I come from 4 generations of growers, master gardeners, etc. and have never put our clippers in peroxide or alcohol. My father,who was the master gardener always put Epsom salts in the holes before planting his tomatoes. I, however, did not get the growing gene, did everything I could to not get disease and got it anyway. My suggestion, no more pruning. Just remember, 100 years ago, people just put stuff in the ground, prayed for rain and it grew. I think we need to get back to all that.

Indeed! I found your channel randomly a couple years ago, honestly probably due to infertility searches, and absolutely fell in love with your channel because of your positivity! I think the bulk of your viewers are riding the roller coasters with yal, as I have definitely cried with yal as much as I have laughed! I love how great you two are at making the best of everything, and it is a real joy to watch you and your family grow (on all fronts)! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of it and for never losing sight of who you are along the way! We love you guys!!

All those tomatoes moulding on the ground will be self sowing ready for next year too ❤️ it’s all good xx

Are you sure the tomatoes are diseased and not just aging/coming to the end of the season plus having a tough season with the weather? I cannot see properly to tell, but Charles Dowding has talked about it in videos. He shows leaves that look bad but he says it's not disease. Yours may still be fine. As to the fruit trees, I select sites that I can get water too, and that is not a frost pocket that might get the blossoms caught in a late frost which would loose the crop. Cassie is super cute.

My grandpa always said farmers learn to do by doing. All of his tomatoes with blossom end rot went into the slop bucket for the pigs. But each year your garden grows and you learn more. I have learned so much from you and Philip about homesteading. Now I am done with my babies and I have grands, but my daughter may never have baby so I follow your infertility journey too.keep on teaching!

First year fruit or any trees need a lot of water to a depth of 3 to 4 feet about once a week (hopefully from rain). Fruit trees need about 8 hours of sunlight every day. Once tomatoes have blight, it usually will move through the plant, Trimming only slows it down especially if it wet or humid. Gardens have been challenging this year in many places.

I saw on tiktok today, once tomatoes start to blush they'll not grow any more so can be picked. If you turn them upside down and put them together they produce a chemical which continues to ripen them and in a few days they'll be red. Not sure if it will help but maybe something to try 😊 x

I have learned lots from your gardening expeditions and I appreciate it. I have a generous garden started this year. It's but self sustaining by any means yet but it's a start and each year you learn more and get better. I've had so much fun and gratification from my garden. I just made my first batch of spaghetti sauce out of about 18lbs of tomatoes. Hoping for another batch and that should do it for spaghetti sauce over the winter hopefully :)

Why not grow perennial flowers that you can leave or chop and drop end of season. Salvia, Rudebekia, Verbena, Echinacea purpurea (Cone Flower), Yarrow, Lupins around outside and it will bring in lots of pollinators. Also can cut and have in vase.

Cassidy was so cute helping with the garden and replant the tree. I would dig a hole and plant that apple tree deeper in the earth. I love that you are planting fruit trees! I would also suggest muscadine grapes! They grow great in the southern states. Don’t feel bad you didn’t get this huge crop. It takes time to learn these skills and some years you get a better garden crop. I would diversify. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket as they say. Still think you need a goat or donkey as cow companion. 😁

A little baby fragile thing and my German Shepard tore it to pieces leaving just a little of the root . I was so annoyed and upset !!! I am in Middle TN also and have had the same issues with my tomato plants. Right now I am trying to just save the tomatos that I have growing. I have started to pick them as soon as they start to blush and then bring them inside to ripen. They aren't the prettiest tomatos but they will make great sauce. You are doing an awesome job with your garden. The ground cherries don't even make inside at my house. 😁

Interesting. I never knew there was such a thing as "ground cherries". Interesting. My neighbors and I also had no crops because we had no bees. We had to try and hand pollinate, but I read that bees don't just simply pollinate. They bring with them the energy from other plants so it makes the produce healthy and strong and nutritious to eat. My hand-pollinated zucchini was very hard even though it looked fine and full grown on the outside.
@MagicalSoulMindStorm
@MagicalSoulMindStorm 2 года назад
That’s a good point. Starting a honeybee hive might help vegetables taste better if you don’t see many bees around, but I wouldn’t want lots of bees either. Maybe far off in the corner of your property, away from the animals.

Ok good tip! When your tomato crop fails see if you can find a farmer’s market with Someone who does bulk sales of canning tomatoes. If you can’t find that then try using the bulk cans #10 cans of tomato products for canning your sauce’s for your family. As an example: spaghetti sauce, marinara, pizza sauce, or anything else! Still cheaper to buy and can than you can buy in the long run and better control of what your family eats. Especially if you have a bulk foods or restaurant supply around you. Or if you have a discount store around you like Amy Maryon uses! We don’t have anything like that close to use.

Phil, you’re right. It’s so therapeutic watching animals eat.☺️. Wet your Apple tree, leaves and all, and then sprinkle sevin dust on the leaves and base.Bugs were eating my apple and peach trees and that is what I did, plus watering and fertilizing it, but you have to keep on it as bugs are 10 times worse in the country. .How to Defeat Tomato BlightToo dry weather or to much water..Copper spray helps a lot. I've tried it, and my friends did as well. However, dont wait until the disease occurs. Spray when seedlings are around 6 inches tall (before planting), then a couple of times every 2-3 weeks (not earlier, as it will damage the plant). IT'S IMPORTANT YOU SPRAY EITHER EARLY MORNING OR LATE EVENING, SO IT DOESNT KILL THE BEES (if the spray it wet on the plant, the bees will carry it to their hive and kill other bees or the queen, which eventually weakens the colony, and if no queen, kills the hive). Ideally, its also good that it rains 3 days after the spray. The fruits can be eaten a few days after the spray.

Gardening is a constant learning activity and depending on something bigger than yourself for proper weather conditions. Just like farmers do all the time. You learned and you grew and you moved on. You’ve come so far. Yes, it’s ok to be upset for a bit. Write it all down in your garden journal and some day when you’re in your 90s you’ll look back on it as a fond memory.

Smiley farm in ridgetop does all natural growing. We get our produce from them every summer.

I live in Connecticut and my garden did not do well this year either. The drought has not helped. We are on a well system and had to cut back on watering. My tomatoes did well but the squirrels got to them before me. Very frustrating. Praying next year will be better. Love the way Cassidy is talking. So cute.

Alex, some of the issue with the tomatoes is sun scald not disease. They should come back if you cover them with white garden fabric/shade netting during the hottest parts of the day. The issue with the fruit tree and the chickens is they are probably after grubs in the soil. You can take a tomato cage from Lowes or Tractor Supply and snip it down the side, wrap it around the tree larger side down, use some landscape staples to hold it down to the ground and zip tie the side where you snipped it apart, and then wrap the same white garden fabric around it to keep the chickens out. You can even connect two of them together if you want a larger circle around the tree.

We put a little fence around our fruit trees to keep the animals away. We also water them a lot. We are in Canada and not the coast and we got lots of fruit this year.

I can't believe how big cassidy is getting and omg so cute when she speaks so adorable 😍 you guys are doing fantastic with your farming. All good farmers go through the loss and that leads to a learning process so you can do better next time. And what works for someone else may not work for you. Remember your soil water and environment is all different even down to your neighbours.

2:10 seeding in the fall has worked better for me than in the spring, because the little seedlings don't get scorched

Chicken wire circle around the trees will keep the chickens from scratching the roots up.

Get some watering bags for the base of your trees to help water them and protect the base from digging animals. You should put a protective sleeve around the bark of the tree to save them from deer rubbing against it, rubbing off the protective bark. A lot of places have fruit trees on sale right now, to clear them out. Most have a 1-year warranty. Save your receipt, in case it does, to get a replacement tree.

I follow a page on Instagram where they have these bags that catch Japanese beetles to leave their plants alone. They have about 5 of them, per area, and they just empty them out and give them to their chicken to eat after crushing them a little so they don’t fly out. Maybe that can work for you guys
