This is just a short video on how to repair a 2 1/8 inch monofilament drift net. Monofilament is very slippery, so I use two sheet bends on every knot to secure them. We use these 2 1/8 inch nets to catch mackerel in the summer, and full herring in the autumn on the Norfolk and Suffolk coast, UK. This is a dying art, with very few people drift netting anymore. Its been taken over by trawling, which catches far more fish, and you havent got to pick fish out of the net one by one. It’s been traditionally used off our coast for centuries, supply herring all over the world. The old boys used to say ‘if you can’t rig or repair it, you shouldn’t be using it’. This technique can be used on all types of nets, whether they are for cod, bass, dover sole, skates and rays, red mullet, sprats and many other types of fish. The only difference is the mesh size changes.
