I was always taught not to tell people what you do nor what you want. The more information people have about you the more they can use it against you.

I can only speak from my experience, but I find that telling people what I want to do excuses myself from trying to achieve that goal. I get the "high" of telling people my goals instead of working towards them. It also makes it unclear in my head whether or not I'm working towards something to impress people or not. If I shut up and work, not tell anyone, I know deep down that I'm doing it simply because I want to. This sort of approach is backed up by the 48 laws of power, which is a great read

I always tell people honesty what I do for labor because I don't suffer from inferiority problems. I stay away from people who try to demean others because of what kind of work they do... we must remember that there is nothing wrong in what we do to support ourselves is the people that surrounds us that suffer from inferiority problems and low self-esteem

I hate that question. Asking someone what they do is just a way to judge them. Some people are so used to asking they aren't even aware that they judge on the answer, but they do. When someone asks me what I do, I usually just say "about what?" It usually gets people rattled. Then I'll change the conversation or just input a "what" into the silence and tell them what I do about.....substituting honey for sugar in recipes, or how I like to do the 'Barney' when I'm gettin jiggy with it; etc. If they continue to go back to that question I'll call them out and ask them why they want to know and suggest it's a judgment question and ask them if they are just wanting to judge me.

*Always ask for what you want. The worst thing another person can say, is no. The risk of not asking for what you want is never getting it.*

I can agree with this. During dog walking times I meet a lot of people and am never shy about what I do and what I intend. One person I spoke to, I told her that I was writing a book. Turned out she was/is a published author and was interested. I showed her my first chapter, she liked it, she showed it to her published, he liked it and the door has swung open. Being open about goals and plans worked/is working for me. There are of course, also people who have put my plans down but they really don't matter to me, after all, they have nothing to show for their doubt.

I mind my own business

I never ask people what they do. I usually wait for them to tell me and if they don’t it’s usually because we’re too busy talking about everything but what they do.

“What do you do?” “Oh, I’m ::inserts something I’m not:: “Whoa, really???!??” “No.” 🤷🏼‍♀️ What could go wrong?

You should never tell anyone your plans. People pry because they have no ideas themselves and just want to steal yours.

How about, "I'm currently a waiter, but I'm working hard to become a screenwriter?" Honest and still gives people who want to help you enough information to go on.

People don't ask me what I do...because I don't small talk with people.

Be bold be brave and lie and be delusional. No wonder people can't accept themselves and be responsible.

Now I feel terrible about telling a client that I love my job, and I don’t want to do anything else besides what I’m doing. Truth is, I hate my job and I rather be doing what I love then what I’m currently doing.

I always say As little as possible.

A: "What do you do for living?" B: "I'm president of the united states." A: "You just served me a hotdog ..."

I met a man who had been a kapo in the concentration camp. When the camp was liberated, each barracks took a vote of whether to execute the barracks kapo. He was spared. He had slowed down when I met him. He never spoke about himself. He asked questions of people and expressed interest in things in which they were interested. He served me as a role model. I don't discuss my personal accomplishments. I speak with people about their accomplishments.

Biggest scam artist questions . 1: where you from ? When you going back ? (This gives them the window of how much time they have. Also if your bags going where they want drugs to go . 2 : who's your family or friends ? Are you alone (How vulnerable you are ) 3: what do you do ? (Instantly provides your locations and how important you are or aren't ) 4: what do you like to do ? ( can you fight protect yourself or own guns )

I tend to ask both. "What do you do?" Then, "Do you like it?" Then, "What do you want to do?" The answers are usually vastly different. For myself, I don't like to tell people what I want to do because they often don't respect it. So to keep my privacy I just tell them what I do as a job. I only tell my desires and dreams to people I really, really, really trust. I used to give people more of a chance but after so many times of being discredited and judged, I just don't really want to anymore 😅 A soul gets tired

"My job is very boring I'm an office clerk" People judge you on what you do so I rarely open myself up to such judgement. I am more honest with those who do the same but I have no interest in selling myself until the time comes and I certainly have no interest in advertising my salary.

Never be ashamed of your hustle. Nobody will feed you if you go broke.

I'm from the north of England. Very working class. Almost nobody I know takes their work home with them, if you know what I mean. A lady I know married a Londoner and when we first met, he asked me about my job, and I politely advised him "we don't talk shop, up here". I'm fairly close with my family, and I call home every day from Tokyo. But if you asked them what my job was, they point blank wouldn't have a clue what the answer was. I mean if my family ever asked me what my job was, I'd tell them, but they just don't care, and I'm fine with that.

What do you do for a living? As little as possible.

When the hiring manager asked me what I see myself doing in next two year, I told him that I WANT his job. Guess what happens next. Sometime it's best to keep your goals to yourself. There are other people who don't want you to succeed.

Yeah but bro they usually mean what do you do for a living...it’s kind of just an understood thing, once they find out you don’t actually do what you just told them for an actual living or even make any money at all, their going to think your a phoney or desperately trying to impress them....tell em you work at whatever you do while you’re becoming whatever it is your becoming...that’s more accurate and respectful of their intelligence anyways...

Be yourself. Figure out what you love and do it everyday. Ignore what other people think, and you'll notice that the right people will begin to gravitate towards you. You'll also start to notice that you care less and less about what others think, because you're perfect the way you are.

I work at NASA but tell people I'm a used car salesman and not the nice cars but I sell the crappiest cars on the road. That usually ends the conversation.

In the book "How To Talk To Anyone" The author gives an example of what to say in a situation where you are asked about what you do. "What do you do?" "instead of saying i'm a writer" , "Say, I create fiction/nonfiction stories etc. for readers to emerse themselves in" "how much do you make?" "I feel I've got a pretty good grip on my finances currently." Check this book out word of caution she does get annoying but there are lots and lots of gems in this book just grab a highlighter and take out whats important.

Great message! I am fortunate that I am doing what I want to do, but you are totally correct most people focus on their current job instead of what they are building towards.

I've thought about saying what I want to be doing before, but have always gotten embarrassed or insecure and ended up just saying what I'm currently doing instead. A great reminder to stick to my dreams!

Telling people you're next moves is dumb 🤦‍♂️

This is only the second video of yours that I have seen, and I subscribed. Very good points. I have always hated the fact that most people, upon meeting most people, will ask, almost immediately: "What do you do?" As if that matters. As if the answer defines who I am. But now I'm thinking that, if I answer that question in terms of who and what I want to be, that changes the impact of the question. Oh, and on a side note, I'm a native Californian who moved out of California five months ago. In all of the conversations I have had in my new home, nobody has ever asked me "What do you do?" That doesn't change what I have gleaned from this video, though. It's more like a double bonus!

Be selective who you share this info with + beware of taking the energy away from actually executing on your desires.

Information given to the wrong people can lead to big problems, if I don’t completely trust an individual I respond, “that information is given on a need to know basis”.

This also plays into the law of attraction, if you believe in that. You're putting it out into the world that you are what you want to be, because saying "sorta kinda maybe" is just not believing in yourself and admitting that it's just a "hobby" when really if it's your passion it's a way of life. "Aspiring" counts as the real thing in my book because there is no moment or event that says "you're the real deal now" because that's different for everyone and every field, it's all about you and your journey, not what other people think is a "real so and so" or a "professional." For example, if you make art, you're an artist and so on, to some extent if you do it, you are it. And you have to be delusional if you want to chase your dreams because dreams aren't practical, dead end jobs are practical and realistic and they pay the bills. If you want to live the life you want, you kinda have to be crazy and live a somewhat unconventional lifestyle, you won't miss the safety and security of a boring career when you get to where you're going, trust me

My resume shows my accomplishments and also what I am looking for/want to do. When people ask me what I do, I tell them exactly what I currently do. If they want to know my aspirations, they should ask that question.

Balderdash! I once took a ride in a taxi in San Francisco. In conversation, the driver told me of his plan to open a martini bar, and that he had been working 2 shifts for 5 years to save money for this purpose. He now owns and operates a martini bar in San Francisco. And, he got it without lying.

My dream came true and I am doing what I always wanted to do. I don’t like telling people what I do because then they want to talk about it and they have no clue. So, I just reply “not much.”

This makes lot of sense!! When you say what you want to do as if you are doing it right now, it makes our SUBCONSCIOUS mind believe that we are doing that right now and it starts to attract all the possible ways for you to make your dream a reality!!

The thing is, people who ask "What do you do?"' are looking for your occupation or day-to-day livelihood, not what you want to do, otherwise they would have asked, "What are your goals?" or something similar.

This is so wrong that I can't even figure it out after watching it twice. When someone asks in casual conversation "What do you do for a living?" you answer with whatever your job is which pays the bills. Not your dream or fantasy career. It isn't meant to demean or insult the person. It is a way of learning about that persons live experiences and drive a conversation as the person asking may have a curiosity about that particular job. They may have worked a similar job in the past and share similar experiences. They may know someone in a similar career who can help the person they are asking to change jobs or move up in salary or career path. "Really, you are a waitress? That's cool. I have a buddy who owns several restaurants who is looking for experienced staff. I can get you an interview if you'd like." "Oh, you work at that restaurant? I was a dishwasher and busboy there when they first opened. It helped me get through college. Is old man Bill still managing the place?" The only thing rude is answering with a misleading statement like "I'm a screenwriter" when you have never written a anything which has been bought and put on screen. In fact, that is a sign of being a lair and from that point forward you loose all credibility.

Actions will always speak louder than words. And In a world full of deceit, your best answer is to just follow the heart. As for the rest, well... Do whatever helps you sleep at night. I know there are those people who constantly need someone elses approval of everything they do.

But... that cab driver is lying. Hes not a screenwriter, he's a cab driver with a fatuous day dream that interferes with his work. Youre telling people to emulate a city saturated with professional liars and manipulators. The key isnt dreams its discipline.

No. How about just truthfully answer the question that they asked. Simple. I don't think this video gave good reason to "Never tell" or much negative side to just answering the question. "Never tell people what you do... because... uh... no good reason really"

I think it depends on who's asking, what atmosphere & whether it's male or female. That's how I gage my response, I don't like to give to much information to someone I don't know.

Thank you. That was a really thoughtful presentation. I am hesitant listening to strangers online, but this makes sense. And I can verify from the experiences I've had. This actually affirms a few things for me going forward. Genuine words for once. Wow.

This is what I've always done (or tried to do). Here's some advice: It only works when all the people you're talking to are strangers. I've tried it many times when I'm meeting someone with my sister or a friend. I'll say, "I'm a writer," because that's what I'm working on becoming. My sister/friends will scoff and say, "No, you're not." Then it becomes unnecessarily awkward and, unless you're impervious to criticism and judgement, your confidence will be taken down a notch, again, unnecessarily.

This is such a great message! Last week, I was carpooling and I sat next to a guy. We started talking and after many topics later he asked me, what to I do? I said I'm doing a no-brainer job for a start-up. But ideally, I would like to train people on hospitality and customer service, etc. He gave me his name card and told me he's looking for trainers and that I should call him! So I encourage everyone to be bold and tell people what you want to do!

This message is awesome. To extend it further, telling others what I want to do keeps me accountable and builds my courage/mental strength. If someone deters me from doing it and says all the reasons why it's not possible, that's a sign asking me if I want to go through with this or not. This is the best way to keep yourself honest.
