@@cristirock3 the dealership was changing the battery with the stop start AGM Mercedes’ authentic batteries for stop start. I think the main issue was that because it had the MBUX system and was always connected to the internet and the app, if you didn’t drive the car for a few days it really drained the battery quite heavily and over time that does damage the battery. I noticed as well on a few occasions after a week if I had not driven I got a low battery warning on the app and on the screen. I loved the Mercedes’ but after two years of annoying faults they bought the car back. The most annoying of all, a car that put itself into neutral whilst driving for no reason! However the system was so easy to use with the touchpad whilst driving. I just didn’t expect it to need a new battery each year of ownership. I just bought the 330i and it’s a nice car, I don’t find it as exciting inside but it feels well built. The bmw whilst not as exciting inside, really is so frugal on petrol I cannot believe it. It’s using 5-6L per 100km and it’s got more power then the Mercedes’ and an even bigger vehicle. It seems to be a bit smarter with the stop start, some how it knows at certain times that it’s not a good idea to engage. The active grill also means the bmw is at optimum temperature within a minute which is really good if you want to put the heating on in winter, the engine is ready to go in no time.

A useless feature? My 3 minute stoplight waits would beg to differ lmao Wear isn't a problem either, an engine doesn't experience any wear at all from starting, it's a common misconception. The problem is running the engine while it's very cold, and the start/stop will turn the engine back on before it cools off. From a wear perspective, starting an engine while hot is no different from revving it a bit. Start/stop does, however, reduce the total runtime of the engine, which does prevent wear, as every revolution of the engine induces wear. And if you're concerned about the starter motor; it's literally designed for this. The only problem is that you have to use a high-quality battery, which is a bit more expensive.
@gwiondavies4909

@deamonchild666
@deamonchild666 2 года назад
A starter motor is the same for cars with and without start stop. The starter motor will have to endure more starts in a shorter amount of time therefore it had more wear over a shorter period of time. This will result in a startermotor needing replacement sooner, that beeing said, that's most likely something the next owner will have to replace since most people ditch cars before they need bit maintaining.

The stop/start function disagrees with my driving technique. When I learned to drive you were meant to set the park brake / hand brake every time. One of the reasons for doing this is to prevent hot brake pads from clamping the discs for an extended period of time and so warping them.
@theonly5001
@theonly5001 2 года назад
Except, that the Handbrake still uses the very same Brakepads, but only on the rear axle as the footbrake. The P position of the gearbox is a different thing however, that most often uses a locking lug inside the gearbox.

For city driving I’ll keep it off cause a stop light isn’t that long but if I’m in a drive thru or waiting in a line somewhere, I’ll use the stop start feature.

I’m surprised anybody is still complaining about this, most people got used to it a few years ago and just left it at that. Enjoy the saved gas and the quiet. Warm starts hardly affect the engine and they’re easy on the starter. Cold starts are very hard yes, but ASS doesn’t kick in until warm. And for anyone saying that the one second difference in 0-60 time makes a life or death difference - that’s likely an indicator that your driving habits are bad, not the car’s engineering. Just let your foot off the brake slightly if you need the engine back while sitting still.

Auto stop start is one of the worst features on a car. It adds unnecessary wear to the timing belt as when the car starts up, that’s when the timing belt is at its highest load. It doesn’t really save you that much fuel so all you’re doing is just adding wear to your engine. Some manufacturers actually have an automatic deactivation of auto stop start over a certain clocked mileage as they even know themselves that it adds excessive wear to the engine.

Most vehicles can have that permanently disabled by plugging a tow adapter in your vehicle to make it think your towing. If your towing something most vehicles won’t allow it to turn off engines at lights due to how much power is needed to tow. Other option is in ford and chevy all you due is unplug one cord and it’s gone for good, not sure for range rover. Might check into it

@SterlingSigurdsen
@SterlingSigurdsen 2 года назад
@@alexmason5521 and are you a mechanic? I doubt it. The oil is not at the top of the motor upon restarting. It’s this first second or two that the oil has to reach again. Plus it’s unnecessary stress on the starter even though yea they’re built better, but they’ll wear out quicker. Also the pulling on the chains and belts wears out quicker due to this. The minimal saving in fuel is not worth the risk of damaging other components.

For some it's annoying, but I actively prefer start/stop. It work surprisingly well with a stick shift; come to a light in neutral with the clutch out, and it kills the motor. (If your foot's on the clutch, it'll keep the engine running, so you can get moving like normal). I put it in 1st with the engine off so the car is held at the light without using the brake. Then, once I have to move, clutch in and the motor fires right up.

So someone may have already said these things.. but 1. The start/stop feature is partly to help cut back on emissions, but it's mainly for fuel savings. As a child I was always told to leave the car running when we'd stop somewhere because you used more gas stopping and restarting it. That was true in carburated engines. In modern fuel injected engines the rule of thumb is that if you're going to be stopped for 10 seconds or more, it's more fuel efficient to cut the engine off and restart it. And 2. Start/stop systems do not wear out your vehicles starter. The main starter is not used to restart the vehicle with this feature. There is a small electric motor that restarts the vehicle while this feature is active. The only time the starter is used to start the vehicle is after a full shut off.
@DrivenHard
@DrivenHard 2 года назад
Correct. Except for the starter which starts the engine. I’ve had them fail. It’s one starter that does it. Might change with manufacturers but JLR is using one starter.
@FullmetalC5
@FullmetalC5 2 года назад
@@DrivenHard then it must change with manufacturers because every modern system I've heard of uses electric motors. The brake pedal is wired into it and it activates at a certain pedal depression point. This knowledge is coming from master ASE certified mechanics.
