Great Review! echoing some of your points... my two cents and personal opinions: I have been terribly disappointed of the QC except the form and DSP power, but the quality and lack of effects is not acceptable at this price and for a unit of 2021...no swell, no intellipitch, no Autowah, no looper, no synth... also chorus and flanger are really so so...said so there is no timeline for NDSP to release a new firmware including these missing effects...as well missing a software/app it's primitive... even the old POD HD line had one... for me it's a the bottom of the list and perhaps I will evaluate to buy one back, when it will be sufficient...FM3 has a great sound but the DSP power and lack of FSW it was below my expectation, for someone liking Amps set in parallel and to be able to have a rig with multiple options on the fly by multiple FSW it's limited ... Helix after 3.0 firmware update is the best option (for me) only below Axe FX3, if it won't be for the size, which is really the worst aspect of Helix it would still be the king... also consider Helix allow with native to tra without the Helix and just use the Plugin to replicate the same rig you have on the hardware 😍... for the size who knows maybe Line6 will come out with Helix in a new form and it won't worth to wait for NDSP putting some standard Fx in their device. 👍🏻🤟🏻 cheers
The best review any gear can get is that it makes you want to use it and play more. It's still in its infancy, and I expect many more improvements are on the way. It is strange that it doesn't have a desktop App and a looper. I consider those as "must have" features, especially considering the price of the unit. I'm happy with my HX Stomp and expect to use it for a long time to come. Thanks
Thank you so much! Yes, I do agree...the fact the I want to play it more and more speaks by itself...and I agree also with you as regards the desktop app and the looper...it's a pity they are still not available.. Thank you for your message and for sharing your opinion!
Hi Leo, as I told you in another comment, I use the Quad Cortex in the studio and on stage as a profiler where I have the sounds of my tube amps stored - and I agree with you on all the pros and cons. I also miss the computer app, which is still to come, but when? The option to create profiles from my amps has become indispensable to me and is worth its weight in gold. I feel it is much more personal to have access to user-created amp profiles and IRs than pre-made ones, so I sold my Fractal Axe-Fx III Mark II. The Quad Cortex is undoubtedly still in its infancy, but it sounds much more musical than a Fractal FM9, for example, or how do you see it? By the way, I would also like to commend you on your work, as your tests are professional and fair! I always feel well informed on your channel and hope that your valuable contributions will remain with us for a long time. With collegial greetings from Germany Mic
Hi Mic, thank you so much, these are really great compliments...a huge reward for the effort I put in these videos: thank you so much!!! I agree with you about the computer app...it's really time for Neural to deliver it...I hate having to reach out the unit to change a parameter...the computer app is much more user friendly for recording purposes...I definitely miss it. I also agree with you about profiling...being able to put YOUR amp tone in this unit...is a big pro. On the other had the tweak-ability of the FM3 is really outstanding and you can reach a level of customisation that goes beyond anything else in the market...of course you have to spend time...but if you love tweaking and find new tones...Fractal is really helpful. I would not enter in the debate about which one of the two sounds better....I have an opinion...but tone is so personal that I prefer to keep it for me...I think that my objective is to give you the element to judge yourself.... In same cases, and for some units the sound is so bad that I have no problem telling my personal take...but in this case the differences in tone are at the level of personal preferences...in my opinion obviously. Thank you once more!
Hi Leo, my compliments came from the heart, because I can well imagine how much work goes into your videos. Then let's hope (and pray) that Neural DSP will grace us with an app very soon, because it really is overdue! The Fractal FM3 is undoubtedly a great unit, and I was very pleased with it. But I own a few tube amps built by small companies in Germany (on demand) that can't be found in any modeler. I love independent sounds that have a recognition value and a very personal touch. That's why the profiling option on the Quad Cortex was and is so interesting to me. If the FM3 had this option, I would not have sold the FM3. Which of the two devices is "better" or "worse" is not something I want to discuss here. For me, the Quad Cortex is the "better" choice because of the profiling option, because with it I could save the sounds of my tube amps for the future and use them on stage at any time. With kind regards from Germany Mic 🙂
Well. Ex-FXIII user here. To cut the story short: I actually wanted to sell the cortex for profit on the 2nd hand market. I was really sceptical! And then I got the QC… After 5 minute of use, I knew, that I will never sell the unit. Instead my Helix floor left me and my fractal too. I’m super happy!
Thank you so much for the excellent video! As I understand it, the QC runs 2 amplifiers in stereo without any problems, right!? I'm thinking about getting one, but until today, I couldn't understand if the QC works only with captures or if it comes with the traditional amp's and cab's simulations like other modelers. Another thing I'd like to ask you, Leo, is if the simulations of amps and pedals that come with it are good, or if it's better to get excellent sound from the QC with the captures?
Hi Daniel, you are welcome and I'm happy that you like the video!! Yes to all your 3 questions: QC can run two amps, it has also standard amp and pedals (I mean, it does not have only profiles) and they sound good, in my opinion! Thank you!
Hi Filippo, it has improved a lot with firmware upgrades. Now we have the looper, we have more amps and effects, etc. It is still laking the computer app (which for me is important) and the possibility to load Neural plugins. If for you these are not deal breaker features, I think it is still a very good unit. Thank you for your message!
Im literally just looking for the demo and review of Quad Cortex on your channel this morning, and this video just popped up, what a day! Thank you sir!
Great follow-up review. Loved the demo song as usual. I think it's a little over priced right now, but suspect it will come down a bit in the future. Also, availability is pretty weak right now too. With that said, I think it's a fantastic device with almost endless possibilities. I'll probably buy one in the future. Right now, I'm still loving my POD Go for it's ease of use, low price and great tones. God bless and rock on Leo 👍😎🎸
An interesting device, thanx for observation! Your music sounds equally great on any equipment, however :-) This brings me to a conclusion that a piece of equipment - either guitar or amp or else is just as good as the amount of inspiration it brings to an artist, which is unmeasurable in digits :-) P.S. If you say that it makes you want to play more - then this thing is definitely worth considering.
I really enjoy your detailed reviews! I have the Helix, Axe-FxIII, and the Quad Cortex. The Axe-Fx "feels" the best to me while playing, but I play my Quad Cortex way more since it is so easy to use and take places.
Great Video. Im thinking of getting a QC too, when I can afford it. I played Tube Amps most of my life, but for various reasons I am thinking of getting into the digital world. Seems like the QC sounds awesome, but what im wondering is how does it feel compared to a tube amp? Most modelers ive tested over the years (not the Big/expensive ones) didnt feel "right", cant really explain it, maybe you know what i mean?
Thank you, I'm happy that you like the video. Maybe you can check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xwHVa_jAUU0.html In that video I try to give you an idea to how the QC "feels" compared to the FM3...I hope this may help. Thank you!
@@LeoGibsonGtr Thanks for the reply!! Yes, your Video helped. Its not much difference, but i think for ne the QC is the better option (also since your video the price got raised), but im used to tube amps and dont need that much parameters and i think the cortex is very close, especially in your demo song the difference to the real deal was barely noticeable. To me it sounds a tiny bit more natural and less "artificial" than the FM3, thats something i also noticed in Rabea Massaads comparison with the Kemper. That was a great and helpful comparison, thanks for your time and effort, i really appreciate that! 👍😎😎
Honestly, it sounds really good. It's a bit more natural sounding than the Helix, that still suffers from a sterile vibe. Sadly, the cons will throw off many potential buyers. No Looper? This is a substantial tool for solo artists playing in the streets or at small venues. But sonically it's very pleasing. Thank you for another great review!
Leo, you deserve a ton of subscribers. Every time I need a comparison between different pedalboards, you already got the job done for us. I am really thankful because, aside your reviews, I LOVE your songwriting! Cheers mate!
Seems like many demo videos sounded great on the presets alone. Spending lesser time on tweaking & more on playing is vital IMHO. Thanks for the share Leo. As always helpful info & super great composition. #staysafe 🤘🏾🎸
As 3 month owner, I am very pleased with the unit itself, finding their am-models and effects ("devices") usable and capture feature is nice features. Of course, nothing beats QC in its small form factor, ease of building a signal chain from zero ground, routing them to outputs. The weaknesses or improvement areas that I have found are: how one can put blocks in one signal path to utlitize the DSP power. As it is advertised as having substantial DSP power, some devices are not available and are "greyed"(probably some delay and reverbs within one preset in different paths). This is one area of disappointment but sonically the present "limit" are acceptable. But is not expected to be and hopefully this will be resolved in the coming updates. In addition, as a neural plug-in owner, I am still thinking that the sounds in the unit are not at par with Plugs-in, when the plug-in converter will be available how the plug-ins will be incorporated into Quad Cortex, e.g . if the effects and amps can be separated used with other devices of Quad Cortex? These are the areas I am looking forward to be resolved or improved in the future. But once again, your review is very good guidance to someone who is looking at these units QC, Helix and FM3. I still believe QC is my preferred choice.
Hi Tony, thank you for sharing your opinion and experience! I waiting for the plugin integration too...I'm also curious to verify how it is gonna be implemented! As regards effect chain, it is an area of improvement and where, for what there is written in the QC web site, Neural is putting energy and effort...so I think it's gonna improve in the future...we have to wait and see! I'm happy you like the video...thank you once more!
I keep hearing that these units gray out areas when they’re pushed hard and I wonder out loud why there’s not a port for expansion. I fully admit I’m an old timer and no electronic engineer but I do go all the way back to the days of the rack mount jam man and we could open it up and add memory. I could do reverse tape effects live, on crazy Jimi Hendrix excursions, that no one else around me was able to do. Is this just a case of them holding back something simple that they could “ add on” at a price later? I also remember back to the days when the companies over here in the states got limited to the Reticon and SAD memory chips. Limited, More like cut off so companies couldn’t produce, while the overseas companies started putting out copies, from what I understood. Leo thank you for all your videos obviously put a lot of time into them. You have helped me decide to move from the NUXMG 30 to the pod go. That should suit me fine for home recording and be good enough for ampless gigs, And possibly even an add on to my pedal boards, On occasion.
I got my unit 2 weeks ago and was also wondering the same and came across this explanation on 2 different videos where it was mentioned that each line has a processor assigned, so they advice to split the signal across all 4 lines to to spread the resources and utilize all 4 processors of the unit. Here is one of the videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rioh6adspuM.html Hope this helps.
Another great video with awesome playing.. Just a thought, what about a metal shootout between all the top end modellers? I do appreciate if this is not your style, it might help a lot of viewers though, the high gain amps seem to amplify any shortcomings in tone, and highlight any strange artefacts (like for example, when doing a pedal steel type bend, there is a third component to the sound, a descending whoosh, sorry I can't describe that better, common in line 6 marshall models) any how, thanks again.
Hi, thank you, your appreciation of the video is really important for me! Yes, I would like to do it, but I'm not sure if my EVH 15 watt is a good real amp to use... Thank you!
Glad to see your channel growing quickly, though not as much as it deserved. (If it's not asking too much, could you rewrite my question in English the right way (or any subscriber who sets out to do so)? My English is not very good, and I am curious to know what the same question would look like if spelled correctly and most commonly used in English).
Hi Roberto, I'm not mother tongue.. and your question is properly written...I would just make little corrections: "Glad to see that your channel is growing quickly, thought not as much as it deserves" Thank you!
@@LeoGibsonGtr Thank you so much for answering my question! I wrote "deserved" because in Portuguese (PT-BR) we usually conjugate this verb in the past tense in situations like this. By the way, I already knew that English is not your native language (despite your good English) and it reminded me that you have a promise to keep. 😂
As someone who can only speak English, I admire both of you for being able to speak multiple languages. Don't worry Roberto--your English is a lot better than you realize!
I got one here in Australia, and our dollar is only buying 75 cents US, so, even more expensive here, but luckily I paid the old price before the new price hike, and thankfully, even though orders were full, the guitar shop ordered two extra for the shop and I got one! I do gigs here in casinos and other places which don't allow backline, so I've used BluGuitar Amp1 mercury with a blubox which is doing okay. I am really impressed with QC and with already a great library of amps, I'm excited to be getting more! I even saw that someone has said there is a Dumble we can all get our hands on! Honestly, I don't like lugging equipment and I don't have roadies anymore to do it for me, so that's a big plus too! Even without future updates, I'd buy one.
Hi Tony, thank you for sharing your opinion and experience…and yes…I agree with you… I also don’t want to carry with me heavy rigs anymore… Thank you once more!
Think it is worth any cent, especially you played it 👍 ( great intro track, love it ) May also consider one but was in Milan got a guitar, so now save🥴🤔
Hi Leo many thanks for yours video, very interesting and very instructive, one demand, please please make a video how made sounds with different of these pedalboard (, Helix, Kemper, mooer etc..) that you have a very nice sound with yours guitars, thanks. Best regards from Barcelona
Great review! I was lucky and got one a month ago. I haven’t used Fractal or Kemper so this world is a bit new to me, but the QC does sound amazing. Like you I have a bunch of guitars and with the QC there’s so many options available that you can make any guitar sound great. Also it’s very easy to use. I spend less time being frustrated with something I need to tweak in my rig and more just playing. Look forward to trying it live, this autumn I hope!
Great review as usual Leo! Yes the price hike is v disappointing, but as you say, when you consider the recording capabilities then it begins to make a bit more sense. Agreed, desktop app is a must for me too, however, a looper I can live without! In any event I think these two things will be added in time which will then make make it an attractive proposition for me. I would be interested to know if you think this floor modeller (and others) are more suitable for live playing compared to traditional amp/pedal board setups? I don't know if you have made a video about this.
Hi, thank you, I'm happy you like it! Yes, I think that one of the main benefit of these unit is their live use...you can have a consistent sound gig after gig, without the need to carry with you an heavy set up...they are very convenient! Thank you once more!
I was interested by Quad Cortex but the price refresh me. So I turn to the FM3 and I don't regret anything today. The only thing I can tell you is that is easier to create a nice sound with the Quad Cortex than the FM3 : it's obvious ! ! I don't know how works the CPU with the Quad Cortex and I hope you can set more and more effects in this unit than the FM3. With the FM3 and if you decide to built huge sound with a great Amp, 2 Cabs, a huge Delay and a huge Reverb... the CPU will near the 75 or 80% !!!... That means that you cannot set more effects and it's finished. I think it was the main problem with the FM3. I don't know. What do you think Leo ?
Hi Phil, in my demo review of the FM3 I tested the max effect limit of the unit, and if you don't use pre amps or reverb with quality maxed out, I think you can obtain good signal chain. As regards the QC, actually the limitation is more in the type of effects available, that are much less than the ones of the FM3...even if they should increase with future firmware upgrade. Nevertheless the effect "argument" is pretty interesting and I hope the be able to make a video on this topic in the coming weeks Thank you!
@@DomTremendous I'd rather use an app for creating a preset and for small adjustments the single knob system (like on Mooer) works great and fast. I don't like the idea of touching something that has contact with dirty boots especially on stage - I just don't know any reason to do any major modification this way
@@mojito510 Yeah I get that. It's surprisingly good though. You can change settings really quickly with the 10 row buttons. For me, it's worth the price of a quick handwash. 🙂
Cons: - Cheap power transformer for 1.800 euros product - No changing led colour for scene mode - lack of effects I'll wait until can buy a completly developed product for to do my inversion.
Your reviews are the best man. Actually leaning towards the fm3 or quad cortex but i want to wait for the upcoming Amp X from Thomas Blug. It is another flagship but with an analog approach which could really be a gamechanger.
Touch screen as done it for me , never been a computer guy , and here I am already creating some great tones , very pleased , and bought before the price rise 😎
Thank you Francisco...really appreciated!!! It's never enough...but I'm really happy for the community we are building...all your comments and suggestions are really useful and you push me forward to always try to do the best I can!
The Quad Cortex is one of the best musical purchases I’ve ever made. I’m very happy with mine, and this is the first modeler I have kept.. i have always been a tube amp snob. The sounds from the unit are stellar. I would like to see more and better effects, but I’m making due with what is currently available in the unit.
At this price point, nobody should ever have to wish they had “more and better effects”… Although I agree that the UI is better than the FM3, the Fractal effects are second-to-none, especially after the Cygnus update. And yes, I have a QC in addition to a FM3 and and AxeFx III
I'm testing qc in these days. Super audio board all in one. My 2 cents: the cab section is awesome. They will expand this section in future. My irs are obsolete :-) cabs have the "quid". Cab and posteq..micidial results
Hi, at the beginning I was also upset by the external PSU, but it has its pro. For instance you can build a pedalboard with the QC and other pedals, driving it with an external power supplier. of course if you use the QC alone it is a cons...as the risk is to miss the power brick / forget to bring it with you... Thank you for your message and for sharing your opinion!
@@LeoGibsonGtr Hi Leo. Good to hear from you. A great review by the way (and, as ever, great playing). Regarding the Neural:- I'm not convinced as the Neural uses a 12v 3000ma psu, so not compatible with standard pedalboards. For me the external psu is just one more bit of easily breakable and/or plastic to lose, and it makes a mockery of the otherwise small neat solidly made design. I'm pretty certain that 99% of potential buyers would prefer a slightly larger case and built-in power. Perhaps I'll wait for the Mark II model: internal psu, USB C, clip-on effects pedal (ie no wires), etc....
Great review...I think if Neural develop the shit outa the QC they will be untouchable . It's already really good, and after major firmware updates are realeased and some fine tuning to the models and the capture process is done, it will be the ultimate guitar/Bass in a box tool, ever..xox
Hi Leo, what would you say the latency of this unit is compared to the other units and especially the boss gt 1000 which you mentioned had the lowest in one of your other videos?
Hi, I'm not very sensible to latency (having played a lot of guitar synth in the past) and I didn't experience any noticeable latency with the QC....but I have to do a detailed video in order to check it out properly. Thank you for your message!
I ordered one. The selling point for me were the effect channels and crossover. I wanted a Kemper but didn't buy one due to this. The cited solution was to buy 2 Kempers. Yeah, no. Bass player if that matters.
Awesome video Leo, I have bought the QC based on your videos and it is perfect for me, Thank you. It would be great if you could add some your presets to the Neural Cloud 🙏
Thank you, I'm super happy that you like the video!!! Yes, you are right....I should do some present to load on the QC web site....the time is missing...I hope to be able to do them in the coming weeks... thank you once more!
Very nice review, demo song and playing on said demo song. It was enjoyable to listen to your song and your playing on it, and you gave cogent, thought-provoking points on the unit and its several features without being overly critical nor mindlessly cheerleading. Good job.
Thank you, this is a great compliment...and when you like my music...I'm super happy!!! By the way, if you like the demo song, maybe you can check out this playlist of songs of mine: ru-vid.com/group/PL5d6_Yq6oCrwnnNHTA0KoVX-H6L1Jo134 Thank you!!!
That’s the 2nd video of yours that I’ve watched and I found both of them super useful. I’m sure that I will buy the QC because I’m spending a lot of time thinking and reading about it haha. One day I feel it’s better to wait a year until the bugs are gone and it’s more developed then the next I question this rationale. Let’s see. Thank you for the review - I am a new subscriber!
Thank you Shawn, I'm super happy that you like the videos and your sub really means a lot to me! ... for sure the more you wait the more the QC is gonna become a solid option...and so far the waiting time is really long... Thank you once more!
I don't understand how the Machine learning works .. does it mean that as more people who capture their amps.. the more accurate it gets? Since it doesn't collect the proper meta data... It's a failed attempt at machine learning in my opinion...
Hi, not easy to explain...but as far as I know, it means that the profiling procedure instructs a neural network, that learns how the amp works / sounds....I don't think that the number of people who makes profile has some influence, even because every amp is different from the other... Thank you for your question!
@@LeoGibsonGtr i don't understand how it works either... but thank you. The point of machine learning is that it adapts and improves over time with access to larger datasets... so capture today won't be as good as a capture next year? My point was that since users don't require to say what amp they profiled, the settings, etc. there is no way to baseline the capture... so captures can't really be improved since there is no way to determine what the original source was...
I think people thought the computer chips shortage only affects computers but, realizing that guitar processors like this, and even cars need them makes it a little easier to understand the price increase.
I have a question you may be able to answer. I just got my Quad Cortex, and I it's the first unit like this that doesn't have a dedicated knob to cycle through presets. I would have thought that "when in preset mode", the top right knob/switch (next to the touch screen) would cycle through the presets, but it does nothing at all, or I haven't figured it out yet. The only way I can cycle patches is to change banks and push the switches. Am I missing something? Thanks!
Hi Leo, kemper stage has actually the best interface between all units available in the market at this moment, including the amazing one from the Headrush pedal board. You can use your IPAD to controll everything in the Kemper stage having different screen resolutions, screen sizes, amazing touch sensivity and wireless. Not mentioning without the need for kneeing down. So interface in the Kemper stage wins hands down in my opinion.
Hi , Leo thanks for the video i love it so much , i have one question for the studio guy for recording and re amping and for creating sound desigh what's is the best now in your opinion ?
I would say that the best units are the ones which allow the most complex effects signal chain, so I would say QC, Boss GT 1000 and Line 6 Helix. Thank you for your question!
Hi, the sound of the theme is done with a compressor, an overdrive, the amp, the cab, and then delay and chorus (chorus after the delay)...is not so complex...but the sound was pretty enjoyable in my opinion! Maybe I will try to do something else....what signal chain would like to hear? Thank you for your message and I'm happy you like the review!!
@@LeoGibsonGtr maybe can try some stereo ambient patch with diffrent combination of effect, like a Left -> boost+drive+phase+trem+2delays+shimverb+revrb Right -> octave+flanger+boost+drive+slicer+2delays+spring rev+hall rev
Good demonstration. I'm not impressed with the sound examples. The Rectifier had flabby bass, the clean funk sounded like a average souped up DI, and the lead sounded like any overgained amp sim lead.
Thank you so much!!! I'm working on something...(😊)....that requires time...I will let you know... Thank you for your feedback, your support and appreciation is really important for me!!!
@@LeoGibsonGtr awsome! iam currently waiting for my quad cortex and also cooking on my side... your way of playing and your melody really connect with me!
@@LeoGibsonGtr i just receive a notification some hours ago... its arrive and iam going to pick it up at the store when it open at 10am (its currently 2:45am... dang it feel long to wait haha)
Hi, because at the moment of this video the price of the HeadRush pedaboard was more than half less than the one of the QC. Therefore I would say that it competes more with the Boss GT 1000 or the Line 6 Helix LT. Thank you for your question!
Hi Dean, thank you for pointing it out! Let me just say that this upgrade, even if more than welcome, does not change too much the content of the video, as for instance the chorus has not been touched, and also the reverbs and delays used in the video sounds basically the same. Thank you|
@@LeoGibsonGtr there was a massive amount of bug fixes in the update and stuff to make navigating abit smoother. Only two new effects added shimmer and flanger and the ability to bypass with the expression pedal. I think their main focus atm is getting the current software bugs fully fleshed out then they are working on the pc editor porting the plugins and then hopefully they will start devoting more focus to adding new effects and models . At least this appears to be their focus atm I could be wrong we shall see
Very happy with my Quad Cortex. So easy to use and the sounds are as good or better than anything else I’ve tried. I agree with your pros and cons. Great review. Thanks.
Hi, I have not done a direct video comparison yet, so I have not the details, but I would say that the biggest differences are: the profiling procedure available in the QC, the much better screen and the 2 Mic Pre, vs the BOSS effects (that are a plus especially if you like boss effects in general) and the availability of the computer app...but as I said I would have to do a much more deep video comparison for more details. Thank you for your question.
@@LeoGibsonGtr Thank you for your answer! I was actually inspired to buy GT-1000 this spring because of your videos and i've never regretted it since! Was just curious how it compares to a more pricy unit like QC.
@@LeoGibsonGtr Your English is very good Leo! Don't worry about your accent. To me, an accent is just evidence that somebody can speak more than one language, which is something to be admired. No need to apologize for that :)
I have bought and sold every modeller ,but this is a keeper ,and here’s why . You can get very good sounds out of top of the range modellers but it usually requires lots of work dialling in the tone ,the QC just sounds so good so quickly ,less time fiddling and more time playing .
Outstanding! Great playing. Great video. Amazing use of green screen. I'm learning green screen, but I don't have if it down like you do. That was awesome!
