The pinnacle of the Doobie Brothers career. After all the high energy highway music...an exquisite love song aching with melancholy. I love the Doobie Brothers.
Pat Simmons is lead vocal here. Love his voice. I believe you were thinking of Tom Johnston who handled the lead most of the time during the early years.
I agree. My favorite Doobie Brothers song tbh. I come back to this one about 6-10 times a year (at least) since I first heard it early 90's and it never loses that beauty. Black Water is a close second.
Hello there, my friend! I was just thrilled that you listened to this song. My husband is a singer, and when he and I first started dating, he would sing this song to me. 22 years (and a 20 year old daughter) later, he still does. To this day, I get teary eyed whenever I hear it. I'm so glad you enjoyed it too! Lisa
these songs were the absolute BEST work the dooobies did... the guitar work, incredible... the songs, intricate and beautiful...!!!!! The Captain and Me is still my favorite album EVER...!!! including songs like Dark Eyed Cajun Woman... Ukiah... The Captain and Me.. Clear As the Driven Snow.... fantastic songs...!!!!!!
The Doobies have a ton of hits, but my favorites always seem to be the Patrick Simmons compositions. Tommy Johnston had the more recognizable voice, but Patrick had the heart and soul.
This album came out at the end of 9th grade, so all the songs were a huge part of my high school years. I just love the Doobies and I think I was blessed to grow up during the 70s with all the awesome music.
One of their best and most underrated songs. It’s one you just close your eyes and let wash over you like a hot shower after a long, hard and stressful days work.
Love this song along with "Another Park Another Sunday" So many reactors look for Micheal McDonald hearing the Doobie Brothers. They had 2 fantastic different sounding singers before he ever joined.
This is Patrick Simmons and other vocalist pre-McDonald is Tom Johnston. This and Tom Johnston's tunes are the original Doobie Brothers, not McDonald. ☮🖤🤘 Edit: Tom Johnston sang Long Train Runnin'.
Without Love = Long Train Running. Written and sung by Tom Johnston. South City Midnight Lady written and sung by Pat Simmons. Pat wrote and sung Black Water. Tom wrote and sung Listen to the Music. The two creators of The Doobie Brothers before M McDonald came in to the band. Still going strong, M McD still guests with them occasionally. They are still all friends....
The Doobies were a Tommy Johnston phenomenon. How he managed to have all this talent gravitate to him is nothing short of a miracle! They will always be Tommy’s band. You should check out Tommy’s single Savannah nights to understand his influence.
Yes it was done before Michael was in the band, this is my favorite of all their songs but many more good ones I was 18 when I discovered the doobies after high school . I'm 68 now and it just brings me back to the days of cruising meeting young ladies and some them are great memories.
Yes!! Beautiful song. My first DB album. I really loved the pre-Michael McDonald era. 1973 and 13 years old. Ill always love the early 70s. Thank you Harry. Love you!!
Clear as the Driven Snow is one of my favourite DB tracks. Another one which never gets a mention is Daughters of the Sea, from the Album What Were Once Vices......love that one too!
This sounds like Patrick Simmons on lead. Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and Michael McDonald at one time we're lead singers, for The Doobie Brothers!♥️🎸🥁🎺✌️
I was extremely fortunate to see them at The Hollywood Bowl in '87. Both Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald were there, along with Skunk Baxter! They did most of their songs from both eras. Whatta show! And the cool thing is, I won the tickets from a radio station! My fave song by them is Another Park Another Sunday. It came out as a single with Black Water as a B-side, but Black Water is the one that became a mega hit. I still prefer Another Park. I like your vibe so I subscribed
This is soft southern rock I believe. A beautiful song through and through. I hope I see more ppl react to it and was excited when I saw you did! Very nice reaction and thank you!
@@junglejim5785 thanks for the info.... If it's brought up again and I know it probably will be... because people always attribute southern rock to bands that are not from the south
Bands progress by having different sounds, voices and so many things. I have seen so many one hit wonders that couldn't understand. The Doobie Brothers are progressive and I don't mean in political ways.
Patrick Simmons, who wrote and sings this song, said in an interview that it is about his wife. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter played the pedal steel guitar here. I think much of the beauty of the songs on this album is due to their producer at that time, Ted Templeman. He brought in a string section that plays on some of the songs and it works beautifully. IMHO, this was their best album and provided us with the complete kaleidoscope of what Rock and Roll was in 1973. 😎💘🎸
Oh wow, I haven't thought of this song in years....I always loved it! Another wonderful memory trip back to my early days of discovering great music (I was 13 when it came out). Thank you for reacting to this beautiful song!
Those of us who’ve been fans from their beginning, always think of the Doobies as having the Great Tom Johnston as lead guitarist and vocalist. I even went to China Grove, Texas. It was foggy and I was driving in town, and almost missed it! Dry little place, like the song says, just a little bit south of San Antonio,...but if it’s foggy, you could miss it!
This is a Pat Simmons tune. He and Tom Johnston were the primary creative drive in the early days. Saw them in Chicago a couple years ago. Smoking show! My favorite Doobies tune is called "For Someone Special" by bassist Tiran Porter.
I can see what you are saying about John Denver. Pat even sounds a bit like him.. Never ever thought about that before. This has been my all time favourite song for 50 years ( Yes, it was on The Captain and Me, 1973!) Enjoy brother xx
Really glad you got a chance to listen to this. My top three DB songs. Tied for 1st place, South City Midnight Lady and Pure as the Driven Snow, and in third place Minute by Minute.
My prefd with the Doobies are those earlier (first 5 albums),Harri. Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons led the band ,trading lead vocal leads per track (tho Tom wrote and sang more). When Michael McDonald came in,their direction became more soulful/top 40 oriented. I'll take this vesrion any day--they still had alot of variety, but they also rocked out at times. Awesome band! The later albums with Johnston back in the fold are quite good, too. Dive in! Cheers, T
1973, long long before McDonold, lol. Captain and me was a huge album with a wide range of songs. This song to the rockin "without you" and everything in between
LOVE this song!!! Been listening to it since it came out.. one of my all time favorites …. Also listen to “Dark Eyed Cajon Woman “ Great reaction !!! 😊
This song was written and sung by Patrick Simmons who was the only consistent member throughout The Doobie's tenure. A lot of the early Doobies had Patrick on the lead vocals and were a different sounding band before Michael McDonald. Love this song, an early beautiful Doobie song, with great instruments and harmonies. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Neal. Just a great memory. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
You know your Doobie Brothers, Mary...you're most welcome. Only their true fans would immediately know that Pat Simmons was singing lead. Saw these guys in '75 here in Austin...my second ever concert to attend. Cheers back at you from Texas!
@@marybaillie8907 I've seen them four times over the years here in Austin. When I first saw them in Feb of '75, Tom Johnson was recovering from exhaustion and alcohol and drug abuse and didn't perform. That said, Pat Simmons and this new guy, Michael McDonald, who had played on Steely Dan albums never skipped a beat.
The "Captain and Me" is the third studio album and it's a Platinum album. Although, the three songs that were the biggest hits were "Long Train Runnin' " " China Grove" and "Without You" this was sung by the (guitarist, vocals) Patrick Simmons and he also wrote this song, however, their sound was just about to change. Because the lead vocalist Tom Johnston had become sick during a national tour and the band replaced him with Michael McDonald, I believe it was 1975. It was supposed to be temporary, talk about luck🍀and the rest as they say... was history~
Hola brudda 🤙, I think this was before Michael McDonald, I think it was called progressive county, I was in high school when this came out loved it. Thanks for this, brought back so many good memories.
It’s so very telling that us listening public type people have named nearly all the songs they’ve ever recorded, as a “best song” or a song you shouldn’t miss. Personally, I love them all and think I have all their albums, or certainly most of them.
I never associated this as a love song. To me it was a one night stand for a young man with a lot of issues and turmoil who found some comfort with a young lady of the evening.
Harri you should check out a live concert of them doing this song with a sax player it is awesome , it was one of the concerts at the live at the Wolf trap.
Best Doobies!!! This album spent a whole summer on my turntable way back when. I still listen to it regularly. Harri, you should do the song "Without You" from this same album. You won't be comparing them to John Denver. It is a scorcher, with the last 1/2 of the song being pure fire.
the captain and me was an album in almost everyone's collection - including mine. bought it in '74 and still have it. perfect mix of songs for any mood. china grove of course is one of the most recognizable leading riffs in rock history.
I’m so glad you’re reacting to this. This entire album is a masterpiece but most people have only heard the songs that got airplay. The Captain and Me is one of the best albums ever made IMO. BTW, I think it sounds country because of the steel guitar.
