Today we're going to take a look at the classic Neumann U67. Known to be one of the best all-rounders ever made the Neumann U67 made it's debut in 1962, following in the footsteps of the granddaddy of all microphones the Neumann U47.

Excellent performance! I believe this mic pairs perfectly with your style of singing, the lows are so clear and the top end is never harsh. It is a career investment!

Its so nice watching you demonstrate all those classic and expensive microphones (which I could never afford) and other gear in a great musical context and very well produced. Theres been a lot of talk about Lewitts Pure Tube microphone - a "no nonsens", cardiod only, modern Tube microphone, which is not cheap but within reach of more people. I hope that you will get the chance to test The "Lewitt Pure Tube" with all you knowledge and musicianship and give us your thougtts upon it and maybe compare it to the classics

Thanks! I've actually reached out to Lewitt with no luck. Thanks for the support 🙏

Thank you Christian. Very good vocal performance...on "sacred material". ;) If you get a chance, I'd love to hear your review of the new Lewitt Pure Tube mic.

Hey it's always a risk to do a cover right haha!? I'm very interested in trying out lewitt mics but no luck so far when I tried to reach out to them. Thanks for watching 🙏

Great content! I very much enjoyed the comparison videos you did earlier. It makes it possible to evaluate how a piece of gear sounds, when you have some reference to judge against. Are you familiar with Nordic Audio Labs? It would be interesting to compare their mics to vintage originals, and since they are a small Finnish/Swedish operation, they might be receptive for the idea.

Beautifull sounding microphone, but i´ve heard similar for 1/10th of the price. Nice job.

Yes it's nice! In my honest opinion no microphone is worth 10k+ . It becomes a vanity piece beyond that. It is quite nice though 😎 Thanks for checking out the video 🙏

Hey Christian! Great video, as per usual. Have you had the chance to try the U89/TLM170(R or not)/TLM193 at all? If so, do you have any thoughts or feedback you could share? Thanks!

Hey, never used any of those mics. From what I've heard the U89 should be a bit more transparent then the u87. TLM is a sleeper especially the 80s version.

@@Christian_svedin Yes, heard the same about the 89. As far as I have read the current TLMs sound the same as older ones. Been thinking about mics for podcasting/VO AND music and don't want to spend $1200 on 3 SM7Bs or Ethos to then having to spend $ on other mics I would prefer for music recording. The TLM193 seems to be a great choice, as well as TLM107/MG umt70s-um71/OC818, etc. 2x193s and a U89 would be perfect, although I'd still want something like a Flea 47 at some point... But the 47 would be overkill for podcasting and VO... I may have made my choice on these... I'd have the transformer sound and polar patterns of the U89 and then 2 transformerless TLM193, cardioid version of the 170... I could do stereo, M/S and of course vocals and mono capturing (guitar cabs, etc) AND podcasting/VO... What do you think?

@@jsasa5668 I'd go with a vintage U87 if you can find one for a decent price. It sounds very natural and still has that magic vintage Neumann tone. It's also the IT VO mic. I've heard great things about the OC818. It's though, see if you can demo any of the current offerings

@@Christian_svedin U87 is tempting for sure. As far as I learnt the "vintage U87s were designed with tape saturation in mind, hence the peak in the upper mid range frequencies. Now with digital recording we don't need that as much unless we impart such saturation (during or post) for artistic reasons. You can always EQ a flatter response mic, but you don't have to compensate now with mic design if your technique is proper and your chain is clean. That's why the U98 was conceived. A U87 for modern recording where tape is not used for printing tracks". However, at the end of the day tone is tone, and subjective taste is that; subjective. U87s are easier to find used, maybe not vintage... So I may get one. U89s not as often. I do feel that many studios have the U87 the same way they have Pro Tools. It's not better, it's just what they have had forever (while probably true, I still like PT for mixing the best). I am not saying U87 is not good, I am saying that just because many people use them doesn't make them ideal or the best. It's just what people request and are used to. But I am still opened to it. I just thought that if I got the TLM193 route that the U89 will work better because they share capsule and lineage, especially in M/S. Also, U89 may work in more voices and sources than the U87 as it is flatter... We'll see... Now Sweetwater has OC818s (pair) discounted by $700... So, for $1500 I can have two... Something about their sound I don't like but they're tempting. Thanks for the response and sorry for the rambling.

@@jsasa5668 certain mics just sound right though and the U87 is one of those. I kind of changed my mind about the u87 (vintage) after I got my last one. It sounds so good, and have just enough presence and lowmid buildup. Easy to process And sounds classy

Well for vintage mics I do think it's still the M269. For in production mics I'd say GAP 8000, GAP Elam251 and Chandler Redd

I prefer U 87Ai over U 67 re-issue. Since U87ai sounds more rounded and fuller. But I prefer U 67 vintage over both U 87ai and U 67 (re- issue).

U87s sound brighter and have a less forgiving high-end and upper mids and doesn't carry as much low-mids though perhaps more low-lows. It's not rounder.

@@MrACangusyoungDCI argued that U prefer U87ai over U 67 re- issue version. U87ai is more rounded than modern U67 re- issue. But this U 67 vintage is more rounded than both U87ai and U 67 re- issue. I prefer U 67 vintage over other two. It sounds so fuller and natural.
