Well I remembered one 5 yard section of my ferreting long nets had a little damage where it had been chewed by a rabbit, so I decided to repair it and show you how it is done. Repairing nets isnt hard, just takes a little practice, and is very simple, only using sheet bend knots. Its exactly the same method to repair sea fishing nets, whether they are drift herring / mackerel, or anchored bass / turbot / skate / sole nets. It is better to make the new meshes slightly bigger than smaller than the original meshes, as a smaller mesh with distort the net, but a larger mesh wont. All you need is twine, scissors and a net needle, all basic, cheap tools.

Net mending is becoming a lost art. My father used to not only mend net, but also buy twine or monofilament to create whole nets. He made 3 cast nets, one from cotton twine in the early 1950s, one from Nylon twine in the late 1950s, and a monofilament net in the late 1960s. I think it took him a year's worth of weekends to complete each. He also made a 6' x 100' gillnet from monofilament too. That net we used in stream in our backyard for grey mullet, and milkfish. After that he bought bulk mono netting from Japan, and strung the floats, and lead himself. My job was casting the weights for the lead line. This was 50 years ago. He made crab hoop nets too, and he taught me how to mend nets. Gillnetting was made illegal here in Hawaii 25 years ago, so I had to get rid of them, and haven't mended a net since.

Your father was very dedicated to make nets from scratch. Well done to him. There used to be a lot of house wives in this area that used to make and repair herring nets to earn extra income in the early and mid part of last century. The whole area was built on the herring industry. Unfortunately the herring were over fished, and it was banned in the late 1970s, causing the whole industry to collapse, never to recover. The only people that eat them now are pensioners

That was a good lesson on how to do it. I probably will never need to do it but it was good watching you. You could do that in your sleep. I surpose if they get a hole in a net they just throw them away like everything else these days. Time you can get out and do stuff again your gear will be in tio rop condition.

Its a lot harder doing it in with a tripod in the way! The nylon herring nets we use, you cant buy them anymore in 2" mesh size, so we have to keep repairing them. Monofilament herring nets get ripped so badly by seals, we dont bother repairing them anymore, it takes so long, so we put new lints in when they get bad
