Actual mortarman here, you are correct. It essentially how it works. The round has a small amout of propellant in the round and then you place up to 4 "cheese charges" with more propellant to increase the range. Round is hung, then released. Round then goes down the tube and falls onto the firing pin.

I know they made it more realistic, but it is more practical if they just made the spring inside the tube itself. and its even cooler if they made it with compatible with other Nerf missiles, this way it will be more accessible for people to get ammo, and it will also make this toy more popular. we all know that compatibility of the ammo or magazine of a blaster is most of the time a deal breaker. Look at what happened to the vortex series. Im not sure if the Ultra series may suffer the same fate as the Vortex, especially that its ammo is more expensive, no off-brand available (yet) and easily snaps.

I just realised that the mortar is adjustable so you can load it on an angle on your shoulder straighten it back out and use it as a bazooka

I'm surprised you knew that one of the connectors for the flashbang was called a balance connector. It is possible to charge the battery via the balance connector, OR you can use the other connector which considering that it's a cheap toy I'd say is probably a Tamiya connector most likely the mini version. So most likely any RC battery charger SHOULD work. Although looking at the connector, because it's a dark red colour that could mean it's a T connector also known as a Deans.
