Maybe Jordan Spieth should have tried this before the 2021 British Open! The Short downhill breaking putt is the most difficult and most often missed putt in golf. I've found doing the 3 things in this video help me make more of those and end 3 putts. Here's to never missing 3 foot putts again.

I’ve heard it many times ( don’t at the ball dropping in the hole ). I know it’s great advice but it’s so natural to want to look up and see the ball go in. Definitely will be practicing those tips. Many thanks

I have to admit, I thought of myself as a pretty intelligent and practical guy, but I was guilty of being careful to not miss a putt by going past the hole. He makes an excellent point, 6, 8 or 12" past the hole is still an easy putt, so there is nothing to be gained by putting the ball toward the hole and hoping to get it in and if not, leave it as close as possible. Might as well commit because if you do that correctly, you're still not going to have to worry about a 3rd putt and you will probably make more than you think! I'm playing tomorrow (quite possibly the last round of the season here in Canada) and I can't wait to get on the greens and use this new approach!

Looks to me that the last 5 foot putt starts outside the hole. On the courses I play it is not uncommon to have a foot or more break on a three to five foot putts.

That was an excellent video. I always had an issue with these types of putts. I used your 4 target system and never giving up the inside of the hole. I practiced this at home using a tee then the day I was going to play I spent about about 20 minutes on the practice green. Then went out and played. Holey Moley it made a huge difference! I normally average around 2.1 putts/hole on a round. Today I knocked that down to 1.8 putts/hole on todays round. I attribute a lot of that to this eye opening information. I still shot around my normal score but it wasn’t because of missing short putts! If this holds up I can focus attention on other areas of my game. Thanks for information!!

I shot an 80 on Sunday, which is fine except I didn't make a putt for birdie, did not get up and down once, and had 39 putts. I was disgusted with myself. I watches this video Monday night. I go out on Tuesday and shoot my lifetime best round, 5 birdies, 3 up and down, and 0 3 putts! You are the man! I will be watching all of your videos! Best lesson I ever had.

I think you're right. However if you commit to some speed to get you there and miss, you're going to be way worst off. I think it's better to shot for some spot if front of the hole and have an easier next shot
@misteroneputt
@misteroneputt Год назад
On a short putt I’m trying to make it, not set up an easier next shot. Go for die speed which is just to the hole, make speed which if missed goes 6-18 inches past, or charge speed which if missed goes 3 feet past. 3 feet past should be no sweat

The usual great tips John! Just one thing, over here, our side of the pond it's "The Open" - no British ! It was brilliant to be able to go and see it, we've waited 2 years, and I got to see Morikawa, Spieth, Dustin etc etc, and their putting was fantastic on very undulating greens ! putting as well as all those who made the cut live.

thank you so much for the response. (6 handicap) plumb bobbing, I have tried it, I understand the method. however, if I move my body slightly left or right, but still feel I (my dominate eye) am directly behind the ball in line with the cup, I can change the read of the break one way or the other. I am an engineer so I want to know how something works before I can believe it, or trust it. I ask many of my friends that are real good putters and have success with plumb-bobbing, but they cant explain why it works. they respond that it is magic? can you explain how a perfect vertical line (my putter) shows the break 10 - 30 feet away? if the cup was on a tilting platform with the horizontal axis level with the green running from my ball through the hole, and tilted one way or the other, the cup would not move left or right? I feel like someone unconsciously knows how the putt breaks and then makes the read confirm to their prior expectations. all explanations jump from close one eye and you see how much the putt breaks. I can stand on the practice green plumbing a putt that I verify breaks 4 inches one way or the other and can not prove it with the plumb bob. does a true read not depend on how accurate you are with your eye on the line from cup to the ball? please help Apart from plumb bobbing, is it true that we should only trust the read of a putt from below the hole? home course starmount forest country club, Greensboro NC, Champion Bermuda greens, fast and very undulating.
@misteroneputt
@misteroneputt 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comments and question. First I would say plumb bobbing is one of multiple methods and it works better for some than others…probably an eye and feel thing. Second, when I plumb Bob the hole doesn’t move but one side or the other of the hole appears higher or lower relative to the putter shaft. With regards to reading from the low side: it is easier to read the break from the low side no reason I can’t fully explain, but think about it this way. If you tilt a piece of paper or a book away from you at an angle where you’re looking upwards at it you can read it much better than if you tilted at an angle where you’re trying to read from above it and it’s tilted away from you going down. It’s something about the way our eyes work. Try it reading this comment on your phone tilt your phone back so that you’re looking uphill at it and it’s much easier to read then if you tilt it forward with the top towards your face and you’re reading downhill, same thing at sparring slope, and break on the greens in my experience.

I must be one of those that it does not work for. I tried the tilting cup analysis that you mentioned in one of your videos. and i could not determine that one side was lower than the other, from 20+ feet, maybe bad eyes? you are the first youtuber that I have heard mention that one side is lower than the other in relation to the shaft. Other RU-vid explainers show through the camera that the shaft is 3 or 5 holes distance from one side of the cup, actually showing where to aim the putt. I can not replicate this view with any accuracy. thanks for the discussion.
@misteroneputt
@misteroneputt 9 месяцев назад
I’ve seen those videos on RU-vid and they are not accurate. I don’t mean to disrespect anyone, but the only way to show with a camera what you see when palm bobbing would be if I put the camera directly over my eye. The problem is then I couldn’t see if the camera was actually seeing the right thing or not. It is very difficult to get good camera, shots, and angles for some of these things.
@mab49696
@mab49696 9 месяцев назад
if on a three footer you never aim outside the cup, I have got to think you are playing on slower greens than we are playing and on greens that are much less slope?
@misteroneputt
@misteroneputt 9 месяцев назад
I would say I play on greens ranging from 9-13 on the Stimpmeter...rarely slower. And we have lots of slope in the Las Vegas area...but I rarely aim outside the hole on 3 footers or less...the tendency is to bang them in from that distance. It takes confidence and accuracy to hit a 3 foot putt firm enough to go 5 feet past the hole but sometimes that is the best option.

NONE of this has anything to do with it. Here's your answer. I practiced 2 hours every single day under a 7 foot string. And I would make 40 in a row from six feet so I would go home. When I returned the next day I started out missing about 7 out of 10 again. I knew if I could figure out why, my short putt problems would be over. And I did find out why thanks to Ben Crenshaw. You have to use a very light grip and release (swing) the putter. What this does is put the putter into it's own inertia/momentum and takes YOU and your mistakes out of the putt. The blade has little propensity to twist. When you made those 40 in a row, the night before, it was all a result of rapid repeat timing. That is not there the next day until you putt for awhile. It is NEVER there on the golf course. This is also why Tiger uses his right hand only drill so much on 3 foot putts. He's training it to always be "released" and go unrotated under and not around. Once I understood this, I could make 100 in a row from six feet with my right hand only, just like Tiger. I went from a short putt schlump, to tour level ability. BTW - Some touring pros use the long putter FOR PRACTICE ONLY. They use the upper left hand only to prevent twisting, as they release unrotated under with the right hand below. It helps one to get the idea and burn it in. Former touring pro, Joey Rassett showed me this one. He uses it one hour a day practicing only. Had it not been for an automobile accident, Joey was destined for greatness. He was one of only 4 people under 23 to lead going into the final round of the U.S. Open.

It’s a great video, and great camera angles. But, you are playing much more break than you think you are. You are starting the ball outside the hole on most of those putts. If you set up a bunch of gates made out of tees to define your intended path, it would become obvious.

I have to say, if you have a 3ft putt that breaks 6 inches and the green is fast, if you hit the putt NOT to go more than 8 inches past the hole, you'll probably miss it even if you aim just inside the hole. I feel I'd have to either aim outside the hole and tickle it (won't go more than 8 inches past the hole) or, aim inside the hole and smack it (could end up 3ft past, but it will hold its line) Now, where's my tickling stick?
