A guy blocked a fire hydrant in my rural town. Fire truck ran out of water and his huge truck was in the way of the hydrant. Nearest other truck was 45 minutes away. - like I said, rural. The house burned down. The owners took him to state court.

Why are BMW drivers always blocking hydrants.

My brother-in-law rose through the ranks from firefighter first-class to the Hazardous Materials Fire Chief in Baltimore City, Maryland. These incidents happen far more often than you'd think. By the time a fire engine arrives on scene, carrying only 500 gallons of water in its on board tank, usually minutes have passed from when an incident has started and 911 has received the first call. They then relay the call to the closest firehouse. Due to cities diminishing revenues and increasing social services spending, since the 1980's they have been closing many firehouses, placing more distance between homes and first responders, including paramedic ambulances. Once on site, fire engines will have laid hose in the process of driving up to an involved structure as they know exactly where the hydrants are in their district. My brother-in-law would tell me about instances of blocked hydrants or double parkers blocking a road. When it's been a few minutes at best since 911 received the call and the firefighters turned out, they have no time to waste as literally seconds determine whether or not a person dies of smoke inhalation, a structure is fully involved or if the whole block (ie. Homes on both sides) will be involved. Especially a greater problem in adverse weather or rush hour. He would always command his officers to roll up to a double parked car and to use the engine to push a blocking car down the street as far as necessary or smash out windows as depicted here to attach the laid hose. They have no time to "winch" an offending car out of the way or to take other measures that aren't necessary to do their jobs. Literally seconds count in these situations of life or death. What is a usually ten to twenty thousand dollar car worth compared to a human life and/or multiple dwellings. Over the years in Baltimore it was not uncommon for a whole street of rowhomes to burn down and for any vehicles in front of them to be roasted to carcasses. Speaking for my brother-in-law's experiences, my witnessing them when I'd hang out with his squad at their house or riding along I can tell you part of the firefighters job in these large east coast urban cities is saving all too many idiot citizens from their own stupidity. It's a sad case where all too often Murphy's Law comes into play.

At the end of last year we lost a house and 4 lives, all because someone parked over the hydrant (ours are below ground with a cap, very clearly marked). We had to drive 4 minutes to get water, which meant we had almost no chance. I've also smashed a window to release the handbrake and push a car out the way, the owner of which apologized and then donated clothes and furniture (new) to the family

In my city, Edmonton fire department has a history of slowly ramming vehicles blocking a fire hydrant. Any other nearby vehicles caught up in the ramming of the offending car gets the offending drivers licence plate number for insurance claiming. If you park in front of a fire hydrant you may end up paying to replace someone else car damage even though your car was rammed by a fire truck. The $300 fine is the least of your worries if you park by a fire hydrant.

In Toronto Canada its a $350 dollar ticket and immediate tow. They also pay for the tow and impound.

I Cali our curbs are marked Red = no parking except emergency vehicles Green = loading and unloading usually mail trucks Yellow = pick up and drop off usually at schools,churches,ext Blue = handicap parking only And fine for violating the markings range from $250-$1000 and your car towed

If you block a hydrant and we roll up to the scene and see your car blocking a hydrant with a working structure fire with flames visible we will do this no questions asked. If you like your windows. We need a water source and a hydrant is a LOT easier than dispatching tanker trucks to give us enough water to fight the fire... So just do us a favor and don't block it.

I remember one time going to a house party and the only open parking spot within walking distance to the house was by a fire hydrant. I wanted to park there so bad but didnt. Ended up parking way down the street but it was worth it cuz I didn’t have to worry about something like this happening at least.
