I've had these same feelings just trying to get to the tournament level. Spent a few years saving everything I had when I was 23 and bought a 20' 1996 Nitro savage and all the rods and lures I could get to fill it and fished local upstate NY lakes every day after work. Put everything I had into fishing and saving to prepare for future entry fee's and it just felt like it was impossible task working full time. Ended up needing to move so I stored my boat at our warehouse at my work and a few months ago it was broke into on a weekend and they stole a work truck and trailer loaded with stuff from our shop. Ended up taking my B.A.S.S. bag with my 2 Garmin fish finders that also happened to have the Title for my Boat, Trailer and motor and registration in it that I kept with the boat when I stored it so it wouldn't be lost as I planned on selling it and upgrading this spring. The expensive fish finders are one thing but now I have a Nitro bass boat that still has one more payment and I have no way to register it to use it and I cannot even sell it without the titles and registration. Police recovered the damaged truck and trailer but none of the other items and the company told the 3 of us that lost personal items that the deductible was to high to make a claim so its our loss. Safe to say the 5 year loan on the boat and dream to fish for a living died the same day and I'm still not sure how to recover from it mentally let alone financially.

I can relate to this .I worked 40 yesterday in production facilities. I loved the shift work and had at least 4 days off out of 7 to be with family or fishing. But it was a effort to get anything done at work. I needed to make decisions on the fly and always was the wrong one trying to please to many bosses that were afraid to make decisions that would effect there careers. I am done now an retired. only have to please family and fish opens and clubs. life is good. Thanks for wearing your emotions on your sleeve and sharing your experience with us. love ya !!

Appreciate this video. Lots of truth in here that many don't want to talk about, whether it's the MLF "change the game" type format or just the mental side of fishing and life in general. Without the conversation about the issues, nothing changes. It's always someone on the outsides ideology of how things should be. Not the people living day to day. The human element is lost in many places. The "bottom line" is what is focused on, not what actually creates that bottom line. People. It should be about the people 1st. The rest will fall in place

You have a good business mind and with the success of Bass U and your social game and all, I think you should start your own tournament series...Let anglers be anglers, sign up Feider, Strader, Big Show, Boom Boom, Ish and others with personality and skills and go for it! With some creative thinking, I think someone could capture the excitement of the weigh-in, yet still preserve the conservation value with catch-weigh-release. Who's that responsible, austere looking guy from 2017. Wearing the baseball hats? I didn't recognize him.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
To be fair about it. It was less the particular organization you were in (although, some did 'take the biscuit' back then). It was something else. I was working in an engineers back then too. Too busy owing to staff roster undercutting and pincing. To have much in the way of 'peripheral vision' (what the administrators would do is hire out our services). Kind of package up together as 'something'. Find a buyer and strike a price. Kind of like that culture by which they described investment banking and investment in homes by people. Back in an earlier time period. Before 'the crash' happened. And the idea had been. The lower you could sell these services at. In order to hammer your competitors in engineering professional services. To drive them out of business. To gain a dominant market position (in a weak austere type economy here in Europe). The faster you could get what little engineers were left on the roster. To cut through a workload. And the more you could recycle and recyle those engineers. To take on projects without enough resources. The better it looked. When the administrators (who had zero in way of schooling for that). Would look as they presented their quarterly reports to the directors.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
The engineers themselves were all highly trained, highly skilled and creative people. A lot of them really young and fresh into the workforce (many older ones had retired or stepped back in the austerity decade here). Yet they were being marketed and packaged. As commodities. The administrators thought it was like selling fridges (white goods). That these parts were all inter-changeable and replaceable. The 'stuff' was put together from a mechanical perspective. In some distant factory. It arrived here to where the 'consumers' were in the western economies. And what you needed was a guy with a truck and a trolley. To wheel this shrink wrapped thing. Into a customer's place. For example, I remember our company got bridges and things to work on. To build and design. And we had no bridge engineer. It was a free and open market competition system. Made possible by electronics (and perversely, the more work that you took on). Even in an irresponsible way. The more brownie points the electronic bidding system clocked up for you. So you got into this positive feedback loop. Of having more and more work where the price for offering it got floored. And you sold services, based on skinnier and skinnier engineering professional rosters. Who got heaped with more and more projects (they re-cycled the same talent over and over again in a single year, burning out professionals in the process). So it became a think. Where by the administrators ended up as these kinds of nursery supervisors. And the professionals themselves ended up. Becoming the babies in the nursery. Who did what they were told to do. By these folks.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
What does fishing and engineering services have in common? They are both at their foundations. Intensely focused on problem solving approaches to things. Elimination of things that don't work. Finding a formula that does. And sometimes you have to take more than one go at figuring out things. The thing I saw in the engineering field. Was the administrators have the economic shock. Somehow managed to gain an upper hand. And focused moreso on hiring young, inexperienced employees. Who believed that if they didn't not 'solve' the problem. On the first attempt. They had somehow failed the mission. Older hands would immediately recognize it as odd. To approach their professional tasks in that way. The best engineering I ever came across once said something. He said engineering is not the science of adding on materials to make something work (anyone can do that). Bolt more stuff on. It is the science of knowing how to take material away. In a way that it still works. But by using less material. And this falls into line with some of the trends in fishing. That have happened in modern times.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
In talking about Ray Scott, for example. On the Luke Dunkin show, one of the veteran anglers who was around at the time. Remember how the other anglers had put a solid brick weight. Into his tackle box, in the bottom largest tackle drawer. And Ray Scott (who was in on the joke). Had proceeded to take lures out of the anglers tackle box. As he did with other anglers that were 'over' ten pounds in weight. For their tackle (as the veteran explained, nowadays anglers carry around 'ten pounds' weight in spinner baits alone). It's contrasted nowadays. Where you need five Lithium Ion batteries, and three different forward facing sonar systems. Running in parallel at the front of the boat. Fishing had turned into something. That is more about adding things on. Rather than taking it away. Fishing has evolved away from a process of problem solving. And more towards something. That anyone with enough stuff. Can take a shot at doing.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
That's what I found with those young bridge engineers too. Who had never done a bridge before (and we had let go of all of those engineers, who understood how loads are carried differently in these somewhat 'dynamic' pieces of structural engineering). Compared to buildings and things, where there is less stuff that is heavy. Moving across their platforms. The administrators assumed that bridge provision. Was like being a distribution warehouse hub. For affordable white goods. That were sold in catalogues. Oh, that looks like a nice one. I'll order it. Do you charge for postage and packing? There is a special offer this month. Fabulous. It got kind of ridiculous. You'd see the youngsters trying to use bridge software and things (which were all excellent and helpful). If you knew what you were doing. In order to try and plug these holes in the system. That were really holes had been purposefully put there. To make the procurement process for bridges. Less dependent on human resources and qualified talent. And more dependent on inter-changeable young graduate engineering 'parts'. Who could be recycled and recycled. Burned out and replaced again (which made the economic model of the business, appear to be working more efficiently at a higher level). As the balance sheet was shown to the management. It wasn't just fishing organizations. I would say it was a dominant philosophy in. It was across the board. In lots and lots of creative areas of industry.

BASS's entire operation got embarrassing around like 2014/2015. The online coverage of the events was garbage, promotion nonexistent, follow up coverage unclear. All hype words, no substance. Interesting to hear it was awful for the anglers as well.

It's still not at MLF level in my opinion. My opinion as a consumer. MLF BPT is a much better production. Not talking about format or anglers or anything like that.
