@@Dickstra64 Hungary 1954. Dutch tactics were often a case of doing just what was enough to win - the 1973 European Cup Final (when Ajax got away with it after Rep’s early goal), a crucial World Cup Qualifier in 1973 against Belguim, (when the Dutch nearly got knocked out), the 1974 World Cup Final (when they didn’t get away with it) and the 1976 European Championship Semi-Final against Czechoslovakia (when they did get knocked out).
@@gunternetzer9621up to the final they won all but one game with a 2 goal difference. Bit weird to claim they often did just enough to win. That was not the mentality of this team at all.
@@MM-dm4xj If you watch all 90 minutes of the games you'll see. In five of their seven matches, they looked for (and got) and early goal. Cruyff then dropped back acting as a cross between a traffic policeman and a liaison man between attack and defence and only rarely contributed any of his wide range of skills after the opening minutes and the team played mainly on the break. This criticism of Holland was made to many people before the final but the general opinion was that that this was the hall-mark of a truly great side - able to score an early goal and then do only what was necessary to win. It was a theory that was shattered in the final.
If this match would have been played now: - 10 times not offside - 1 clear penalty - a pitch that doesn't make you slide every 5 meters - 6 yellow cards - 2 red cards - 6 meters of 'rolling' after every tackle - no more 24 back passes to keeper - all millionaires
That Dutch side was one of the best in history. Travesty that they didn't win the World Cup in the 70s, and Argentina were flattered to have only lost 4-0.
Cruyff was great at telling others what to do -- directing the team -- but like Eusebio, he only really did it himself before he became a household name.
I remember watching this game live on TV in 1974. The movement and skill of the Dutch was mesmerising. They were brilliant, yet Germany caught them out in the final, thems the breaks!
Holland were lucky to make it to the World Cup. Belgium 🇧🇪 had a perfectly good goal disallowed in the 89th minute of their qualifying match. Had the goal stood, and had Belgium won: no Total Football in 1974. Thems the breaks....
@@bigbong620 Luck or lack of it, is part of the game and can happen to any team. If Puskas was not injured in 1954 final, I doubt Germany could have won the final. If Gordon Banks didn't get sick for the 1970 quarter final, the result could have been different. If the ref for that game was not blind or bias, England deserved to get a valid penalty when Beckenbauer brought down Collin Bell without touching the ball in front of the referee!! If there was no massive rain in 1974 before the Germany v. Poland game, Poland had a much better chance to beat Germany and reach the final. You can use similar assumptions for or against any team. The thing is people are silent when luck favors their favorite team, but scream injustice when it favors the opposition!!
Yes, an outstanding team. Only West Germany, Argentina and Scotland beat them in those two World Cups. Scotland really underachieved during this period when they had an outstanding team.
The loss was such a big dissapointment for us and it started like a dream but it became a nightmare. Our team wanted to humiliate the west-germans on their own soil, leader Cruijff wasn't at his best, Rensenbrink who was injured for the Brazil-match was still to injured to play but kept it to himself because he wanted to play the big final ,the invisible man was replaced at half time. They would have been memorable world champions. 4 years later we missed the world cup by an inch, absenties Cruijff and van Hanegem could have made the difference in Argentina.
@@heldersufiano2816 Pete Keiser , even though he only played one half against Sweden, and Dick Nanninga whose one or both legs were amputated (diabetes?) and scored the equalizer in 78 final. RIP to both of them as well.
@@partyguinness Argentina played 6 finals (1930/1978/1986/1990/2014/2022) and won 3, but never appeared in 4 finals in a row; the 1982 final opposed Italy against West Germany.
Extraordinaria la selección holandesa inolvidable" Naranja Mecánica" .vice campeón Mundial 74 y 78 . JOHAN CRUYFF.UNO DE LOS MAS GRANDES DELANTEROS A NIVEL MUNDIAL.
Man, this takes me back! I was watching Bundesliga matches Saturday afternoons on PBS with Toby Charles. World Cup was pretty much only available in Los Angeles through KMEX Spanish language broadcast and I had really sketchy broadcast reception. But I remember the passion & do to this day!
Popular opinion has it that "the best team never to win the world cup was Brazil '82". To that, I say "bollocks it was!" The best team never to win the world cup was Holland '74.
Que time!

Holland were the most skilful side in the competition but in five of their seven matches, they looked for (and got) and early goal and then only attacked on the break. This may not have shown up on television, except perhaps in the final. This criticism of Cruyff and Co. was made to many people before the final but the general opinion was that this was the hall-mark of a truly great side - able to score an early goal and then do only what was necessary to win. It was a theory that was shattered in the final.

Argentina couldnt stand that loss to the dutch. Swept the entire quad. Only one Argentine player from that line up made it to the 1978 squad (Houseman). Fillol and Kempes were on it but not starters (imagine that). Rest totally discsarded.
