True story. I bought a 1992 Cadillac Seville 2500km from my home. Never herd it running and never had it checked out. Took the people at their word that it was road worthy. I got a flight to pick up the car and drove it home from Ontario to Nova Scotia in the middle of a snow storm. The old Caddy worked like a top and still does. This was 4 years ago.

Left bearings usually go 1st because the radius of a right turn is smaller putting more side load to left bearings.
@ericl2969
@ericl2969 2 года назад
Ignoring the fact that mechanically-aware drivers drive will choose to go more slowly during sharper turns, thus avoiding a difference between the lateral forces for left and right turns, there's something else to think about. I'm not sure about this particular axle, but most modern, light-duty, live rear axles use wheel bearings that don't carry lateral forces. In such axles, the side-loading of cornering is transferred via the axle shaft to the tapered roller bearings of the differential carrier, and those bearings are extremely well suited for side loading so they wouldn't normally fail due to cornering forces (and the wheel bearings certainly won't fail for that reason since they don't carry side loads at all). For rear driving axles which don't have that kind of wheel bearing, the wheel bearing is a tapered roller bearing, so again, side loading is not an issue (the explanation for how side loads are transferred to from one side of the car to the other for the different bearing styles (except on heavy-duty axles in which the wheel bearings are paired) gets a little complicated to explain, but that's less important than noting that tapered roller bearings are great for side loading). It's those modern compact, all-in-one hub bearings (which usually have ball bearings running in a groove), that are NOT well suited for the stresses of cornering.

If the only thing wrong with a used Jeep that wasn't properly inspected before buying is a bad wheel bearing, I'd say the owner got pretty lucky.

7:40, air conditioning. At work the management decided to disconnect the air conditioning in all of the service trucks out on the line because they didn't want anyone sitting in air conditioning when they should be working. But, you know, you go along and do what you are told. SO, along comes the RAINY SEASON and none of the trucks can move because the defrost would no longer clear the windshields and the mechanics could NOT see out of the trucks to drive safely. SO, the air-conditioning got hooked back up in all the truck fleet. Tremendous, unnecessary expense so some jughead could have his way. This is a TRUE STORY.

Other American car brands stopped making simple, practical, and capable 4x4s for the same reasons that Chrysler did. There are still people like us who would buy a vehicle like this, but not enough to make it worth it to the manufacturer. Sad days.

Are you going soft in the head? Those axle bearings are lubricated by the same gear lube that’s in the differential. The seal is there to keep the gear oil in the axle housing and off the brakes! Not sure what crockpot thinks those bearings use grease and not the same gear oil that’s in the differential, it’s pretty obvious how it all works. Also it’s obvious the diff cap is the stock stamped steel cap that someone spray painted, it’s definitely not aluminum.

If you can't tow or ship a vehicle (too expensive) at least have someone else come with you with another vehicle to follow you back in case you have problems. That might be a slightly cheaper option than towing or shipping (unless you have a car hauler trailer or can rent/buy one). When I've bought used cars, I've always had someone come with me (give me a ride) and then we drove back home together in case something went wrong, but never had an issue. But having someone give you a ride to the place where you're picking up the car and following you back is cheap and easy.

Hmmmm . . . I thought the rear bearings on a that Jeep would have been lubricated by the grease from the differential -- at least that's the way it is on my old Dodge Dakotas. So the moment I saw that someone had replaced the differential cover, I figured they ran it out of gear lube somehow. That's because the only time I ever had to replace the wheel bearings was when my light duty diff went out and I replaced it with a heavier unit. (Insert joke about Chrysler quality here.) The replacement unit had a pile of miles and I eventually had to replace the bearings. (See Scotty's video about mileage claims on used auto parts.)

PS: I've owned seven of the 90s and 2Ks Dakotas, that was the only diff I ever had an issue with . . . come to think of it however, it was the only one with the light duty diff. They were made a lot better back then. These days, I would never buy a Fiat Chrysler vehicle.

Its truly funny how folks believe that removing the thermostat from an engine helps with anything, except for a temporary fix for a stuck and closed one. If an engine is running hot and the thermostat works, its something else. Thankfully in Chicago they put 2” of salt for every 1” of snow, so I don’t need chains for my tires

Scotty kilmer, help me! Just bought a Toyota on June 2021 with 9 miles on and 17,000 later, front tires are gone bald. All services been done by the dealership. I still can’t figure it out as too why… I been 7 month with the car and stealership dont want to hear about it, what should i do? They say there’s nothing they can do. Who can i talk to. And Just today my battery is bad had to get jumpstart twice. Should there be dealer warranty, i had the car for 7 months. Regardless of outcome u best Scotty!!! Generationally knowledge for years to come.

We just bought a 1995 Chevy Beauville van and had the transmission rebuilt. Anything else we should look into to keep it running? It has 225K miles on it. It is such a cool van. We also bought a 2010 Ford Expedition XL w/ 209k miles on it and a 2010 VW CC (I had a new timing chain installed because it has 124K miles on it.) We love all three of these vehicles which we use and need for different reasons.

Hi Scotty...I recently bought a car in Florida. 94 Camry..absolutely Rust Free..it's as clean as any 94. I live in the Midwest. I have no intentions of driving it in the snow and salt..I have a 92 Camry for that...😆 Are there anything I should watch for? It's parked in an unheated garage and so far none of the interior parts have cracked or split...thank you

Maybe a war surplus old Willys would be a good Jeep, albeit a gas guzzler.
