I know a guy that bought a 1989 Silverado new and used it for daily ride to work. He lived 3 miles to work so he got less than 10 years on the motor before it started burning oil and smoking. He had like 120000 miles on it.

I just bought a 2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE in NJ(literally 7 miles on it when I started it). I live an hour away from the dealership where I bought it from. I followed by girlfriend home on the NJ Turnpike driving at normal speeds 65ish mph. When we transitioned to the Garden State Parkway I was following behind my girlfriend at about 70mph, but then I passed her and accelerated the car up to 90mph for about 1.5ish miles or so😵‍💫 The next night I turn on RU-vid on my cellphone for the first time since buying my new car, and this Scotty Kilmer video about "What not to do in a new car" popped up in my reccomend section. So I clicked on it and you say not to accelerate hard or drive a new car at high speed😐 Well my car new has about 90 miles on it now, and going forward I'm now continuously watching the tachometer to make sure I don't get the car above 3,500 RPM. This is my first brand new car and I didn't know that cars actually have a break in period, and absolutely no one at the Toyota dealership told me about a break in period or to keep the car below a certain MPH or RPM🤨 Hopefully my 1-2 miles of 90mph driving on the Garden State Parkway didn't negatively affect my new Corolla Hatchback XSE in the long run🙏 Scotty what are your thoughts on this?

Scotty, I'm a lot guy at a dealership, and unfortunately, most of the staff at the dealerships I've worked at, have no idea how to care for their vehicles, and floor the cars as soon as they are started in negative temps to warm them up faster. Cars are also left running for hours on end. Can't speak for all dealerships, but I've seen it at a few.

bought a brand new 1984 nissan pickup, 4 wheel drive. at the 1,500 mile check the oil was changed. i drove it from the dealer to where my dad lived just about 2.5 to 3 miles away. my older brother took me to pick it up and was following me to my father's residence. when i stopped to park my brother said i was leaking fluid. turned out to be engine oil. i followed the trail back and picked up the drain plug. luckily it came out when i was only driving a short distance and only at about 15 mph at the time when it fell out. the dealer apologized and gave me my money back for what i was charged. come to think of it, i don't think i was reimbursed for the oil i had to put in...can't remember.

With Rotary engines cars such as my 86' FC RX7 I read that every time you start it you have to let it get to operating temps. If you don't it will stay in cold start and will flood the engine which will make your next start-up a PITA! I'm not sure if the RX8 had the same issue.
@GoonSquadLifeMember
@GoonSquadLifeMember 5 лет назад
It's the same in the RX8, still a rotary. I'm acquainted with someone who got an RX8 dirt cheap at auction, b/c it wouldn't start (it did run for a few seconds as a demo). He paid for the car (3-4K), let it sit for 15 minutes until the combustion chambers cleared, and started it right up again (***Scotty laughing***).

Spot detailer spray (Like that Meguiar's wax + cleaner) is better for bird crap though (at least if you catch it on there nearly fresh), that Goo-gone stuff can strip wax. Save it for the tar or bugs. Just been my experience, since my car has been pretty much outdoor parked for the entire time.

I saw a test where they compared breaking in a street bike by babying it, to winding it to the moon from day 1. They found that redlining the bike from day 1 made it slightly more powerful, presumably because at high rpm the rods stretch slightly and if you don't rev it high enough during break in, that portion of the cylinder goes untouched.

Wait a minute you think cruise control makes your engine stay at one rpm rate? When using cruise control, you go up hills and down them too, wind blows and changes. It uses a PID control or something of the like and the engine gos up and down.

regarding varied speed during break-in... I am no mechanic, I don't understand this at all... whether you at at 3000 rpm or 6000 rpm or at a steady 4500 rpm, the piston travel is still the same, just faster or slower, so what's the difference?
@rays7437
@rays7437 5 лет назад
Because of the wear pattern. He explained it. The RPM' s do make a difference. The piston travel distance is the same, yes, but the pistons don't travel straight up and down. There are centrifugal forces acting on the piston. There is a small amount of side to side movement. During the first 500 to 1000 miles the parts are "wearing in." After that, the wear is minimal. The manufacturers do run in the engines at the factory to a certain degree, but even the car's owner's manual says to vary the speeds

That's the first thing I do if I buy a car is check the no manual to see what the recommended octane rating it recommends so I get the best performance and milage. Tips for buying a car buy a Bluetooth OBII scanner and buy the torque pro app that way you can see if there's any issues with the car, take a tire tread depth gauge to make sure the tires are safe. Last thing you wanna do is have to buy new tires after buying a car. If they look low ask the dealership to install them. Lastly take the car to a mechanic you trust and get an inspection done same with Carfax.

I’ll always buy used. New cars are way over priced and after all. It’s just 4 wheels. Doesn’t matter how you get there, as long as you arrive safely. Only reason I could think of spending more on a vehicle is crash test safety reasoning. Other than that, nothing more. Get a car that suits you and your family’s needs. Don’t fall victim to the financial burden of thinking you need a $400+ dollar car payment for status

@77MrAH Driving off immediately is fine, even good. Idling to warm the engine gives you a hot engine and a cold transmission/differential. Driving to warm the engine gets everything warmed up at a similar rate and therefore the temperature gauge is actually useful. *However*, you should drive *gently*. Take it easy until the temp gauge has been in the operating range for a little while. How long depends on conditions: my old Civic is full-hot after a mile or so on a summer day, but on a winter night it can be as much as 20 miles.

I used to think like that. I bought a 2017 Yaris 6 speed for the fact that some mongoloid hasn’t owned it before me. I followed the break in period and do all the maintenance myself. My company truck for has been abused by the guys before me. No way I’d go for that with my daily driver.
