I was taught how to use a skew chisel 70 years ago, and I still use it to round off a piece of wood. There's no better way of getting a finish that only needs a very light sanding. And the skew is far better that these chisels with replaceable cutters that only give a rough finish. More power to your elbow Tomislav!

There seems to be an argument over carbides wether they are cutters or scrapers.Scrapers need a burr to scrape cutters need a bevel to cut ,you can’t get a burr on a carbide tool but they do have a bevel.Many thanks for all the info and this close up video really does make everything clear.Please make more of these.

Wow! This is a fantastic video. It is only the second one of your videos that I watched. At the end of the first video I knew that I was watching a master at work. I noticed that your tools are pristine. There are so many factors involved in achieving excellence. You make 10 mm thick platters. There are people on RU-vid who can’t make anything thinner than one inch. Thank you for sharing your talent, skill and knowledge. I guessed that you could hear not just see what you are doing. I will guess that you also are aware of how the tool feels. Looking at the dust it is really fine which tells me you are using a delicate touch.

Well tommi, once again you have surpassed yourself. A purely instructional video that will most definitely help newbies and experienced Woodturners, or should help them turn better. I’d like your permission to use this video for teaching purposes to aid new turners. I’m a trainer at my wood turning shed, and yes we teach all of these techniques but this video is simply the best Tommi. You have become one of the best if not the BEST, instructor /teacher of woodturning. Certainly my favourite and friends of mine favourite woodturner. Keep up the good work. PLEASE PLEASE COME TO AUSTRALIA and give lessons and/ or demonstrations of woodturning. I probably won’t come back to Croatia , holidayed there a few years ago, what a wonderful country you now live in. I loved split and Dubrovnik. But we were on holidays. THANKYOU so much for your time taken out of your busy production turning schedule to plan and produce and especially edit all of these videos. All the best to you and family from down under in Oz.

I started shear scraping after seeing Jimmy Clewes. You mentioned the 'shine' going away when you shear scrape. Jimmy commented that no matter how good you are with your tools, you burnish the wood by rubbing the bevel. When you start to sand, first thing that you need to do is to cut through the burnishing. After hearing this, I really noticed that burnishing, and this is much more evident on dry wood than the green wood I always turn. One famous, unknown skew master commented, "the bevel should rub the wood, but the wood should not know it". It seems that I get burnishing no matter how light my touch is. One experiment I would have to make is with your detail gouge on the spindles. The inside of the flute looks pretty coarse. I wonder if honing/stropping the flute would make for a cleaner cut. I do always strop my skews. You do have lots of views of your tools as they cut, but I would be interested in seeing your body motion and how you raise and lower your handles as you cut.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Месяц назад
Hi sir, I have heard about this burnishing and that you have to remove it before sanding, however I never had issue sanding right after nice clean burnish cut.... And no matter how light the touch is it will Always leave shiny surface.... Mostly of speed that we use to cut wood...you can achive similar by using knife to cut with the grain, it will leave shiny surface.... So I'm not to bothered with that and if your pressure is to high on wood , wood will tell you that.... I was tough that way, wood always fight if you do it wrong. I will do body movement video soon😉 there is a lot of request for that.... I always joke around that we dance a lot around the lathe. I polished skew gouge with like 1000 grit wet and dry, I didn't spend much time on it as I didn't notice any differnce.... And I always use skew or this skew gouge without honing,so straight from grinder.... Works for me but I know a lot of turners hone which is ok if they like it.... That is beauty of turning....we each have different way😉
@robohippy
@robohippy 29 дней назад
With the skew, I thought I had solved my problems with clean cuts when I got a 1000 grit CBN wheel. I noticed that it would cut pretty good in one direction, like left to right, but not in the other direction. This was when I discovered stropping, and I think that came from Eric Lofstrom. With honing, you will leave a burr. With stropping with polishing compounds, you remove that burr. When you sharpen your kitchen knives, if you don't remove the burr, they don't cut very well, and every sharpening video will tell you that. I found out it makes a big difference. Eric took his skew and dulled it on the lathe bed, sharpened it on a 60 grit CBN wheel, and then stropped it. It took the hair off of his arm in one pass. When I started stropping, my shew cut fine in both directions, or at least equally well, I generally strop on my Tormek. You can buy 'polishing' compounds at the local big box hardware stores. If you get the black stuff, I think it is about 800 grit which does a good job. No clue as to what the Tormek paste is. I just use a piece of plywood, put a little light machine oil on it, and then rub some polishing compound on it. The old timers with the carbon steel skews would keep an end grain stump of some what softer wood around and stick the skew into it once or twice and that generally removed the burr. The burr from the more modern metals is more difficult to remove. One guy from England, I think his channel is Face Edge woodworking, he sharpens his bench chisels and plane irons on a Norton India stone, which I think is 400 grit, strops the blade, and then gets paper thin shavings with it. I don't think grit is as important as stropping. I have one stone which is 30,000 grit, and there is still a tiny burr left on it. I seldom use it though. Every one is different. In "theory" you should be able to get the same surface with both the skew and the spindle gouge. Stropping the flute may make a big difference. I am one who is blessed or cursed with having to experiment. I blame it on my dad who was an engineer...... If it ain't broke, take it apart and fix it anyway!
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 29 дней назад
@@robohippy we would also strop bench chisels as you use power of body and arms but never turning tools as we have power of the lathe.... Again I never got issue going left to right or vise versa, usually burr will be gone in few seconds on the lathe with skew , and we did do endgrain trick to remove burr but I find it just another step that is not nessesary,for me atleast.... Again I don't have issue with this but if it works for someone else then by all means do it.... There is no ONE correct way to do this👍

Simply outstanding. So much so that your (everyone's) mentor has commented. Excellent camera work. Excellent editing. Excellent narration. And you have even responded to an earlier commenter who wanted to see Tomislav; something besides hands? Just outstanding; I have recommended this channel for anyone who asks, and this is the reason. And, new to me was an excellent demonstration of, how do you call it, catches? I've heard of them but, of course, in 30-some-odd years of turning, never actually had one, so I couldn't really relate to the term. But now I have an idea of the concept. Thank you for clearing that up. His Highness, Greg, Emperor of the Western Hemisphere

Thanks, Tomislav. I'm new to lathe work, working on turnining spindles into walking stick handles. I've been trying different woods started with Oak, Beech and Walnut. On my laterst visit to the wood store I got adventurous and bought some exotics -African Blackwood, Padauk and Pink Ivory. Padauk is fairly straight forward, Blackwood takes a bit of work, Pink Ivory is a nightmare. Thanks to watching this video I was able to go back to my lathe and with a lot of care and attention to detail I'm managing to turn the Pink Ivory. Every wood is different and requires small changes to technique but with yours an Richard Raffan's videos I'll get there.

Great video! If you are looking for a good two part series, you could show beginners all the ways to 1. get your blank onto the lathe, and 2. all the ways to get a finished piece off the lathe. You make it look easy, but many beginners struggle with this, especially when doing boxes and other small items that are hard to grab both ways.

You've inspired me! I just got a grinder for sharpening and traditional tools and I'm excited to get everything set up to try. I've had a lot of fun turning with carbide tools, but it seems much slower than traditional gauges and leaves a much rougher surface. Your tips on how to use these tools and your other videos on how to shape and sharpen tools will serve me well!

Glad to hear about transition to tradicional tools as once you learn them you will have more fun... Take your time and just practice ☺️

Excellent video as always. I was practicing with the skew today and must have said “thanks Tomislav” a dozen times. One thing I’d like you to show us is how you hold the skew at handle as I find with a peeling cut it’s easy going right to left but feels awkward going left to right.

My woodturning instructor was afraid of the skew. I-was never taught how to use it, and this gives me hope that i can learn on my own. There seem to be some tasks that only a skew can do. Just dont turn it point first into the wood, right?
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 16 дней назад
Don't be afraid like your instructor as 99% its safe and only ruins wood.... You can use a point of the skew only for V groove or endgrain cuts, I have indepth 2 part videos about 2 months old that csn help you learn the skew....
