time well spent, lance--good choice! heck, you can get two reliable used cars for far less than a brand new car.
@BWater-yq3jx
@BWater-yq3jx 4 года назад
Does depend on the car though. He mentioned a $35,000 car - you can get a new Corolla for half that. I've done the sums on this - a good quality entry-level brand new car can cost you a similar amount to buying a 10 -15 year old car and doing ongoing repairs. Provided you keep it for about 7 - 10 years. Bear in mind that Scotty's a mechanic - so of course 2nd hand works out well for him, cos he's saving on repair costs.
@toddinthemiddle
@toddinthemiddle 4 года назад
@@BWater-yq3jx considering finance cost, increased insurance and registration, that $35k is just a starting figure. who knows lance's financial situation, so it's hard to just give blanket advice. doesn't appear that he is wealthy, so... speaking for myself, i would never finance $35k on a car. but that's just me.

When my wife and I were young and didn't know better, we went into a Toyota stealership to get her a new last-year model corolla. It was 16k out the door. They had the 0% financing for 5 years deal going on... but to get the 0% financing, the sticker price would have gone up $1000. I did some calculating and it was a much better deal to just do a non-0% financing and pay off the car within two or three years. The interest would have only costed about $200-$400 (I forgot how much). So that's what we did, and that's when I realized why the 0% deals were always scams.

Mistake people make is they go into the dealership with monthly payments in mind instead of looking at the actual total cost of the car. Always look at that over the monthly payments. This is how they get you, then they creep the monthly payments up over your budget with the comment "Hey it's only the cost of your morning coffee".

Buy a car before your current car needs to be replaced. If you wait to buy until you need a car then the pressure of needing transportation will make you desperate. And desperation leads to bad choices. If your car is going to need replacing in 2020 then plan on shopping and buying in 2019.

I remember car shopping when I first turned 18. I had like $2500 cash. I wanted a truck. I was searching for like a month for a cash car and didn't find anything decent. So I went to a dealership and put $800 down on a 2003 Ford F-150 and drove away. I was naive, the truck was a piece of junk. The starter went bad, the battery needed replacing, tires would need replacing soon, it would run hot at high speeds, the aftermarket radio was trash, and they took out the door speakers from the driver and passenger side doors. Ended up sending the truck back to the dealer within 8 months. Don't get impatient when car shopping and always do a thorough inspect of the car your purchasing.

I mostly agree with you on the extended warranty as for the other stuff, your spot on. I purchased a brand new F-150 Lariat with the 5.0 V8 in 2015, I purchased the extended Ford warranty because I planned to keep it past the base warranty. I knew that if anything broke on the truck it would be expensive to replace, here is what happened. At 45K 10K after base warranty the passenger mirror died, the auto-fold computerize collision avoidance wizbang mirror. Replacement cost $1400. at 52K the Vista roof stop working and would not completely open or close, $2800 track system replaced. At 56K, 2 days ago the driver side mirror died (same problem) $1400; total outlay $5200 less $100 deductible per claim. Normally I would never purchase such a thing but I knew in my gut that when this truck broke it would be costly. P.s. Love your channel, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year..

If you decide to buy a new car here is the best advice. When you arrive at the dealership there will be a smiling car salesman. After you greet, tell him you will be asking questions but, you will NOT answer any of his questions. Always do this. I remember going to a car dealer to buy. The salesman got extremely p***sd because I would not answer questions and the salesman walked out of that little booth office in an angry huff. I had to get another salesman to finish the deal. The second salesman knew better than to ask questions and got the sale. The main question they ask is "How much do you want to spend?" Never, I repeat NEVER answer this question. As mentioned don't answer any questions. It is interesting and maybe even fun to watch car salesman get angry and frustrated because they can't size you up with probing questions that are not in your best interest to answer. Remember, this is your money and your rules. Don't answer their questions. Also, as Scotty mentioned that extended warranty is a total scam. It is even worse. I have read the dealership and salesmen pocket the money you paid for it and never contact the insurance outfit to register the policy.

Yea, I got to a Hyundai dealership in CoS because of the incentive of a gift card ($50). He tried to sell me this Tucson. I told him how much I would pay for it. He got pissed that I wouldn't yield. Then he let me test drive other cars and tried to sell those to me. I said no. He got pretty irritated to borderline losing his professionalism. Then another salesman took over. Pretty much that insinuated that I couldn't afford to buy a car. I went to another dealership and got an Infiniti Q50. I drove to the Hyundai dealership and politely told them to f^^^ off.

If you get a lower price deal from a dealer for using their financing make sure there Isn't a PREPAYMENT PENALTY. That is, if you pay it off early, they charge you a chunk of money. If there isn't a booby trap like that, go ahead and make your deal. IMMEDIATELY after closing the deal, drive right down to your CREDIT UNION (NOT bank), borrow the money and pay the loan off. Of course you have to get the loan pre-approved by your credit union.

@@liberals_destroy_everythin2497 I think there was a class action lawsuit or something. It was in regards to a certain model or certain year when the motor's were offered. It doesn't mean all Toyota's have this issue. To your other point, all electric cars are changing so fast and they aren't capable of what gas vehicles offer (yet) so I don't see that as very viable. They destroy the environment just as much as a gas car, and they don't do well on resell because the battery replacement can equal the cost of a used vehicle in one service. rminitials buy here pay here lots, don't give you a chance, the moment you miss a payment is the moment they would pick up the car. They also don't count towards your credit even if you paid on time and paid it off. It's better going to a big dealership, but with financing from a credit union. So go to a credit union first, figure out what you can afford than start looking for cars and make sure to state that you have financing already when you step at the dealership.

Scotty, you really do what you advise. Thank you for your advise on all your videos. You give us consumers a real fighback against all the fake things the dealers tells us. I wanna say something about the Toyota Camry Hybrid 2015. I’ve been using it for 3.5 years now. It’s the best ever car I’ve ever owned. Where can you find another brand where “it has the most horsepower , but still consumes the least petrol” in its class. Not only that, in Malaysia, there was green tax inventive by the government, and so, a total of nearly 18% of the car price was saved. 18% , man. And it’s so reliable, no small, no tiny , no big problem after 3.5 years. Only one drawback. The GPS navigation system is hopeless . It’s a damn good car. Changing the battery after 8 years, if I have to change it, is just 4% of the car price. And by that time, all the savings I’ve gotten throughout that 8 years is more than enough to pay for a new battery for this Hybrid powerful, comfortable and RELIABLE super car. Please do a video on this super car.

Great point about warranties. I fell for it once when I bought a Volvo. I thought it would save money if anything went wrong. They didn’t pay when I needed a new regulator for the drivers window. “Called it normal wear and tear.” Those companies are just stealing from people. Just save a bit of money in a separate account every month or year and have your own warranty if you need it.

I knew an old lady who had over two million dollars in a bank. She was upset that the young bank employees took her for granted. She was going to remove all her money from that bank until my friend, a professional fiduciary, intervened on her behalf. He asked the old lady what she wanted. All she wanted was a toaster. In the old days, as Scotty mentions, you would get some kind of "gift" if you had accounts at a bank.. The young manager refused to give her a toaster because he did not understand. The bank almost lost over $2,000,000 in depostis in 1980 USD money. A toaster cost $10.00. The manager's boss bought the lady a toaster & plus new TV to boot.. The point here is the customer is always right, and the cost of a few "gifts" are outweighed by the money you make on the other end. Don't throw the old lady out with the bathwater.

How was the money being held at the bank? The management might have been eager to conceal fiduciary legal liability!!! If she has children or other heirs, you might want to mention this to them and they might then want to talk with their lawyer or forensic accountant. They might walk away with a LOT of the bank's money...and the damn toaster.

@@stinkycheese804 Look at it from the banker's perspective: They wanted to keep her money to lend it to others for the very highest interest rates they could possibly squeeze out of them while paying the owner of the money as little as possible for the privilege. In fact, if the owner were old and vulnerable, perhaps they could get away with paying her even less...maybe even charging HER for the privilege of letting the bank slowly deplete her assets. Happens all the time. Someone has to pay the multimillion $$$ salaries and bonuses of the bankers who rob us.

Valueable advice. I was considering an AWD vehicle but will cross it off the list since there is no need.
