I think the dancing scene at the wedding was also a callback to season one, showcasing Devi’s growth in embracing her heritage. In the first season, Devi makes fun of bollywood dance performers and feels embarrassed of them. It was nice to see her embrace her culture by performing a Tamil dance herself.

Paxton developed extraordinarily well as a character. He was so smooth, cool, and understanding. I really wish it was him that Devi hooked up with, but that setup faded in season 4, even though they both mutually became good friends. Ben did redeem himself in a good way though. i loved this season and i cried a lot in the later episodes. i loved that we saw devi's fixation on princeton stems from that being her dream with her father. at its core this show is such a raw and brilliant depiction of how complex grief is. not only did we see why princeton is so important to devi but we also see ways she's still grieving her father, even though she's doing a much better job at balancing her grief of his death and her celebration of his life. devi's character growth throughout the series is incredible; this was most noticeable when she genuinely apologizes to margo and when she's so quick to break up with ethan because in the past she would've done anything and excused anything for a boyfriend. i do think there could have been so much development with ethan and they shouldn't have just gotten rid of him after they broke up. i think he does play an important part in devi's growth being another sexual awakening so i wouldn't throw away the whole storyline but i would've liked to see backstory on why he acts out or see an arc where he gets better. i really like how things ended with paxton. devi and paxton have rooted for each other the whole way and i love the emotional depth that was given to him considering season one he was very shallow. their goodbye felt like such a good conclusion. i was partly hoping she'd end up with ben and partly hoping she'd end up with no one. i think it would show a lot of growth for her to happily and willingly be single, and they made them get together soo late (literally the last few minutes !!!). i think they are the most compatible but also it's odd because it was made very clear early on that they have completely different values. i'm also generally a hater of enemies to lovers because of how questionable things can get and this was more of rivals to lovers but i do agree that they brushed aside a lot of inappropriate things they both said and that made me feel weird. also getting rid of the side characters (aneesa, manesh, etc) seemed so unnecessary; they could've easily fit aneesa into the group at school and had manesh come over with kamala. we don't even know where aneesa is going to college.
@rica3947

I thought Nalini not knowing anything about Devi's college applications was supposed to show her trying to be less strict with her and learning to trust her desicions. I do agree however, that it's kind of unrealistic that Devi wouldn't even tell her were she applied. Maybe it was a kind of situation were Nalini told her "make sure you have safety schools!" and Devi being like "yeah yeah I know what I'm doing, stop stressing" and so it was never further discussed?

As much as change is beautiful, it is scary, and seeing the excitement, fear, and confusing feelings Devi had as she enters a new chapter in her life felt really validating. Ethan was robbed of a decent storyline in my opinion! I don’t know if I’m biased bc he’s hot and was so sweet to Devi but I wanted to know more about him? And I also thought it was kind of classist for everyone to act like he was a total lost cause (the teachers, admissions officers, Devi’s friends). Like yeah he’s a bit of a rebel and doesn’t apply himself at school, but why is that? Idk it just felt like everyone sort of gave up on him and then he literally disappeared hahahaha. It could have been a good opportunity for Devi to recognise that especially at a public school, not everyone has had the same upbringing or emphasis on academics in their lives. Especially as a lot of the season was her learning that there’s more to life, it felt like there was a missed opportunity there. For example, I liked how with Paxton there was emphasis on him feeling like he wasn’t “smart enough” for Devi. The script could have given Ethan so much more imo. I can only assume there was a scheduling / filming conflict and that’s why they removed him 🤣
@zanti4132

I don't know what the big appeal about the Ethan character is, other than he is, you know, hot. In the final analysis, he's just a stereotypical skater boy - nothing too original or interesting here. The character serves as a catalyst for Devi's emerging maturity. Once that plot point had been fulfilled, it was reasonable to drop the character.

I loved this season. I feel like there were a few flaws, including Ethan not existing after episode 4, which annoyed me a bit as it would have been nice to see him have some character development. Devi's growth this season was lovely to see and the representation of Indian weddings was nice to see as I didn't see much of it. For Paxton, I think that it made sense after a while, though I am happy he ended up with Lindsay. Though, I would have liked to see Melanie see Dr Jackson as it would have been nice to see watching the show in the past. Kamala's husband was never seen till the end and it annoyed me😂, let me see that funny man!! I think that the Devi being lifted up part of the college thing was dealt with in a bitter sweet way with Devibeing lifted up without her consent and Ben being punched, I felt like the police would have been called in a real life situation and the guy would have been arrested. The Fabi Princeton school thing was sketchy..., She should have been honest with Devi from the start and taken her aside but I can see why Fabi didn't tell Devi. Elenaor this season felt like a nothing character..., I wish we saw her and Trent grow rather than breaking up, the marriage proposal reminded me of Teddy Wells from Brooklyn 99. I liked this season, and think it was a really nice way to wrap things up but one of the things I think they missed out on was Trent's development. They start out with him being kind of lost, and not really having anything in his life other than dating Eleanor, and I was hoping that they would lead with him figuring out what he wants to do with himself, but instead they just dropped that storyline and moved on... which is disappointing, since I think it would've been nice to see him figure out what he wants to do (since it's very relateable, to not know what you want for your future).

I might make a video on this, but I feel like what they wanted to do with Ben's storyline is to let his self-worth grow. I don't really feel like he was "ghosting" her cause he responded, but he just assumed that Devi just wanted to get the 'boink' and get out of there. After being cheated on, his self worth took a blow. Ofcourse that doesn't right his wrongs, and I feel like the plot line was mostly to make the slow burn even longer (which I didn't like this season), but it gives it some more context. I feel like the moment he broke up with Margot was a moment of growth for him: him being single over being with someone who doesn't see his worth. I think he was also just really afraid to get rejected again by someone who he really loves: Devi

Totally agree that there was should be more of Aneesa. Can make peace with having less of Kamala as we've seen a lot of her character growth and development in the past seasons and she's an adult with a lot of stability at this point. But Aneesa deserved a better wrap up. The making up of Eleanour and Devi so quickly over Ethan made sense to me as it was yet another dimension of how they're both matured and capable of handling it better over the years. The Fabiola and Princeton subplot made me uneasy though. Broke my heart to see Fabiola legit being scared of Devi. They both are better than that, but teenagers can be needlessly messy sometimes. The season also continued the tradition of having fabulous moments and ending plot wise in the final episode but tear inducing emotional scenes in the penultimate episode. This has been the trend in almost all the seasons. Also loved all the Paxton Devi interactions seeing how they acknowledge the story and continue to be good friends. The character development in Paxton was unreal. I cherish the Ben and Devi ending. Made the most sense and they're truly right for each other but I feel as a main character, Ben should have given more potential in terms of plot and character growth. All of his individual subplots feel the same. Same problems about academics and loneliness, even his break ups feel the same. His Devi related storylines were the most interesting.

Indian mothers tend to ask their kids A LOT of questions regarding their decision. If Devi was only applying for ivy's her mother SHOULD'VE known it!! Like, you're an indian mother, and this nationality mothers are tend to me more bugging than any other. She would ask you what you had for lunch, for breakfast and for dinner. She'd call twice in a day if you're in another city. And really? Nalini wasn't aware about Devi's ivy choice. personally, i hoped they'd stop the david nickname and all the weight it carries. every time someone brings up the issue of ben's racist and sexist microaggressions towards devi, benvi shippers will shoot back with the fact that devi was also anti-semitic to him. but at the end of the day, one person being racist to someone doesn't give you an excuse to be racist back. it's why there's an issue with interracial enemies/rivals to lovers because it ends up becoming a breeding ground for racist remarks. yes it could have been resolved if he apologised for everything he said to devi and she did the same but i don't think it's a very stable foundation upon which you can build a relationship. racism goes hand in hand with sexism, esp with mocking her “moustache”, saying she was “built like a shot putter”. bc dark-skinned brown and black women are subject to masculinisation & other stereotypes in a way white men aren’t because they’re considered the standard. he never shows real remorse towards being rude to her and he never stops. oh and before people start saying "oh david means beloved in hebrew". you fully well know it did not start out like that. the nickname is textbook changing an ethnic name to an easier white name. it would have been less of an issue if he started calling her david while they were together bc THEN it would mean beloved - it's been a thing since their time as enemies/academic rivals.

This season was bad. There was so much that didn't make sense. Paxton and Devi have wayyyy more chemistry than Ben and Devi, and Devi and Paxton always cause each other to grow, whereas with Ben, it's just constant bickering. Manish literally disappeared. Ethan showing up for only two eps makes absolutely no sense. There should have been a bigger closure scene in regards to Devi's dad where it's clear that she truly has finally healed. There was no epic narrator moment with John McEnroe and Andy Sandberg and Gigi Hadid. John McEnroe lines used to make me laugh so so hard, and they all just fell flat this season. I don't understand why they brought a new character with the substitute teacher when they could have used that screentime to develop Kamala or maybe more with Nalini's story with Margot's dad. Elanor giving up in Julliard makes no sense when there are so many other places she could go to like NYU, etc. I'm surprised they didn't include more of Paxton's family, especially Rebecca, as she is key in terms of his growth. Maybe this is asking a lot of just one season. SO? the show is popular, you can split all this up over two more seasons. People will still watch it. Having 5 seasons doesn't turn it into Riverdale with its never ending seasons. Overall, this season just didn't have the spark that the last seasons did.

I dont like enemies to lovers when its interracial couples esp when it has a white person in the couple. because the micro aggressions are so strong. like I love enemies to lovers trope, its gets me every time, but I notice I like it more when its people of the same race and there is not such a big power imbalance in the relationship. also justice for anessa and Manish, they had no screen time!!!

Yeah, this is the problem I had with Ben and Devi. He had way too many racist and sexist microaggressions towards her (from continuing to call her “David”, never apologizing for calling her and her friends “unfuckable nerds” and getting the whole school to call them that, mocking her “mustache”, saying she was “built like a shot putter”, etc). Yes, she shoots back at him, but it’s not the same thing. Dark-skinned brown and black women are subject to masculinized & othering stereotypes in a way white men aren’t because they’re considered the standard. Also he just says “I love you” and “I was an asshole” without saying how or why or showing genuine remorse and growth.

The actors for Aneesa and Manish were busy with other projects and had scheduling conflicts unfortunately. Megan Suri is starting in a new horror film called It Lives Inside and working on other projects and Utkarsh is producing/starring in a new Disney+ movie coming out in a few weeks called World’s Best, in addition to starting on Ghosts.

@parvatir3964
@parvatir3964 Год назад
@@janethesimmer7512 It pissed me off too! The thing is Ben/Devi fans will say it’s “just a nickname”, but it’s not. He didn’t start calling her that when they were friends and she didn’t consent to it. He started calling her that in Season 1 when he was bullying her by calling her and her friends “unfuckable nerds” (and got the whole school to call them that), mocking her for being a virgin, mocking her about facial hair, mocking her for being paralyzed/in a wheelchair & seeing a therapist, calling her paralysis “fake”, etc. the list goes on. He was very much being hostile and a bully. And he never apologized for any of that stuff even though being called a “UN” made Devi break down crying in her therapist’s office and in her dream with her dead dad. And white people refusing to call POC by their ethnic names and giving them a white nickname “because it’s easier for them” is a textbook racist microagression. Giving her a white masculine nickname along with his other comments about her “mustache” and being a “UN” is part of a masculinizing/othering dynamic brown and black women (especially dark-skinned ones) often experience. It’s super problematic that he’s been allowed to keep calling her “David” over 4 seasons while still being a sexist jerk to her until the end.

yeah I kept thinking where is Aneesa??? she’s one of the best characters so the only explanation why she could’ve been cast to the side was the actress filming another project? I really disliked that the grandma dated outside of her culture and I felt like that story line was so forced!It was her adherence to their cultural roots that made the show more realistic. Considering she gave Kamala such a hard time, it just did not make sense for her to break those standards with her own romance life.

I never liked Devi’s character. I liked her even less in Season 4. I feel that the supporting actors such as Eleanor, Paxton, the Shrink, (the list can go on)…are all better actors than the lead character, Devi. The way she delivers her lines lacks emotion; it’s just a bunch of words. As a South Asian (like Devi), I can’t relate to her struggles. Getting laid was never a priority for me or many other South Asian students in high school. And Devi is portrayed as thirsty for sex throughout the show and especially in Season 4. It makes her look cringey desperate…not classy. And in Season 4, there is a lot of glorification of losing your virginity and having sex. There’s that scene where Devi and her friends enter the school expressing pride in no longer being virgins. The Paxton congratulated her on her sexual experience when he and Devi get locked in that room. People have to be intelligent consumers that can detect the “messages” being sent to the youth within the comedy. And they have to question, “Are those messages healthy??” Don’t be a blind viewer. This show is encouraging students to be sexually active in high school and to wear that as a badge of honor…….especially South Asian students …..who even today…….tend have more conservative values ….even while living in the US. For many South Asian students, their families do not encourage sleeping around in high school and it is not treated as a priority. Never Have I Ever encourages South Asian students to continue being the “stereotypically bright, high achieving students”….but to also start shedding your clothes. It makes me want to question Mindy Kaling….Was losing her virginity her top priority as well when she was in high school? Was she just as thirsty and desperate as Devi? I don’t think Devi represents the values or the priorities for many South Asian high school students. Why couldn’t Mindy Kaling make a show where the “Desi” kid who is not into losing their virginity …..makes a positive difference in a more substantial way? Oh that’s right……..it’s because a storyline that doesn’t have “sex” won’t sell. Sex sells ……even if it’s high schoolers sleeping around…..it’ll be more profitable. Congratulations Mindy. Her last name is Chokalingam. And “lingam” means penis in Hindi. It’s darkly funny…..cuz the writer’s lead heroine, Devi, is all about wanting…d!ck.

I don't get that. I do think that Paxton and Devi's relationship was done well and it was important for both of them even if they're not endgame. They both helped each other grow and Paxton was really important for Devi when she lost her dad because having that unattainable dream helped her push through her grief.
