and P.O.W.
My capture setup currently supports S-Video, RGB Scart, Component, and HDMI. I purchased a cheap VGA upscaler, but it looks just awful. I can't justify the cost of a VGA upscaler just for one system.
