Never Again! Stain & Polyurethane "One Step" Finish. Not User Friendly!

I had a terrible experience using this "one step" stain and varnish polyurethane product while refinishing this solid wood kitchen table. I almost threw the entire project away but I managed to save it. Don't get me wrong, this brand makes very good products but from my experience, this two in one, "easy one step" product was not easy to use and I will not be using this type of stain/varnish combo again.

I just completed the restoration of an old children's rocker and the client brought me a poly and stain mix. Yeah, it was a nightmare. I actually sanded it all backdown and presented it to the client with just a coat of poly as it was American Chestnut and was beautiful as it was. They loved it. I'll never use that stuff again.

Yeah it's pretty bad stuff. The traditional way is far superior. Makes me wonder why this product even exists. I would imagine they receive a lot of complaints from customers.

oh my god - i wish i had seen this video before i nearly lost my mind making a bad situation worse and worse with every attempt to use this product!! i commend you on your perseverance my piece still looks like . . . and i may be giving up entirely cant afford another can of this junk unbelievably hideous results and i'm sick of sanding back down to no avail thank you so much for posting i Hate the way my work looks after coat three at least i dont feel like an incompetent perfectionist any more

Wish I would have watched this before trying a poly-stain blend on the 100 year old door I spent weeks stripping 😢. Stripping again.

Ive mixed my own (both oil-based) and applied with all paints brushes and turned out nicely. Ive been painting and doing cabinets for 33 years.

I dont use the quick drying poly (no way). Since your table was sanded down to raw wood you definitely needed to stain separately...wait 5he alott3d time and 2 coats of poly (I like satin exterior) and sand between coats

😂 the beeps was me last night! 😫 but used the behr brand stain and polly! After my first coat I was so frustrated! Round coffee table with wood grains going in different directions. I had to resand it all off to try again and again, horrible mess. I thought it must be my sponge.. second time, I thought it must be my rag... after completely sanding a second time, I used cheese cloth and made a game plan to go super fast! 😂 because it does become so sticky! After 4 coats, it's finally done! Your table turned out great!

I feel your pain! Terrible. I feel bad for all the beginners out there who decide to try refinishing something for the first time and get stuck using a product like this. Would be very discouraging!

I'm having the same problem with Behr, but it's worse on a yardstick I'm making weaving shuttles out of. It looks better on some 1x3s I'm using for a different project, which makes me think some types of wood do better with it than others. I think I can use it for the 1x3s but I'm giving up on the shuttles and will probably just paint over the stain.

I have used the water based poly-stain on old finished baseboards right after a light sanding and it worked out well. Its definitely a different animal than oil based stain with poly in it. It applies very thin has longer working time and your brushing technique has to be careful.

I will never use this stuff again either!!! The worst! Seems to me I used the minwax brand before and had wonderful success. Perhaps it was water based, but this varathane brand is horrible

Did a test door on cupboards with the behr version. I had to wipe the first coat because I panicked. Did 4 really thin coats and it actually looks good, but it's a no for me. Too risky, and im not convinced I can get all the doors to look good and consitant in color. and ya..it's like mud to work with. Dries waaay to fast

It did turn out really nice. I wouldn’t call it beautiful……but definitely nice. When you find stuff like that it’s probably not worth the labor……..if you’re looking to sell it. In situations like that…..it’s palm sand……tinted pourable epoxy……wax……sell.

I made the mistake of finishing a 12 inch diameter pine stool seat with the water based one step Varathane. Never again! With that stuff, you have no wet edge, even on a tiny project like that, it's quite viscous, and it doesn't flow out at all, so brush marks are permanent. I shoulda known better. There are no shortcuts to a decent stain and varnish job.

I agree 100%. I'de like to see the manufacturer of this product try to use it. Maybe there's something they know that we don't? lol. Either way, it shouldn't be this difficult for the average person to use.

Brushing anything on is going to look terrible 😂😂 thats why you use a foam applicator to be able to get more coverage in less time..

Does that actually work? I haven't tried a foam brush with this product. If you say it makes a huge difference then I might actually try it out again. Thanks

@@savvybuilds no not the foam brush.. it's called a "foam applicator," which is basically like a foam pad with a short handle meant to be held in the palm.. it measures like 2x4 so you have much more coverage.. if you think about it a foam brush might cover maybe 3/4"X3" at most which is why alot of people say it dries too fast.. it's not that it dries fast, it's that you arent getting enough coverage in time.. its kind of like using a toothbrush instead of a broom 😂 they key to use the applicator is to take it easy and not press down too much just let is glide over.. once you feel it isn't gliding then dip again into the polystain.. I usually get a small tray which measures like 5"x5"x1" tall and put my polystain in there and then dip my applicator.. the trick is to not dip the applicator too deep into the polystain because it will soak in too much product and cause things to get too wet which will give you the urge to try and fix it but will end up ruining it.. just barely let applicator touch the surface of the poly.. also read the instructions on your product because most gels require wiping off excess but polystain usually isn't wiped off..

@@savvybuilds if you can't find a foam applicator wherever you are located try getting the 3 or 4" wide foam rollers.. I usually buy everything I use from Home Depot.. the whole point is to get something with good coverage but doesn't leave brush strokes..
