This video is NOT SPONSORED, and I have NO affiliate relationships with any brands mentioned. My goal is to offer you a free, unbiased informational resource to aid your understanding of supplements in the often complex and potentially misleading nutraceutical industry.
In this video, I discuss whether there is enough clinical evidence to support St Johns Wort’s effectiveness in the management of depression, anxiety, menopausal symptoms, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) (OCD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Somatoform Disorder, and Premenstrual Syndrome/Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMS/PMDD). I also talk about adverse effects and drug interactions, some of which can be life-threatening. Additionally, I’ll discuss what to look for when researching St John’s Wort brands, and I’ll provide you with a list of several high quality brands that have passed safety and quality testing. Finally, I’ll discuss my own recent experience with St John’s Wort and also discuss the brand that I personally use.

We found that St Johns Wort had a profoundly postive effect on my 86 year old father's Sundowner symptom. When we stopped giving it to him, he suddenly developed severe Sundowners. We started it again and they disappeared. We stopped once more and the Sundowners returned and cleared up when added back in. It could not have been a placebo effect because he did not know it had been removed or added.

Thank you so much for that comment! I have decided to use it for interrupted sleep. I had purchased melatonin with hops and something else at the pharmacy in Vienna, but it didn't help at all. Also I previous used it when taking tamoxifen and my radiologist thought my affect was great as opposed to others..

Thank you for the valuable video. I am taking St. John's Wort prescribed by my Naturopathic Doctor. At the beginning, she asked me to take it twice a day; however, two days later, I had the worst headache ever. So I went to the pharmacist, and she asked me to stop the medication. I felt better after... BUT I didn't give up yet. Now, instead of taking it twice a day, I take it once during the night, but not every day.

St. John's wort can also make the skin overly sensitive to sunlight. If you take St. John's wort , use sunscreen.

@Anna - what do you think about Psychedelics as a treatment for depression and anxiety etc? This seems to be the next revolution in psychiatric treatment. what are your thoughts on this? The results and trials seem to be promising.
@marybusch6182
@marybusch6182 4 месяца назад
Well let me tell you my experience with hallucinogens, and I don't like it... until the processing is formulated to be something safe, I wouldn't touch psychedelics with a 10 foot pole... I think I took LSD and saw the gable on the house across the street spinning and when I had dilaudid, I saw three of everything. I did take St Johns Wort when I was taking Tamoxifen for LCIS. Im pretty sure it was sporadic and it moves a mood disfunction from a 3 to a 2... it never made me energetic like a good cup of coffee does..

Wikipedia cites a journal article giving the IC50 of hyperforin for the GABA transporter as 184 nm, as an inhibitor, so St. John's wort apparently has equivocal effects on GABAergic transmission.

A lot of people report a positive experience after using it, but it's not for everyone. I wonder can it be combined with another herb to reduce anxiety... I heard it combines well with Valerian but I would need to research that. I ordered a 3 month supply of Natures Way (premium extract) Thank you for your review.

Hello, Doctor.. When encountering people or standing on stage, I feel anxiety, trembling, increased heart rate, excessive sweating.. When I use propanol, tremors disappear and I feel much better, but I suffer from asthma, and propanol has negatively affected the health of my lungs.. Is there an alternative treatment for beta-blockers?Is St. John's wort considered an alternative to beta-blockers if it has the same effect as beta-blockers

are you taking a therapeutic dose of Vitamin D and by that I mean enough to get your level to 75? My husband and I both take that amount and I believe it helps with the Seasonal Affective Disorder (we all know we are supposed to hibernate, but most of us dont even get enough sleep anyway)..

Unfortunately for me, I was drinking Saint johns wort in the form of tea (not in supplemental form, raw whole herb) and it gave me headaches and my eyes became very sensitive for light adding to the headaches, tho no changes in mood I also noticed the day after it would cause a teenage level increase in appetite 😅 but I haven't heard anyone else have that

Yeah I think a lack of studies does not = not effective (for things like OCD/ADHD etc) - these are disorders with quite specific neurotransmitter deficiencies/problems and we know why there are a lack of studies in this area (because the industry has monopoly on medications for these disorders). We know that Dopamine/Norepinephrine/Epinephrine issues are especially linked in ADHD along with COMT, MAO's, receptors and reuptake transporters. St Johns Wort is known to act as a reuptake inhibitor for all neurotransmitters, once you realise that, you can start to address the fundamental issues behind ADHD, for example dopamine > norepinephrine > epinephrine conversion issues. (TH > DDC > DBH > PNMT).

It grows on my farm. If I dry the aerial plant and powder it how much is a good dose for a 60 yo 250# man?
@lauramcknight2321
@lauramcknight2321 6 месяцев назад
You can't control the dose of the active ingredient of herbal medicine as different plant contain different amounts. That's why typical drugs are easier because they can control the dose.

300 mg three times per day for mild depression and five times per day for moderate depression. It is about 50% effective for moderate depression, but 50% is a lot better than zero.

You can always titrate it in tea... by that I mean in the morning before anything else, take a cup of tea with a.teeny teeny bit.... or just lick a teeny bit off a finger.. I just dont know how strong it will be... I have a kitchen scale that measures grams which is one fifth of a teaspoon, but think about it, drugs and spices are powerful, so by making tea you are making a dilution, so that would be an even smaller dose... So lets say you put a gram in a cuppa 10 ounces, then 1 oz of tea is 1/10 of that gram.... Heck, I dont think I would do it because it might be too risky. First thing I would do is purchase a supplement and try that out for impact on your body... If you have any kind of adverse reaction, then you are not going to pursue this further... Interesting thought...

I love the science of it, but I also like to think of it as liquid sunshine, as if those golden petals have somehow captured a bit of the suns essence. Its funny but the science kind of agrees with this.

i have anxiety, which is mostly financially driven, but you can take all the supplements you want in the world but it really comes down to staying busy and having a hopeful future and not a fearful future, when you start thinking about the good things to come, and eating healthy (carnivore based diet with minimal carbs) - so alot of it is mindset & diet. That has worked the best with my symptoms (gut inflamation, etc). All the gabapentin, dicyclomine, hydroxyzine, and all the other meds the doc throws at me i fully believe are destroying my brain - and i only take them when i have bad flareups and have no other option because YES they do make you feel like a Zombie.

Some brands have zero effect, others a lot more. It is pretty weak overall. I'm guessing about 50% effective for moderate depression. It's a good starting point to add 5-HTP, methylfolate, methylcobalamin, NAC, and tyrosine, etc.
