Neurotypicals Don't Understand How Annoying They Are
There are things "normal" people do that drive someone with ADHD up the wall. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may be obnoxious to the normies, but it's a two way street!

The real issue is that neurotypical people expect neurodivergent people to conform and expect us to be able to do things that we can’t. That’s what’s truly annoying.

neurotypical people can be really annoying when it comes to things that are different too (hint hint), it's strange how when one small little thing is not like the others they tend to freak out or become disturbed in some way that i'm almost convinced they're just this big hivemind looking for a future where everything is normal and samey and it's a complete and utter dystopia... or maybe that's my sometimes overactive imagination.

@dps8629
@dps8629 Год назад
Yeah, its one of the things that I had problems with. I have ADHD and while I was able to get a "probably" out of a psychiatrist my area has so little in the way of support they declined to take me to the point of diagnosis because of how little purpose it would serve. Over the course of the following years I've been able to research the condition and comfortably conclude that my experiences with school, mental health, social boundaries, delayed development of the prefrontal cortex and the benefits therein, and twenty other things has caused me to simply say that I have it. It would have been nice to have this information twenty years prior to my thirty-three year old self stumbling into the information thanks to a teacher assistant friend of mine.

I prefer to receive texts over phone calls. The phone calls are way too loud on my ear. And I have to disagree with you on self-diagnosis. It's litterally impossible and way too expensive to get an official diagnosis in my country. Vietnam's psychology support for autism is rather limited to severe cases. For high-functioning ones, there are just no diagnosis or help available.😢

Autistic girl here. Have to disagree on the diagnosis part. Many people are not actually able to get access to services that can diagnose them. Saying somebody can't be something if they're not diagnosed is quite a harmful viewpoint towards neurodivergent people.

Self diagnosis IS a thing. In fact, neurodivergent people tend to be extremely accurate when diagnosing themselves. Yes, of course there will be neurotypicals misdiagnosing themselves. (Because they don't spend hours upon hours researching a topic, before posting an opinion.) But to say self diagnosis isn't a thing, is patently absurd. Heck, when i figuted it out, I said to the doctor, this is what I have, this is why I believe I have it, and here's my research notes, correlating between the brain type and my daily actions and way of thinking. The doctor just blinked, my official diagnosis turned out to be exactly the same as what I diagnosed myself. This shows that I self diagnosed to the accuracy of a professional.

Thank you for speaking up about this. It's more often that I see ignorance or gatekeeping coming from both NTs and NDs that wanna say that self diagnosis isn't a thing. I was diagnosed with adhd, but my doctor said I might be autistic as well but he didn't recommend me getting diagnosed cause like what's the point if im on the low end. Like even if im on the low end that still counts. I can see that I have had it in my childhood. but anyways... doctors am I right.... also My mom does not validate me being Autistic. I mean she hated my adhd journey so she's definitely not on board with this. I was trying to educate her but she doesn't want to hear it. Like she sarcastically said this to me, "ugh! oh it must be your autism," Like with everything. I felt attacked with her stern voice. I need to validate for myself but its sad she won't listen. Let me put it this way: we (NT people) didn’t learn about ADHD or Autism unless we have a degree that involves these subjects. We have not met every single ND person on earth so your unique experience isn’t something we would know if we don’t actively know you. Many of us know that plenty of people have conditions that make them act differently but we don’t know every detail of these disorders that just became popular to discuss. We cannot read minds. We assume when someone says they don’t like broccoli that they mean they don’t want to eat it, but we’re free to have it on our plate when we go out to eat. We don’t expect someone we met yesterday to go in for a hug and/or try to cuddle with us because it’s not something we usually do. We don’t get close to people after a 5 minute conversation so we don’t expect someone we just met to get mad when we didn’t text them back right away due to being at work or doing something that would make answering our phone rude. We don’t mean any harm when we say ‘so what’s the appeal of fidget toys’ when we find out how much people spend on them, and not a judgement or personal attack. When we bring up articles that talk about pseudoscience cures for different diagnoses you mentioned having, we likely just want your input and aren’t implying that you should consume nothing but kale and apple cider vinegar for 3 weeks. Most of us want to be accommodating but don’t have the 8-10 years necessary to get a doctorate in psychology, while majoring in your specific diagnosis. So miscommunications happen. But if we said that people with these conditions were annoying, we would be rightfully crucified. We cannot become just like you to appease you, just like you cannot do the same to appease us. So the need placed on us to be understanding should go both ways.
@Freaky0Nina
@Freaky0Nina 10 месяцев назад
Thing is, the world is made for your needs, you get to play this life game in easy mode. So, yes. We, us folks playing in hard mode get to be annoyed at you, because we didn't choose this. No, we don't expect you to have an omniscient understanding of our brain, but please acknowledge that we live in a world that has us constantly wondering why everything is so easy for everyone else and what about us is so different, while being bullied and ostracized for the littlest quirks. So, we expect to be listened to, to be respected ans not to be "able"splained our own condition by people who have no experience in neurobiology/psychology/psychiatry. Also, that brokkoli example is weirdly specific, what is that about? 😂 did someone ditch you in a restaurant because you ordered brokkoli?
@mallowmallow2070
@mallowmallow2070 10 месяцев назад
"Most of us want to be accommodating but don’t have the 8-10 years necessary to get a doctorate in psychology, while majoring in your specific diagnosis." It doesn't take this much effort, you watching a youtube video is helping your understanding. It's as simple as phrases like 'is there something about this that you need help with?' or 'could you help me understand where you're coming from?' This is advice if you have neurodivergent people in your life, it's not as monumental of a task as you're making it out to be, just patience and asking/listening.
