I want to add that for people looking to use this as their main computer, be sure you install drivers and keep the laptop cool. This laptop uses a single sheet of copper to cool the cpu and the battery gets hot when charging. It will turn itself off if you overheat it. This is a safety feature to protect the cpu. I typically run a little fan pointed at the laptop and only use the laptop on cool surfaces like a table. If you want to use the laptop in bed, do not place directly on blanket. Keep it on your lap. To get most of the drivers, be sure to run Windows Update ASAP when you start the laptop for the first time. Find WIndows Update by clicking Start button, hover mouse cursor over the gear icon on the left, and click Settings. In settings, click "Update & Security". This will open Windows Update and if it isn't already checking for updates, click "Check for updates" button. YOU MUST LEAVE WINDOWS 10 S MODE TO INSTALL NON-MICROSOFT STORE PROGRAMS. YOU NEED A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT TO LEAVE S MODE. Windows Update will do it's best to get the drivers for the computer, but it is not enough. It will not retrieve the drivers for the intel graphics. To get the intel graphics driver, you need to go to intel website and install automatic detection tool for your hardware. This tool will not only detect the computer's components, but automatically update your drivers directly from Intel, the manufacturer of the cpu. This means no waiting on Gateway. Overall, I think this laptop is an amazing piece of hardware if you know what you're doing. I bought mine for $109 refurbished which is an unbelievable value for this level of performance. I have the Windows 11 update message but I don't want to update because Windows 10 is pretty.
I want to add that Gateway is currently working on releasing the drivers for download. They're using a dropbox at the moment and giving out the links to the drivers on their website. You have to go to the product page of your model and then request the drivers in the question section. Some people have already asked and the manufacturer has been responding with the links.
I bought one to try out some animation software just for the heck of it. Everything runs perfectly fine without any lag or complications whatsoever. The touchscreen is very useful when drawing but you’ll definitely need a stylus.
These things are generally available as refurbs for around $100 now, which might make one an even better deal than ever. Your video review tipped the scales for me and I sincerely appreciate your candid review methods.
Just picked up one of these for a cheap light travel laptop so I wouldn't need to drag my gaming laptop places. Honestly I love it. It's not remarkable, but it works great when I want to do some writing or light photo touch ups. And Windows 11 runs great on it do far.
I'm a laptop snob. I had to buy one of these for a pseudo emergency thinking I'd just need to use it once and then get rid of it. I love it! It's perfect for just general browsing. I find myself using it more than my big powerful laptop. I would say a USB C would be more useful than a mini hdmi that will need an adapter for almost every application.
I have a gateway laptop, the model is the GWTN-156-1BK 15.6" display 16 GBs of ram Resolution 1920 x 1080 120Hz refresh rate 256 GB SSD Bluetooth 5.1 10th gen Intel core I5
This laptop is a part of my living room entertainment center along with my xbox series s and ps5. I play indie games and emulators nes, snes, genesis, mame, n64 and lite steam games with this laptop on my 65 inch big screen. When I'm on the go I disconnect it and take it with me.....kinda like a switch....but way less powerful. For bigger pc gaming I have my omen gaming laptop.
Watched this video on my Samsung laptop (netbook, whatever), with Intel Celeron Dual-core N3060, 4GB ram and 32GB emmc storage, with 11.6" HD TN panel. I'm 52 years old. not a third grader. I feel like your Gateway is much better than my Samsung. But hey, I'm still loving my low-powered netbook as you call it. It gets me through the things I need to do. Like watch your videos.
Would definitely be great for primary school kids as a first laptop. Great review, as always... And might I add, your lighting looks much improved now. 👌🏾
@@ComputerStuff one more thing. So I have some understanding of the differences between Intel core processors i3, i5, i7 and i9. But when it comes to the differences between same generation, same "i" variant processors such as i711800H vs i71165G7 or i711370H I'm pretty much clueless. Could you please consider doing a video explaining the differences?
@@ComputerStuff I appreciate you making the time to record and upload such an informative video upon request. Very well spoken and was of great help to me. Thank you very much!
The display being too heavy for the rest of the laptop is the same problem my ASUS eee pc netbook had in 2010. That's just a universal problem with little laptops in general, especially for a laptop like this with a glass screen.
Definitely would get this laptop. I have a big bulky Gaming laptop (typing here right now on) that I hate taking with me to coffee shops and things just to do schoolwork on and been looking around for a cheap little laptop for those purposes and I think I found my answer. TY so much, you earn a Thumps up 👍
@@ComputerStuff I just ordered this for that deal, one I bought I started looking it up and I’m seeing all these awful review and I’m so scared now 😩 would going out of S mode really mess it up. I was just going to use it to watch movies
honestly was a mistake for me to get this new and install linux mint in it and now I have no access to wireless connection. well at least this thing still has some use to it when you have usb tethering. hell, I'm using it right now watching this vid and typing down in the comments
You truly are amazing and funny as all get out! Sadly, I know little to nothing about computers. Your reviews are so refreshing and easy to follow. You make me want to become more computer savvy... As I should. It doesn't appear they are going anywhere and I don't plan on kicking up any daisies anytime soon either!😉 I am truly grateful I happen to stumble upon your video while looking for a laptop. Welp, you can now include me on your list as a NEW "Stalker"🤪... Of course I'm kidding... "Follower." Also, I will gladly inform others of your entertaining, but still informative page so we all can learn a little something while laughing a bit (good for the soul)😄! Thank you again and I can't wait to check out what's next.
I heard that someone’s Gateway Laptop crashed the afternoon they got it. I had it for less than 2 months and now it won’t turn on just because I closed the laptop and it was very laggy💀
Thank you for this awesome review! We just picked one of these up for our son as his first laptop. He just needed something simple to play minecraft and roblox and maybe put Netflix on. Thanks to you I feel confident that this will be perfect for him. 😁
I love you. We use it in the kitchen for recipes and for my husband to look at auto parts and other junk on Amazon. I just did a zoom workshop on it and the speaker was iffy but I'm deaf so most laptop speakers are iffy and it will not Bluetooth to my hearing aids which is a bummer. Or I'm doing it wrong. I just got it yesterday so I'll figure that out later. Or I'll hook up the Bose. The keyboard is small for my ham hock hands so I use an external wireless keyboard and it's perfect. I generally despise HP but I have thousands of dollars in that junk around here so this one is just right for its purpose. Some responses are a little clunky but I expected as much.
Quick question: I just picked up this laptop and love it! But one thing that pisses me off is having to use the Function Key to adjust the volume via the keyboard. Is there any way to disable it so you don’t have to press the Fn key to use the function keys?? Also sometimes the num lock or something will activate and some letters also have corresponding numbers or symbols and you can’t type the letter (even on tablet mode and I actually press the number, it will type the % symbol). Very annoying otherwise I love this computer
Glad you're enjoying it. There should be a feature called "Function Lock". If I remember there may be an option on the keyboard, but there is also a toggle in Windows 11 to enable this. This should allow the funciton keys to be "always on" thus not needing to hold the FN button.
It would probably be ok for a highschool, use it for your school work only, type thing. But if you want to get into anything crazy like gaming or editing its just not meant for that!
Thank you for an honest review. I have been considering one of these for a cheap laptop to carry with me so I can do patient evals on the go without taking my $900 gaming laptop on an ambulance where anything could happen to it. If anyone else has opinions about this please reply and let me know.
You can use a micro SD card for additional storage, don't need an external drive. 256, or 512 GB for less than $100 and it just stays there... Wish this had a little faster processor, would make it an easier buy.
You'd be better off with a low profile flash drive in the usb 3.0 slot. This has the cheapest possible card reader and is locked to like 25mb/s read & 20mb/s write. (I have a emulator set up on an SD in mine, wish I'd just bought a thumb drive)
This is on sale during labor day weekend for $109 at Walmart and I was just wondering how well it does for gaming. Specifically playing Roblox. Any lagging? I would appreciate any help or suggestions from anyone here. Thank you ahead of time. Great review btw :)
Thanks LMS. This thing is definitely not a gaming machine. If I had to guess it might struggle playing Roblox but if you want to try it, Walmart will take it back if it doesn't work for you.
I just got this laptop for school. Does everything I need it to. The only thing that I have a problem with is the speakers. They are not loud at all. You have to have headphones
That's a Windows thing. There are a variety of methods for changing or brute forcing into a laptop, none of which are too easy for most people. YOu may want to consider just reinstalling windows.
I use the same laptop but mine has a chracked screen :( but it still works.. but its just not the same so I might replace the screen someday :D anyway its pretty tough being able to handle alot of stuff :D
I just bought mine today quit literally today before I watched this video and I was like oh dam I f up but I guss not still didnt unbox it yet I just needed a laptop to study for my exams and after I pass them ill watch youtube and Netflix whatnot
buy your son a Lenovo 10e Chromebook. It is $99, it has webcam and attachable keyboard (you have to buy it separately for $30). It uses ChromeOS which many schools are using at the moment. This Gateway laptop is very good for work and school, but they are not very durable for the kids. Walmart DOES sell a strong, waterproof/shockproof Gateway laptop for kids, but it is $279.00 instead of the $109 this video's laptop is. You also don't get support unless you buy the walmart insurance. Lenovo will provide support.
It cannot run those programs in Windows 10 S Mode unless you download and install from Microsoft Store If you leave S Mode, you can install Adobe Illustrator and Sims I do not recommend Sims 3 and Sims 4, but Sims 2 should run fine Remember that this laptop does not have fans so it will get hot and if the laptop gets too hot it will turn itself off to keep itself safe
@@ComputerStuff if you look up the components on intel's website, intel will bring up NUC drivers. The laptop battery is also the same used in the EVOO laptops. I suspect these Gateway laptops are made from leftover Intel NUC and EVOO laptops.
so just bought this and set up a password witch i have now removed because i cant get numbes lock off. so if any one can help me please do so. yes i tryed puching the numbers lock i also went thro settings. HELP HELP HELP
Hi there I'm a university student and I typically use Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote only. Can this device run those programs without any problems ?
Do you have problems with it shutting off? i want to just plug it in and let it be on all the time for my online business. it keeps shutting off for some reason
When a computer shuts itself off it can be for a couple reasons, 1 is overheating, but 2, which sounds like what you may be having, is that your computer is set to hybrid sleep. In other words, after long periods of time your computer goes to sleep, then turns off for hybrid sleep. This is an option you can disable to prevent from shutting down.
Keep the laptop off of warm surfaces like blankets. This laptop does not have active cooling fans, so it passively cools itself by heat dissipating through the material. It uses a single sheet of copper on the cpu so be nice with it especially when charging the battery.
Just got mines today I run my studio daw presonus it runs excellent love it runs way better for music for that I can say it neck to neck with Mac book as far as making music goes that what I do it’s perfect and a hidden gem for music developers
If you can get the drivers to play well, I would recommend Ubuntu Studio - all the tools you need for audio and video production! I'm using Ubuntu Mate 22.10 - might need to use that, then load the studio additions. Only 45GB after install so need external for more space. I'd say the lowest line from Apple would easily surpass this little Celeron, though. RAM alone already beats it - 4GB isn't that good. It's enough to run one application at a time, maybe two.. but from my experience; get an Asus ZenBook for anything serious. The i7 with 16GB is a better runner up for comparing PC and Mac lol
Holy shit :3 .. a small portable laptop that doesn't require lots of energy to run. I WANT IT In all seriousness Im a huge fan of netbooks and I'm glad they are bad. Never understood why people buy chunky laptops.. even the display hinges go bad on those. I had the ASUS EEE 1001PX (the Intel Atom N450 = Intel Pentium III 1400S + Nvidia Riva TNT), ASUS X205TA (Intel Atom Z3735F = Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz + Nvidia GeForce 2 Ultra) ASUS E200 (Intel Atom X5-Z8300 = Intel Pentium 4 2.6 GHz but with 4 cores + Nvidia GeForce 3 Ti500).... with the first one I played games up to 1998, plus Snes9x and ePSXe emulation through an older revision of the emulator with Pete's DirectX6 video plugin... lots of Thief, Stronghold, Quake 2, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo 2... with the second one I played Prince of Persia The Sands of Time, NFS Underground, Max Payne plus PS1 emulation ofc.. with the last one I had Discord, played World of Warcraft, Gears of War, Need for Speed World on private servers and was using it to triangulate lidar laser scanned data on Cloud Compare that I then retopologized manually in Blender. All on these 150$ machine that I could take with me, while holding it with 2 fingers while I go take a shit.
If you install Ubuntu Mate 22.10, it'll be even better! I'm averaging around 20hrs on a single charge - and much more speed and internal storage getting away from Windows!!
I just got 2 of these as Christmas gifts for our 8yo twins. As far as I can tell they will play Roblox, Minecraft etc. Will they run the game Poppy's Playtime? Also, can you tell me what the graphics card is in them. I don't know a whole lot about graphics cards and tried looking it up. I would check if the box says but I already wrapped them. 🤦♀️
I don't see why you couldn't play Poppy's Playtime. This computer has integrated graphics - in other words its not crazy powerful but will get the job done. I think 8yos will do well with this as their first computer.
Update... sadly, these will not run Poppy playtime. They do however run their other games. We will be returning them tomorrow and upgrading. Any suggestions for other 2 in 1 laptops that are around $300?
@@painesrose Thanks for the update. The problem is anything in the 300 range will have integrated graphics, which I'd imagine is your biggest bottleneck for that particular game. If you can either up the budget slightly or find something used that may be a better course of action.
This computer uses an Intel N4020 CPU @ 1.1Ghz and has built-in Intel UHD Graphics 600. It CAN run those games really well, but it will get hot. This laptop does not have any fans to dissipate heat. What you could do is open up the bottom of the laptop and place a fan facing downward but at that point just spend a few more dollars on a laptop WITH fans. Minecraft, Poppy, and Roblox are very easy to run games if the kids don't install mods. Just remind the kids not to have the laptop on a blanket or something warm, keep it on a table and maybe put something underneath the laptop to keep it elevated in the air.
Yes you can run Linux. I have used Linux Mint on this laptop. The problem is that it does not have network driver. This laptop has Realtek 8723DU which supports 802.11bgn and Bluetooth 4.2. It only supports 2.4Ghz networks so you cannot use 5Ghz. It is typically found in televisions, ip cameras, and other small smart devices. TO GET THE DRIVER do the following (Ubuntu): press CTRL+ALT+T on keyboard to open terminal and enter: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kelebek333/kablosuz open Synaptic package manager, click Reload button refresh package cache, search either rtl or dkms. Scroll down to find out the list of driver packages, then right-click on the one for your chipset and select ‘Mark for Installation’, finally click on Apply button to install it. OR you can run command in terminal to install the driver (replace rtl8723de-dkms in the code): sudo apt install rtl8723de-dkms The wireless network should work immediately after you installed the driver.
@@lightly-red-huedmaleindivi6266 wow that's alot, but when ur right ur right my friend thanks for that. It's definitely not a bad little laptop. I'd recommend them.
Now regarding this laptop in particular.. Intel Celeron N4020 w Intel UHD600 = Intel Core2 Duo E6850 3 GHz + Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT. With this machine I could enjoy Gran Turismo and Tekken 6 with PPSSPP, I'd play Tomb Raider Legends and Microsoft Flight Simulator X with ease. These are not useless machines.
No it isn't useless. As suggested in the video, my goal was to find the worst laptop in the world, but this wasn't it. By all accounts for its price and what it was meant for - I did not hate this thing!
@@ExpressedFeelings haha of all the great games like Deus Ex, Resident Evil 4 and Half Life 2 that can be played on it.. you want Roblox.. oh well.. yes yes it can play Roblox but you might have to lower the resolution and disable any post processing effects.
Yes but you need to sign up for a Microsoft account in order to do so Just make a throwaway email account with Protonmail and then immediately delete that Microsoft account if you do not want it
You can upgrade the storage by using an external hard drive/ssd in the left side USB slot OR you can insert a micro sd into the right side of the laptop.
Got one to try…Junk… Only about 15 feet from my router and kept getting “no connection.” Everything else I was using round me , no issues. Slow….Slow….oh yea and slow….
Have you tried the new MacBook Air?! Sounds like you may have gotten a lemon as far as the wireless is concerned - that said this laptop is by no means a Ferrari (or advertised as such).
This laptop only supports 2.4ghz wifi. You need to make a second access point for your network so this laptop can use it. OR you can buy a usb network adapter that supports dual-band 2.4ghz/5ghz and use that instead.
Bought this for my husband. All he uses on my computer is TVG and Tic Tok. Nothing else... No email no Netflix nothing... So this should be great right? Eh... Big learning curve for both of us. We are computer illiterate.
i bought two of them and they are actually the best value for money when you are looking for a windows machine. And i got 200GB of cloud storage and 1 year of O365 with each. So stop with the negative videos and the arrogant style
Your video title is really misleading and provides a lot of bias, which is not reflective if your actual review... I would suggest you change the title of your video btw, I specifically like the tablet mode for the couch as I have had a Lenovo Yoga in the past and did not want to pay the money for it. The small HDisk space is not an issue if you activate the online OneDrive of or sync it to Google drive
I liked this laptop and used clickbait for the title. Have fun with it and don't take it personally, Mr. Manicola. I'm glad you purchased additional Cloud storage. As I recall, I suggested this in the video. Perhaps consider watching the whole thing...
About damn right it's the worse computer in the world right out the box lasted for 2 hrs and stoped working don't by this people gateway was gone for so long for a reason
This laptop has a micro sd slot so buy a cheap 128GB micro sd (sells for $10-20 these days) and insert it into the slot. The computer will recognize it as a storage device and you can install programs onto it.
Of course I don't use it every day. I use a better computer every day. I don't hate this computer and if I had a kid maybe I'd give them this as their first machine or something, but this computer can not be used for serious tasks daily.
This year, (2024) I got this laptop as my very first laptop! Ever! At the age of 15. It started when i saw it on brandsmart, and they had it on sale and it was just..calling to me. It was so small, so cute, and stood out. I had already been begging my mom to get me a laptop before, but it wasnt something my family nor I took seriously. Until now. I begged my mom, she agreed the same day. And she tried to buy it but it sold out- so we bought it on their website. Timeskip to a week and a half. I got it and may I say. I use it for EVERYTHING. I LOVE IT, I USE IT FOR VIDEOS, MUSIC, BROWSING. I LOVE IT SM. I even bring it to school to make videos in my spare time! And might i say my editing improved immesnly switching from phone to computer. And before someone asks, I never had a laptop because all my school work and storywriting has been done of my school laptopm deleting my need for one. Untill now.
My 8yo daughter is using my 12yo Core-i5 convertible which is much more powerful, but bulky. I wonder if this less powerful will run as well, but for $50 used we might give it a try.
Looks like a good laptop for amateur radio use, the programs we use don't require huge amounts of computing power to run. But will it run off of a 12v battery without a inverter like the evolve?
I have the gwtn156-11bk opened it up to see if I could upgrade and everything is micro and permanent. So all i did was unplug the battery and the gold plate that the motherboard and all underneath. I did nothing. now it gets warm on back over this area, but doesnt power on. hmm
Just got this for $100 this Laptop is great for old school emulation it runs N64 pretty well but it will slow down slightly on big open areas, seen it mostly on banjo kazooie. And it runs PS1 flawlessly. Dont try any gen after those or it would probably blow up, need to research if it can run PPSSPP . Edit. Runs psp emulation pretty well too
My kids have these laptops and the wifi keeps disconnecting and then we cant even find the wifi button 😩 idk what to do i want to sell them for 50 each 😒
I picked up one because I needed something cheap that I could code & connect/run an Arduino with. The fact that it's small and foldable it's perfect for breadboarding and not take up a lot of desk space.
2023-10-13 I bought one of these from HSN with Windows 11 on it and I am sending it back ASAP.. Constantly having WIFI issues which are a pain in the ass to try and resolve with WIN 11. I couldn't even get Chrome or Firefox installed because Microsoft uses Win 11 to block downloading them from their source .
In the start menu should be an application called "Camera". if you search for that and open it you should be able to access it. Let me know if that helps.
