You made a really good point about the "OEM" parts vs. original manufacturers. You should've pointed out that a lot of batteries are infact literally the same as others at almost every place they sell one. I discovered years ago East Penn Manufacturing aka Penn-Deka makes batteries for most national retailers. Once you figure out the numbers you'll find them anywhere you want to buy one with a different brand label. I discovered there was a manufacturing plant near by and I could buy them straight out of the front office for nearly half the price of a retailer.

Just to show you that some parts can be cheap parts, I once owned a 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe. The water pump weep hole started pouring out water when I was coming home from a trip. I made it home after getting some antifreeze and water and pouring it in every so often in the next day went to a local parts store that was the only one open on Sunday and bought a rebuilt water pump. I installed it and refilled the system with antifreeze and water and immediately the pump started pouring out fluid out of the weep hole. I took it off losing most of my antifreeze in the process and got them to give me another one and went to the same process and then the same thing happened with that one. I took it back and got a third one and put it on and the same thing happened again. I returned it and got my money back and the next day went and got one elsewhere and didn't have any problems. It was obvious to me that what was probably done was the seal was either left out when they rebuilt it or they didn't replace it and all they did was clean it and repaint it. It probably came from China and I lost a lot of money and antifreeze because I didn't have a catch pan at the time but these people were selling junk. They didn't even sound like it was a big deal when I took them back and they had a big box of what appeared to be brand new so-called rebuilt parts in a return box going back to their supplier so it showed me that place was getting junk. I had to replace the fuel pump another time and bought one from Western Auto Automotive parts and shortly afterward the car would cut out and I had it towed into the shop and they could not find out what was wrong because a few minutes after they got it they cranked it up and it ran perfect. This happened two other times costing me time and money. I decided it had to be the fuel pump even though the mechanic said it checked out fine. After three times being towed I had enough especially when the first time was on a trip on a weekend. It cranked up about an hour later and ran fine the rest of the trip but I was towed in to Montgomery Alabama where it was checked out and found to be fine at that point. I told the shop that was checking it out the last time to get a GM pump even though they said there was nothing wrong with the one I had in there. After they replaced it I never had any more trouble so I agree on certain things you definitely should go with the OEM part.

As the owner of an '87 BMW, I have to agree. A lot of aftermarket parts for it are actually better than the originals. I installed aftermarket ball joints and control arms that are far better and cheaper than OEM, for example. And in some cases OEM parts are no longer manufactured. I agree with buying OEM in general, but on my 32-year-old German car, there are a lot of exceptions.

I have a friend working for a tool and jig manufacturer in China. She said China makes parts for most car manufacturers in the world. Some GM models has the whole engine make in China. I bought wheel bearings, washer pumps and controller for my Lexus, even turbo chargers for my Mazda with no problem. Chinese products are not the same as even 10 years ago. They just landed a Rover on the far side of the moon last week. They can do things properly if they want to provided the price is right. It seems China bashing is a patriotic thing to do these days. I won’t argue with my wallet if I can pay $19 for a Controller on eBay instead of $145 at the dealer.

Right. You can go to Lowes and buy some aluminum pipe clamps and bolts, but they will corrode and shear off from road vibration and weather. There is a reason why pipe clamps and bolts for cars are at an auto store and cost more, they are properly conditioned and treated for auto use. It's stupid how stupid people get trying to save money when they get to the point where they don't even know what they are talking about anymore. It's like saying bicycle brake cables and car brake cables are the same thing and get bicycle cables for cheaper.
@desertbrewcrew1974
@desertbrewcrew1974 5 лет назад
MrWolfSnack I will go one step further. Dont go to an parts store to get headbolts or push pins for fenderskirts. Those are OEM parts. Most people who watch this channel are smart enough to know the difference between grades of hardware. Theres definately a time and place for OEM hardware ONLY. But replacing a couple of bolts on a no stress area like an oil pan or even a waterpump since its mostly silicone and o-ring anyway isnt going to harm anything. Anyone stupid enough to mess with their brake system by deliberately sabotaging it by going cheap deserves to crash. Ive never had problems and neither has anyone of my hundreds of customers after 31 years have by me using this practice. Perhaps commenting on politcal channels would be more appropriate for your liking since you assume people are less inteligent than you.

One interesting thing most customers don't realize is most major auto parts stores actually use the same catalog. It occasionally happens that the catalog is wrong, and the part they get sold doesn't actually match. This happens a lot with Chryslers and some less common models of vehicles. What you shouldn't do, is go to another parts store because usually it's wrong in their system too because the same catalog. What I've recommended to people is now they have the old part out, go ahead and cross reference the part number and usually that works out much better. I had a guy go to three different part stores and every one sold him the wrong starter until he got to mine and I just pulled the number off it and typed it in and he was on his way. Even followed up with the guy and he said he had no issue getting it in. Also if you can't find a part number, find the number from the dealership, any retail parts store should be able to cross reference it to their own in their system.

yep. that is what is soooo great about ebay (if pay pal doesn't screw you that is) that you can see the record of all their transactions to an extent and what people said about the part you are buying. He's right if there is no feedback at least 20 to 50 i would say, get it somewhere else. many parts are too new to have that but if you can find what your looking for with good feedback on the part and what people said about it...you can search all that, then you should be in good shape buying it !!! Also, I never mess with sellers on ebay unless they have a 99% or above positive rating from all their transactions. If you are going to do a lot of purchases or sales there of course it would be good to see how people have been ripped off by paypal before that happens to you so you are not unpleasantly surprised.

I spent 12 years in the auto parts business and never head of silicone blades. None of the stores I've ever worked in, nor our competitors sold them, and they still don't (as far as I know. I didn't know to look for them, but now I will). My sticker shock was batteries. I got out of the business in 1999. Back then we were selling 72 month batteries for around $45-$50. In the entire time since then and up until last year I never had a need for a new battery. First of all, the prices vary by vehicle application, back then all batteries in a particular product line (60 month vs 72 month vs 84 month) were the same price... Around $45-$50 for that 72 monther. Now they start around $80 and can run as much as $130. The deal with batteries... They're all the same. They're made of the same plastic housing, have the same plates and are filled with electrolyte. The only difference is the outside physical dimensions... So why the wide variance in price? The technology in batteries hasn't changed. Granted, there are some types of batteries that didn't exist back then, but those aren't the ones I'm talking about. I'm talking about the regular, maintenance free, lead acid battery that has existed in its current form and without change for who knows how many decades. Probably at least 50+ years when American auto manufacturers all switched to 12 volt systems. And who knows how long before that? The technology hasn't changed, only the amount of voltage (I want to say it was 1964 when everyone finally got on the same page and started producing 12 volt cars and trucks, so at least 55 years since lead acid battery technology has had any significant advances in technology) and the configuration of the plates. Ok... end of rant.

Yep, I purchased two identical high quality tie rods from Amazon but they only had one in stock so the second one came from another vendor (auto parts stores) - they both came in the correct box but one was the correct machined part and the other was a compressed low quality pot metal part. Certainly Amazon replaced the inferior part, but had I not realized it I would installed the cheapo version while paying for the premium one. I've even had parts that you could see someone ground a cheap part name off and stamped it with another, but you had to look at it just right in the light to see it. The only reason Ebay is worse than Amazon besides the shipping is when you do have a problem it takes more work to get it resolved.

Hey Scotty! I have been watching your videos for years and you have saved me thousands of dollars. I have a question for you Master Mechanic. My son has a bad throttle body with sensor. He went to his friends junkyard and got one off the same year make model car. He cleaned it and put it on. What are the chances that the ECM will accept it?

I go to AutoZone for Mobil one oil and filters. I’ve tried Walmart but they never have the good filters for my car (2003 Toyota Camry 2.4l oil burning machine)

Ebay is good source if you know what to look for.....just picked up 2 gaskets that were in Honda packages...that Honda does not make or never did make. had to be counterfeit . just needed the vtec sensor seals.
