St. John's Wort has been used for centuries as a treatment for a wide variety of ailments. It's often promoted in modern times as a treatment for depression, ADHD, and many others. So, what does the research say? Is St. John's Wort likely to help any of these conditions? What are the risks of taking it?

It works really well, for people who struggle with low moods and sometimes being overly emotional. Unexplained feelings of sadness, irritability etc. I can attest that it really works well in these cases..ithink if you have been on stronger medication then it may not work.

I have extreme social anxiety. I break out in profuse sweating when anxious. Today I took 600mg of St. John's Wort and I couldn't believe how good I felt. It was like I was another person. I tried some "riskier" interactions and could feel the heat coming back though, but if I stayed cool, I could feel how "suave" my natural demeanor and behavior were. Definitely impressed with it and it came at a time in which I was considering asking for stronger stuff to manage my social anxiety. It was debilitating. Will continue taking it.

If it can dangerously raise the serotonin levels as a side effect then how can proper research possibly claim it to be identical to placebo? It's understandable to say that we don't know what exactly does it do or when it can help and whom it may help, but it's clearly not placebo the same way, say, homeopathy is
@Karreth
@Karreth Год назад
The research only seeks to establish whether it has better anti depressive effects than placebo. Obviously no-one is denying that it has a pharmological effect, but that effect might or might not include working as an anti depressant. Tylenol would (probably) also be found to not have a statistically significant anti depressive effect as compared to a placebo, but that doesn't mean Tylenol is a placebo.

The thing is, depression isn't one singular condition, and if, say, something works on 5 types of depression out of 100s, we literally won't know it due how we calculate statistical significance. We are using rigid scientific methods and apply them to vague made up categories that don't have a strict chemical and physical categorization. @@G.S.30 How to make tincture from herb capsules ?
@G.S.30
@G.S.30 3 месяца назад
@@SM-by8mg First depends on the tincture preserver you will use, acidic (vinegar), neutral (alcohol) or alkaline. Alcohol preservants are the best because they are neither acidic nor alkaline and can absorb preserve almost all herbal components from the plant. But if for any reason, one has to avoid alcohol, I personally prefer vinegar, but I recommend good quality vinegar. About herbal capsules, not tablets, after you pour the tincture's preservant, open the capsules and pour the herbal components in there. Usually the herbal capsules contain the sliced herbs within themselves. I made a tincture of St. John's wort, Valerian and Gingkgo Biloba, for depression, anxiety, PTSD and even ADHD. I used 2.5 liters of preservant, and I added 400 or 500 grams of St. John Wart's the plant itself, valerian roots itself but I used Ginkgo Biloba capsules, as you asked. First I opened the capsules carefully so the herbal content within them falls on the dish you have pour your preservant. I opened all capsules and poured the sliced herb within them straight in the preservant. They are far more easily absorbable than normal plants because they are sliced into small particles already. Then I added St John Wart's plants and Valerian roots. And then you keep minimally the tinctural mixture 2 months, in a dark, dry and normal temperature and the dish you have poured them must be hermetically sealed. I kept this tincture actually 6 months because I used to forget to filter it but it was worth it because the tincture came out fantastic, in color, in taste and in absorbtion as you can either take it sublingually, or directly swallow a spoon of it daily or dilate in water if one cannot bear the strength of the preservant. Tincture mixtures whether from herbal capsules or from plants are then carefully filtered and put into preferably dark bottles. And they can last even for years if prepared and preserved properly. If you speak about tablets, tablets are composed differently, because they have the sugar compound and main active medical ingredient in a more solid form, whereas capsules, whether herbal or medical, have just the coat where the sliced herb or drug is put within (to not harm the stomach mucosa). otherwise any capsule you just need to open it and you can will find the crushed and sliced drug or herb. From capsules the absorbtion process is much faster than with normal herbs because they are in small particles but I would suggest a 4-6 week period for them to really dilute and be absorbed. This is from my experience. I am an (allopathic) medical doctor, but I do practise naturopathic medicine as well, I always prefer integrative medical approach. Neither the big pharma monopoly, nor opposition to every drug out there which has shown to be effective and with least side effects. Of NOTE: The herbs are not SIDE EFFECTS FREE. They have lesser or no side effects than conventional pharma drugs but they still do. Like in this case St. John's wort has or valerian etc. Whoever says herbs are free from any side effect is not well versed in naturopathy even. One may not need to do medical school and get licensed to be a naturopathic physician, but certainly all serious naturapathic practitioners have a training. Well, given how much opposition medical doctors have to naturopathy, they forget a medical doctor who receives training in naturopathy, scientific naturopathic medicine, not merely popular one (which is also very good because it is based on centuries of human experience), has an advantage because he has studied all organs systems normal anatomy physiology pharmacology and diseases and therefore will understand the usage and preparation of any herbal medication more carefully. This is actually called integrative medicine which I like a lot. So I hope my advice helps you. I am not the best naturopath, but I am a bit versed in it so I am showing you the way to prepare a good quality and lasting tincture from several books and courses I took and my personal experience. I hope it helps. But I advise if you make a combo of herbs in a tincture, make sure there are no adverse chemical reaction between different plant components or between them and preservant. For depression and anxiety and ADHD I have myself suffered, I have found immense relief. Trust me doctors are in more need of treatment than patients often because our job is very demanding and mentally exhausting. We are humans too. We are humans then doctors. So I learned the need to use this knowledge I learned in medical school and naturopathy for the well being and myself as well. How will I treat my patients efficiently and make diagnosis and give the best treatment plan with with drugs or naturopathic or both if I am not well myself, both in physical and mental well being. I literally gave you an entire lecture here, but by God's will, you or anyone who reads this comment will benefit from it. If you have further questions ask me further I will not hesitate to help you in anyway I can. A good allopathic or naturopathic doctor is someone who does his job consciously to minimize the harm or adverse effects upon the patient (which cannot be avoided but be minimized to a maximum extent) and maximize to the maximum effects the benefits.

The herbal tablets works well and smooth, the herbal tincture, even if taken by mouth or dilited in water is more potent, sublingual even more so. Especially with valerian root, it has a very good effect, mild sedative dose only. Even St. John Wart's herbal tablets work well, but a tincture made directly from the herbs (I make them myself and follow strict rules for doing so) is alone considerably more effective. Sorry folks, this guy is not giving correct info concerning St. John's wort. Do more research. St. John's wort is used all over the world on a regular basis, just not in the USA. Its best to use a tea, but capsules can be effective, but takes longer to see results. Just like everything natural, it takes some time to feel a difference. If you are suffering from severe depression, you should get on meds from your doctor, they will help very quickly. But if you have mild depression, its not going to hurt to give something natural a try. Follow directions on the bottle or package, do not think taking more will be better (it won't) and allow at least 2 weeks to feel a slight difference. Many people start feeling a good bit better after a month of continual use. If after a month, nothing has changed, stop wasting your time on it. Also, if you do see a difference its important to only take the St. John's wort for 3 months, then go off and see if the depression is gone. Do not resume taking it for at least a month after stopping.

I also prepare them myself, especially tinctures. More effective and healing than standard tablets or capsules. All we need to do is study the pharmacology, drug interactions, diseases a patient might have. In herbal medicine we can study these the same way as we do in conventional studies. Don't rely on studies too much which are mostly sponsored by big pharma. Rather study the ingredients and pharmacology of each herb yourself and make your own conclusion. I am a conventional doctor and I prepare tinctures since med school till today. I prepared a combined alcoholic tincture (alcohol is best preservant nor acidic nor basic) so St John's wart and valerian roots ratio 3:1. It is alone considerably more effective than herbal tablets or capsules and one whe combined with one full spoon and one tablet per day it is very efficient. It is very very effective. and cheap. But just as we study pharmacology of drugs, the pharmacology of herbal ingridients can help us study how we can combine different herbs for maximum effeciency and less side effects. I advise to do my own research than "trials" from pharma that wants to make money. Experience is often better than research whose methodology and sponsors are doubtful. I am conventional doctor. I felt that saint Johns wart caused eye dryness and irritation. Don't take it for more than a few months, especially if experiencing symptoms.

When I took SJW it gave me intense nightmares. I was really stressed at the time in a terrible job and had just started grinding my teeth in my sleep as a result so the intense nightmares that came with SJW were really not welcome but I must admit that if I had taken when I wasn’t so critically overstretched it might have been different. When I stopped taking SJW the nightmares went but my teeth grinding stayed, it’s likely not just an anxiety thing as I have sleep apnea

It works, lve tried it but it is like a SNRI ie not only serotonin but noradrenaline uptake inhibitor. The noradrenaline part put me on edge and irritable so l stopped it.

Capsules never did anything for me either. I make tea with loose leaf. Works like magic. I can be having a mini panic attack and drink my tea and feel so much at peace instantly :)

Tea is good. Tincture is just amazing alone or with a bit of valerian roots for mild sedative effects. Two spoons per day, a bit sublingually and the rest swallow, it works much faster much better tham tablets and capsules. I prepared such tincture myself. Alone it is superb with tablets much better. I am a doctor, and I love alternative medicine too. People forget we doctors are suffering a lot too not just patiente. Don't forget just like you, we are human beings.

Make a tincture out of the herb itself is much more efficient.

It's amazing how many will say "worked for me" as proof of something. I mean, hey, it's great that it worked for you. That doesn't mean it'll work for anyone else or the general populace. And that doesn't mean it wasn't a placebo effect. But if you're just posting because you had to let us know your story, cool.

@Jason Wallwork they do think that. And you can try their methods. They may work on the most general archetypal level. But you can only really see the answers in heign sight. Look at your own life history. So many things have lead to where you are. If you were to try and picture where you are now as a destination it would be impossible. But as you look back you can identify the steps that got you here. Do you even know what the destination looks like? How do you know you aren't already there. You are always there. You can never leave it. All you can do is mistake outward things for the goal you can't ever leave. What is the difference experiencientaly from yours. How will you know when you arrive

I wish more public money was available for high quality research on stuff like this. There are so many folk remedies which might have an effect, but aren't being studied as they're unpatentable.

When there aren't billions of dollars funneled into research, people can be very slow to research when and how and why can something work. Metanalyses are fine and all, but they don't say who will benefit from it and who won't

Effexor is one of the best antidepressants out there but it will take time to taper off. If you want St John's wart, dont go for tablets and capsules, rather make a tincture from the herb itself.
