Okay, I’ve got one for you: “Ice Hockey”. It’s a great little hockey game, it’s a shame that it hasn’t gotten more attention than it has. I don’t see an SNES sequel for it so much as something modern, in the same vein as that “Excitebike” sequel on the Wii: keep the gameplay and the perspective more or less the same, but give it modern graphics and online play.
"I think Zelda 2 is better than people remember." So, so true. I remember, back when this game was released, the general consensus among the kids at my school was that it was a lot harder than the first game, but still really good. It seems to be hated more than liked now in the internet age, but that wasn't always the case!
Though always very playable, a part of me hated it because it wasn’t traditional(not sure if we could call that at the time but definitely can now) Zelda. Good game but definitely a bump on the road in the franchise.
Yeah, that actually sounds like a cool idea. Wearing different monsters as costumes, going through dream-like locales... it kinda frightens me how I'm also describing Balan's Wonderworld.
I too loved Zelda 2, it's a nice mix of Castlevania and Zelda. They sort of had it's gameplay in Link's Awekening on the GB, it always felt like a nice little hommage.
Good list. I'd like to add: Bionic Commando Adventures of Lolo Shadowgate Deja Vu Uninvited Solomon's Key StarTropics Castlevania 2 style Faxanadu Blades of Steel Jackal Ice Climber Excitebike Snake Rattle 'n Roll
By the way I did want to let you know that, although Adventures Of Lolo did not get a sequel after,it is part of the Lolo/Eggerland series, which means there are more games from that series it’s just that they come before not after. Also StarTropics did get a sequel it’s called zoda’s revenge
Metalstorm is my favorite game in my NES collection. Such a classic and also a really advanced technical showcase, with the parallax scrolling and other visual features. A SNES sequel would have been great, but there are already a ton of great mech platformers on the system.
Blaster Master 2 sucked on the Genesis. I remember reading they outsourced it to a european dev or something. Also to note, there's actually a Kunio-kun/River City Ransom game on the SNES. It's called Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun.
Frankly it wasn't outsourced. Sadly the UK company that did it, made it without permission or lead from Sunsoft. And so Blaster Master 2 was considered not to be an actual sequel. We did eventually get a game that was more of a sequel in a way on the original Playstation with Blaster Master: Blasting Again, though it can't really live up to how good the original Blaster Master was.
This was back before the internet was really a thing, back in the NES days. The company that made Blaster Master 2 was a British company that made the game before Sunsoft even knew about it being made. Back in those days there was all kinds of unofficial and bootleg games being made.
Cool video and lots of solid choices there. Agreed on Zelda II. It really is revisionist history when everyone goes around saying Zelda II was considered a disappointment or that fans rejected it. Practically everyone I knew back then played the game and I don't remember one person complaining. Oddly, as much as I love Zelda II, I never considered Nintendo making a direct sequel. That's a great idea. And I'd love to see a proper Kid Icarus sequel. You have a great channel man.
You re 100% right. Ive said almost the exact same thing in regards to the revisionists on Zelda 2. I remember back then when it came out and I never heard anyone say it was a bad game - now maybe a hard game but plenty of NES game were ball busters. Id love to see a new Zelda game in that style. And I agree on the Kid Icarus thing too (underrated Nintendo developed game for sure)
Certainly not revisionist history. This game was WTFd like crazy back in the day. If anything I'd say time has been kind to it, as the love only really surfaced during the internet era.
Kid Icarus was a sibling to Metroid, wasn’t it? Imagine what could have been if a sequel had been developed in the same vein of Super Metroid, it could have been incredible.
A Fun Ham-Burger I’m still holding out for a modern Kid Icarus Metroidvania. Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, and Bloodstained proves there is a market.
One NES game I think should've gotten a SNES sequel was Mach Rider. I know the game is repetitive and all, but I think it's premise and setting had some untapped potential, and that type of game would lend itself well to the SNES' mode 7 capabilities. Plus, a game set in a Mad Max esc post apocalyptic world where you ride a motor cycle and shot people to make them go boom could have help with Nintendo's "kiddie" image problem that they struggled with (and still do to this day even). Also, I want a StarTropics 3 damn it!
Milon's Secret Castle. This game was awesome back in the game, even though it had most players confused out of their minds, but once you got to know it, it had some cool concepts. Wonder what the SNES could have done with that...
I was Bummed out when Taxan didn't join in making SNES titles, especially sequels or upgrades to their existing games. Two of my favorites made by them is Low G Man and Burai Fighter; they could have been really nice 16bit games.
I'm pretty amazed and disappointed that more River City Ransom romhacks don't exist. Like you said, there's so much potential there. I don't think any of the follow-up games captured the same charm and fun of the original.
I remember playing the Super Famicom sequel and just punching everyone until eventually every time someone saw me, it was a fight. It didn't have the charm in the changed art style and having a translation patch probably would have helped because I did figure there was a story when I ran into some kids beating up someone that seemed like a friend to Kunio. The NES one where they're doing historical set pieces in Japan was fun and I think I came across a pre patched English version of the ROM so I wasn't completely lost. The announcer between scenes made me laugh.
I think Conquest of the Crystal Palace would have made a great SNES sequel. It has one of the coolest sound tracks on the NES, fun gameplay and that sidekick dog is really fun to use.
Awesome video - I must of missed it when it came out. Id love to see a new Zelda 2 and a Kid Icarus. I have the 3ds Kid Icarus just havent played it. A lot of people said its really good but you just have to get used to its unique control style.
it's great to see more appreciation for Zelda 2, I played that game all the time as a kid, and to this day it remains in my top 5 for the NES. The series has done sidescrolling since but only as an aside and definitely not with the same feel or difficulty.
Great job with this video man! Really fun to watch! I couldn't agree more with Blaster Master SHOULD have had a SNES Sequel. As well as games like Bionic Commando and Clash At Demonhead! I also think that a direct sequel these days of Zelda 2 would be awesome! Sort of like what they did with A Link to the Past.
+SNES drunk No problem at all man! Keep up the great work! If you have time, can you please check out my channel and shoot a sub if you like? I would appreciate it.
I'm in total agreement regarding Zelda II. My friends and I were really disappointed by it when it was released, but I revisited it a decade ago and couldn't believe how awesome it was. Stepping up to it expecting nothing special, I was baffled by how engaged I became and how much less confusing it seemed. It's a ROM I still get back into now and again.I would have loved to have seen an SNES Zelda II sequel released after A Link to the Past, reflecting the release of the original two games. Perhaps it could have even led to the creation of two distinct branches and styles of Zelda. While a few mechanics from Zelda II made it into future Zelda games, imagine what Zelda II could have evolved into over the past three decades if it had continued on its own unique trajectory.
File under “Who Knew” : Over 4 years ago when you spoke about a 16 bit nes Master Blaster someone really paid attention because now w have Master Blaster Zero 1&2 on the Switch. They took your words to heart and created to amazing 16 but style games. You’re the man now dog! ;)
I still remember being at my cousins’ house in the closet under the stairs looking through a box of old NES games and manuals and finding the one for Zelda 2. I was totally blown away at the anime-style illustrations and the story summary in there. I’d only ever looked at manuals from later systems so I hadn’t realized before how helpful they could be for older games, but I also had never realized how much they could spark your imagination. It actually made me want to play Zelda 2, despite the weirdness and junk. I’ve still never beaten it myself, but remembering the Zelda 2 manual and how beautiful it was, I’ve always wished for a Zelda 2 remake/sequel/reimagining/spiritual successor. (Hopefully one that I could actually play through to completion :P)
I would be down for a Zelda 2 remake. it was a nice different take on the gameplay. If they made the sword slightly longer it would have been better, and it definitely was challenging, but I feel the game was great overall.
I grew up with the NES and SNES and a huge library of games for both. Since then I've avoided those two console's gaming library and have focused on the games for the consoles I never owned. Your channel has convinced me to rekindle my love for the SNES and explore it's library once again
It’s odd finding these videos 7 years later. I wanna comment and talk to people about these ideas. But everyone’s already been here and done that lol. Either way good game choices.
river city ransom is on snes, or at least Japan - have it on emulation and its translated. it's more like a sequal than port but the sprites are recognizable.
Upon really thinking about what would've been a great game to do the 8-bit to 16-Bit transition one immediately came to mind Wizards and Warriors..that would've been an epic game, and another that also would've rocked,.. Jackal...if Konami would've redone that as a sequel with the kind of sound and visuals seen in Contra 3 with tons of rotation and scaling..man that was a lost opportunity
Super Nintendo should have had way more Metroidvania type games. NES had Metroid, Zelda 2, Castlevania 2, Rambo, Goonies 2, Rygar, and Battle of Olympus to name a few. A lot of these games had flaws but could have been made much better on SNES. This was somewhat remedied on GBA, but I still think there were a lot if missed opportunities here.
Metal Storm was awesome! As a kid, I killed myself picking strawberries in the hot Summer sun for weeks at 10 cents a pint with the goal of buying it since my parents wouldn’t spend the money and thought it was as good a time as any to teach me the value of hard work. As soon as I got enough cash, I quit. It was practically slave labour, but worth it as I played the shit out of that game for years to come.I loved it! As a bonus, I learned from an early age the “value” of hard work and how much it blows.
I was hoping to see Base Wars on the list! Still waiting for a sequel on any console. But the main limit of the game on NES was how short the season was. Then you had to start over. Would be fun to have a longer game and develop your team deeper.
Man, Crystalis is really impressive for an nes game already. If it weren't for the colors and some other small things you'd think it was on a 16-bit system.
Life Force Salamander was the sequel to Gradius. The Sequel to Lifeforce - Gradius 3 - did indeed come out on the Snes. And I also believe there was a "Super River city Ransom"
So, interesting thing about listing Zelda 2 in this video: Ocarina of Time was originally planned as a "refinement" of Zelda 2's playstyle, hence the increased emphasis on swordplay in the 3d Zeldas. That original plan ended up being rehauled into what we got in Ocarina instead.
Excitebike is one classic big one not mentioned here. It didn't get a 16 bit iteration unless you count the Japanese-only Satellaview-exclusive version (although it's just the same as the NES game but with new graphics).
Re-watching this video again after playing Blaster Master 0.3's true ending gives me a sense of a prophecy fulfilled. Back then you didn't know you what was coming, but you sure knew what you were saying! To see Jason's 3-part story in all its beauty after the marvelous dudes at Inti Creates gave the series the love and polish it deserved was sooo gratifying, and gives me hope that some other games may end up getting the treatment. And I sure hope Inti Creates' next Sunsoft jewel remake is Journey to Sirius. That game DESERVES to be remade. Another one would be King of Monsters, but I'll understand if that one is a liiittle bit harder to remake (pretty unknown game from pretty unknown company, but cool nonetheless).
Metal Storm got an SNES successor in the form of Metal Warriors. The single player is more action based, but it's fun in it's own right, and it has an underrated 1 on 1 mode. I consider it a hidden gem on the SNES
I am a huge fan of Blaster Master! If you have not checked them out yet, Blaster Master Zero & Zero 2 for the Nintendo switch are phenomenal! Both bring something new to the table, but maintain the same great core gameplay.
Looks like your wish for a Blaster Master sequel in the same vein as the original might come to forwishen a handful of generations late with Blaster Master Zero
Apparently there was Blaster Master Overdrive on the Wii, as well as sequels on other systems, according to a recent Stop Skeletons from Fighting video. Just, nothing on SNES.
Mission Impossible, the game based on the late 80s version of the series (Pre Tom Cruise) was a great game, difficult as hell but excellent, it deserved a snes continuation.
Starrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr troppicssssssss! ps Metal Storm is amazing and holds up very well. Also Zelda 2 lives on as one of the most entertaining speed runs in GDQ
I believe that there was a Super Kid Icarus mentioned very briefly in an old issue of Nintendo Power, but nobody seems to remember it. kidicarus.wikia.com/wiki/Super_Kid_Icarus Also, this list is seriously lacking in StarTropics.
Blaster Master didn't get an SNES sequel, at the time just a Genesis one, and a PS1 game. It recently did get what looks to be a remaster of the first game, though it crosses elements of the US and Japanese versions. It's on the new Nintendo consoles.
We had to wait quite a while, but blaster master zero and it's sequel for 3ds, switch and pc finally delivered on the blaster master we were hoping to get on the snes. :P
A zelda 2 remake with more reasonable difficulty curves and better npcs/ambiance would probably be a really good classic game that I would love to play. There are a million other improvements that could be made to make it even better. A "reimagining" instead of just a remake, would probably go over very well
Fam, Blaster Master was a great game. They could release a sequel now and I would cop it. The music was great. Never played the Genesis sequel. Could you imagine the graphics upgrade with better gameplay? Now that would a game to play while doing social distancing.
Just a quick thought on Zelda II: one hugely important change would be increasing Link's sword length. Besides making saving friendlier, that was probably my biggest gripe.
@Aaron Thanks for the tip, though I was also talking about having to (almoat) always start from the starting place instead of continuing from the beginning of a dungeon, the last town you visited, etc. :)
Blaster master is on switch as we speak named blaster master zero.... it's really really good funny thing I'm actually playing it this minute.great videos man
Fun fact about the GBA copy of Crystalis: You can't complete it. (unless subsequent releases patched this issue.) Once you go into the final area, the last boss never spawns and you're stuck in that room.
Error is not pointless! The first time you meet him, he just tells you his name, but this is just to set it up for later, when someone else in Mido tells you to "ASK ERROR OF RUTO" for an important hint. Granted, they weren't doing themselves any favors with a weird name like that, like it's no surprise that very few people understood that "I AM ERROR" means "my name is Error".
I know this video is very old but I was surprised because you usually very thorough on your knowledge a video games that when you brought up River City Ransom never brought up any of the Japanese only sequels to the on is super famicom in Japan. The other thing that was kind of surprising was you said Kid Icarus only sequel was on the 3DS what about the Gameboy game that came out wasn't that a sequel are the extension of the universe of Kid Icarus?
Darius Twin is a reasonable facsimile of Life Force, which I personally enjoyed because of its cooperative mode. And I’m holding out on the hope for a 3D Zelda II remake.
A little off topic, but I'd like to see one of the older Pokemon games get the "Link Between Worlds" treatment as you had mentioned with Link II. It's like, why would I want to buy and play the same game from all those years ago with the same storyline with updated graphics, when you could do so much more with a franchise. The day Pokemon has the balls to change the formula is the day I start giving GameFreak money again.
Metal Storm was one of the most underrated, awesome games for the NES - one of my all-time favorites. An SNES sequel would definitely have been in my collection.
