You are on the golf course and you start missing short putts; it starts putting pressure on the rest of your short game and the domino effect continues through the long game. When you Reverse this, and you start making all your short putts, you then take the pressure off everything and you can start free wheeling the rest of the game! This is how you want to play golf, big time!
This video has the kind of information that is so simple, you are going to ask yourself: “How the heck did I miss that? It’s so obvious!” And the changes are so easy to implement and so instant because your machine is MADE TO PERFORM A PERFECT PUTTING STROKE WITHOUT EVEN TRYING.

This is hands down the best putting video I have ever seen. I struggle so much usually and two to three footers are generally a nightmare for me. After watching the above instructional video I found it so much easier. Two footers drained into the hole and the others went close or went in. Thanks a lot Shawn.

About putting...aaaarrrggghhh! After 60+ years of playing this great game, a few things have started to make sense. We right handers usually miss to the right on pressure putts. Sure, every now and then you'll see somebody yank one left but at least 85% of the time we're short right when it really counts. Here's my theory, Shawn. Perception has a lot to do with putting. Playing the game sideways just makes it that much more difficult. When a golfer is standing over the golf ball and needs to make that five footer for a Coke...or whatever...the "yips" creep in and he doesn't trust what he sees. Instinctively, he pushes HIS HANDS AT THE HOLE. It's a reflex. When he does this, the putt misses to the right. If our toes are six inches from the golf ball at address and our hands are hanging somewhere above the front of our toes, we should experiment with this idea. Try making your hands go six inches to the left of the hole. Yep. Pick a blade of grass or some kind of mark that is the number of inches left of the hole as the ball is from your toes and simple stroke your hands at that blade of grass or mark. Do this about ten times and watch what happens. You will have a brand new attitude about short putts. I recall Doug Sanders and Ernie Els, among a whole slew of golfers who, under pressure, missed very important putts to the right. Instinct got the better of them. They wanted to make the putt so badly they pushed their hands at the hole. I just wanted to send you this to give you something to think about and maybe try. Once you understand why you miss right, this could be one way to fix that problem for some people.

I came across this older video the other day, and it has helped me so much on short 3 foot putts, but also with putts from 5-10 feet. Well, I watched this video and took note when Shawn mentioned puts drifting just outside the hole when using the line on the ball to line up the putt. I watched the technique of lining up on an incorrect line and then moving the legs more in line until it feels correct...didn't think it would work but...wow, I went down stairs and tried it out and putts were rolling over the center of the cutout I made as a hole. Amazing! Try it out!

Shawn, I have been watching a number of your RU-vid videos and the improvement in my ball striking is very noticeable. I still lack consistency, especially with the driver but that is getting better as I trust my swing more (I am not sure why I still lock on the ball more with the driver). Putting has been a struggle for years, I have played two rounds since watching this video and my putting has been tremendously improved. I had 3 birdies in a round for the first in forever, all my putts for birdie were over at least 5 feet - not gimme's. I ditched using the line, focused on prediction - starting with a setup I knew wouldn't work, repositioned until it felt good, and let it go. Bingo. If not for a cruel lip out due to "Quarantine Pin with foam" it is likely I would have shot 79. I had a handful of putts that were great feeling putts that just didn't go in. I would recommend that anyone that struggles with pulling/pushing short putts that use the line, STOP. Use your process and the results will follow. Thank you for all the videos, I am having more fun at golf than I have in some time. All the extra thoughts that had ruined many a good round are diminishing and my score is dropping.

Great video Shawn. I stopped using the logo ( line ) a couple of years ago and my putting improved. Recently I started using he logo ( name - not the thin line ) PERPENDICULAR to the line that I see. Especially for long putts it lets me see the blade of the putter strike the putt SQUARELY and I " see " the putter go THROUGH line. Seems to be working for me. Improves my stroking the putt more definitively.

My putting has become so much better when I started seeing the ball going in the hole and then just letting my body decide how hard to strike (about 40 to 31.5 putts per round). Putting is very personal and to each their own. But, making those partial swings and stopping behind the ball is a recipe for the yips. The full stroke next to the ball and moving in is great. I’ve also never heard another instructor purposely aim wrong and then gradually try to adjust it. Not sure if that was just to emphasize your point, but either picking an intermediate target to align the face or using a line on the ball is much more effective than randomly choosing a line that looks right or adjusting beside the ball while your vision is distorted.

I've been searching for years on ways to fix my putting. My biggest weakness for sure. I actually set my course record the other week (-9 62) in a tournament with 30 putts! Gets extremely frustrating striking the ball so well and then feeling like I have 0 chance at making putts. I have more confidence on a 100 yard wedge shot than I do on an 8 foot putt its really bad. Long putts I feel fine with, I don't really expect to make them but seem to make good strokes and lag it close. But those 6-12 footers I seem to not do anything right. I feel like I could do some really awesome things in golf if I could figure out my putting.

@@golflessons thanks Shawn. I went to the putting green this evening and worked on the Goldilocks method with aiming. Aimed too far left, then slowly to the target, then too far right, then back to my intended target and that really felt like it helped! Not only was it good practice fine tuning where I think I'm aiming vs reality but it definitely helped free up my stroke because I was much more confident that I was setting up the momentum of my stroke right on target. Also helped me feel like on breaking putts especially, that I was could find that zone easy where I felt my aim was a little low but I could still squeeze it in low side with extra speed, and then would adjust aim slightly higher to where I could die it in with slower speed. Never really felt like that before! Really exited to keep working on that and the rest of the lesson in this video. Thanks again!

Do a goldie locks with alignment from way left; then when the ball feels like it has no choice but to go in, let momentum put the ball into the hole and just be aware if you are interfering or not. Wonder why DJ, and most Pros use a line on the ball? I've been practicing with a line, and realize that a behind-the-ball "binocular" sight isn't the same when over the ball. When I square up the putter to the line, it usually looks as thought the ball would miss left due to crummy, undeveloped side-vision. I've been trying to rectify that by squaring up the putter, then step into the ball so my side vision looks like a square poke would put the ball in the hole. I'll try using this method and see how many more roll in.

I never really line the putt up. After I look at everything I stand over the ball to putt and I look at the hole and follow the line from the hole back to my putter head. Should i keep it still at least until the ball has been released? Thanks!

Hi Shawn, at 11:52 when talking about not aligning the logo anymore, but doing goldy locks from too far misaligned to properly aligned, you are doing such with your side vision, which we have established is not accurate. Can you elaborate further? Thank you
@golflessons
@golflessons 4 года назад
Without the ABSOLUTE REFERENCE, the side vision is an absolute dudd; it will always give you the wrong information. This absolute reference gives the brain the bread crum trail it needs to find the line of putt accurately. You must match that with your human balanced putting machine that will allow you to use MOMENTUM, not manipulation, to roll the ball in the direction you want to go. Notice I say: “if I let momentum roll the ball in the direction it feels like IT WANTS TO GO, does it match the ball rolling into the hole on the line And speed I want it to?”

If the world's best players, male and female, make these kind of errors week in, week out, it's kind of ridiculous for Sean to state that his proposed technique will stop you and me from missing a putt. I'm not saying that the advice isn't sound, and it may reduce your missed putt stats, but it's nonsense to say that you'll never miss a short putt again. Turn down the rhetoric I say.

Shawn, you might want to get Sav's putter lie checked, her putter is way toe down, cannot be normal.

Yes! I know! Just like Steve Striker! 😀👍 If she ends up putting well like him, we are off to the races!
@vincentregis

Striker is about 2 to 4 degrees toe down. Sav is like 4 to 7. But hey, as you say if it works for her, that probably compensate for the natural tendency to aim left ;-)

2:30 are you implying you know how to putt better then DJ?
@golflessons
@golflessons Год назад
There is a lot more to putting than the stroke; reading is the big one; I play once a week and don’t see as many courses so my reading is a bit more dull and then you have talent, where DJ is one of the best in the world and in another league…but technically, I am more sound yes and my technique will never changes because it is in balance and I never feel like I have to change putters or grips or work on my stroke; ever; because the ball always starts on the line I am set up on. So I wish this for DJ and for all golfers so they can putt to their fullest of potentials. So if DJ used this information, he would putt best he ever did and the thing is that his practice swing is RIGHT THERE.

You never mentioned grip pressure in this lesson ☹️
@golflessons
@golflessons 3 года назад
we have talked about this a lot in other videos; you want the pressure to be just enough to keep your “arm-putter unit” intact as a “capital letter Y” and feel like you are using the weight of this unit to roll the ball in the direction you are already on. Phil said the same thing about his putting yesterday when he said the reason he went to the claw was to remove the hit in his putts and use only “momentum” to roll the ball into the hole. Phil has Wisdom now! 😀👍❤️

@@golflessons I have been holding it too loosely trying to feel the weight of the putter. That has caused major issues. I worked on holding it on about a 7 out of 10 tightness yesterday and that really helped.
@golflessons

@@jdheelfan there you go! The arm-putter unit needs full integrity and it probably feels like 7/10 because of how light you were holding it.

That would have been better if you hadn't missed most of the putts 😎. Regardless, good advice and I'll give it a whirl. I could do with a more positive system for setting up and the checks mentioned. 👍 Thanks.
