After a lengthy absence, once again here is a Neo Geo review and this time we will take a look at Robo Army. Released in 1991, this beat 'em up has you smashing and bashing robotic foes to a heap of scrap and bolts. While it doesn't have the mass appeal of Final Fight and other contemporary beat 'em ups, this one is a fun game worth checking out. Enjoy!

I love the look, sound, and theme of this game. Robo Army is awesome! Now that it’s available on Xbox One, I can finally enjoy this game! Also, great review. I couldn’t find any good quality reviews of Robo Army, but thanks to you, I found the perfect one. At last, I can show my friends a nice review on this game.

Footage for Robo Army was recorded using a Robo Army MVS cartridge on the Omega Consolized MVS and The King of Fighters 2000 using The King of Fighters 2000/2001 compilation pack for the PlayStation 2.

Great work as always. This is actually game I've never had the chance play, but it looks like a lot of fun. Interesting point about Maxima as well. I feel like you've really been knocking them out of the park with these last few videos. Can't wait to see what's coming next.

I like Mutation Nation most as you know but Robo Army I like right after that. Its a cool and pretty fun beat-em-up for the Neo Geo. Another great review man.

Thanks! Robo Army is one of my favorite Neo Geo beat 'em ups, along with Mutation Nation, and Sengoku 3. I wanted to change things up with the intro. I'm glad you like it.

God, I wish SNK would've made a couple sequels for Robo Army. This could've been their Final Fight or Streets of Rage.

A follow up would have really elevated Robo Army. I agree. Not sure about the reliability of SNK Wikia, but a sequel was in the works, but it was cancelled.

Lol the best part of playing was wrecking that robot cop boss - but the jump and attack was so bad it left a lot to be desired - I wanted there to be more enemy variety but overall the game was worth it to play - an updated version with 4 players ala Xmen and enhanced graphics would be great - had a blast filming this one

Yeah man wrecking the robot cop was fun. The jumping mechanic is a pain. Most beat 'em ups from that era are guilty of using repetitive enemies. I read on SNK Wikia (not sure how accurate that is), that a sequel was in the works, but it was cancelled. It's a shame that with the exception of Sengoku, none of the other beat 'em ups for the system got sequels.

The intro is dope! Your review is solid, covering many aspects of the game. So there are no health pick-ups in Roboo Army? What about Scoring? No health packs seems strange..., I wonder why they did that.

Thanks a lot! I did briefly mention health pick-ups in the review. I didn't mention it in the review, but your health is fully restored at the completion of each stage. Scoring and health restoration are common beat 'em features, so I didn't want to mention them in great detail.

Yes I did. Yeah, playing it on the multicart is a nice option. Sadly MVS, AES, and CD prices are high.

I need to revisit this sometime. Admittedly I usually forget about it when looking for neo beat em ups, but for some reason some of the stigma from Eight Man rubs off on it. I like Eight Man, but the last time I played through it the repetitive nature just rubbed me wrong and I haven't played it since :/

I've playted through EightMan and it is not worth the prices that it goes for these days. Luckily it's on the 161 in 1 cart. I think you should re-visit Robo Army.

+NeoTurboManiac I was able to play both on my 161. Still not sure why Sengoku 2 isn't on there. I like Robo Army, but I think it's since I had to turn to emulation for Ninja Combat I usually sit down with that one for awhile when playing similar games on the Neo. I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger on Super Spy and Magician Lord though. I almost got Ninja Combat instead when adding in games to the collection that aren't on the 161, and for whatever reason Ninja Combat just keeps going up in price and is now at around 150 :/

Botza Brand I was disappointed that Sengoku 2 was not on the 161 in 1 cart. Ninja Combat's prices are crazy. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago you could get a copy for $50-$60.

2-player co-op always makes the game twice as fun imho. That's why I always loved the system because most games were 2 player. I don't know why I never picked up this game,but now I have a reason to give it another shot man.

Yeah bro, I felt the same way when I played this with my cousin. Seeing big chunks of scrap and bolts blowing up along with the sounds of hammering metal, makes this game appealing to me. Hopefully you can get this game.

I use an Elgato Game Capture for most consoles. I connect an 8 port AV switch box and connect that to a composite to HDMI converter, which I connect to the Elgato. For the Omega CMVS and the Saturn, I use a Dazzle capture device, which does a good job recording n s-video. For voice recording, I use a Blue Snowball mic. I use VoiceMeeter and Audacity to record audio.

I see :) nicee ,is it the el gato hd? My consolized mvs has composite, could i use the adaptor from hdmi to composite to capture cmvs gameplay? Or do i need a different game capture device

Sorry for the late reply. I have the Elgato Game Capture HD. For my setup, I have my PC connected to my TV via HDMI. Connect the composite cables from the CMVS to the composite to HDMI adapter. For the adapter, I connect a USB cable to my PC and the HDMI cable to the Elgato. For the Elgato, I connect a USB cable to the PC and the HDMI cable to my TV. This will allows me to have a game running on two HDMI inputs on the same TV. One from the Elgato and the other from the PC. For the capture software, you can't play directly on it, because of severe lag input, so when I record, I change to the other HDMI input on my TV, which will be lag free. I hope this helps.

This was my first scrolling beat em up I got on aes way back in 95. I bought a neo geo , 2 controllers and a memory card with samurai Shodown 2 for £180 back then as the person was selling it to fund purchase for a ps1. I were buying the carts and had a lot but I then sold them all barring a few to get a neo geo cd as the games were a lot cheaper, biggest regret I have now looking at aes prices. The neo cd is ok but I still prefer the aes. I have a aes which I got about 15 years ago and got the multicart 161 in 1 as now games like this are just to expensive to collect. Still it’s not the first console I’ve sold then several years later regretted and then purchased another one only to find the cost of games is getting ever higher. Thank god there are everdrive carts now for most of them.

Awesome! That was one hell of a bargain for the AES back then. I've gone through those times myself, where I sold a console and then regretted it. I would eventually get them back, but not every game I had, due to the rising prices. The evercarts are great for those super pricey games like Twinkle Star Sprites, Samurai Shodown V Special, and Pulstar.

Thanks man! Robo Army is a fun beat 'em up. I'm surprised that even the CD version is very expensive. Between the three formats, the MVS carts are the least expensive and I waited a long time to get one at a reasonable price.

For me, its always a mood depending situation for me regarding Robo Army and Mutation Nation. Even though I do enjoy both. I don't mention those, because I once owned a 161-in-1 MVS cart and the damn thing ruined my consolized MVS. I ended up waiting a year to get it replaced. I know there are other multicarts out there, but I prefer sticking to my original cartridges.
