My ex girlfriend had a repeated pattern of disrespectful behavior. She didn’t reveal it at first, but about two years in to the relationship, it became more and more frequent. When I reflect back, I see that this was how her mom spoke to her dad. I loved her but I refuse to live my life that way. Despite my repeated warnings for 10 months, that I won’t tolerate it, she chose to continue; needless to say, I did break-up with her. You’re absolutely right about respect. I was married for a long time. I blame myself for giving her the decision making authority on how our family and home would be run. In my mind, I had to be the bread-winner. I was too focused on that. Before I knew it, I was Homer Simpson to her and my daughters. Laughed at, tolerated, or ignored. When I tried to regain some respect, it was too late. Now I’m afraid I contributed to the world four more entitled, bitter man-haters. Young men, don’t forfeit your God-given authority as leaders of your family! They’ll thank you for it in the long run.

I think it's right that a person should assume autonomy in the sphere in which they have taken responsibility - I don't think you were wrong about that. Undermining and dismissive behaviour is another thing. With a mature partner it should be possible to discuss issues of the children and home without pulling the head of household card. Nipping disrespect in the bud is a tricky balance; I liked a comment above about how "banter" can shade into abuse and no-one wants to be humourless or oversensitive

I learned this in my teens and it has served me well in my mid life when I actually learned to apply it correctly. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything. Nothing drives a woman more nuts or eventually lets even the dimmest understand, eventually. When she starts nagging or talking trash, most especially in a derogatory stance, speak not a word, nothing! Turn your back to her and walk away. If she follows, continuing to nag, keep walking, if it takes you going into a room and locking the door, walking outside and up the road, into your car and driving away, just do it, not a word! Give her hours to stew, stay away. After a few hours, return, if she starts up again, shake your head, speak not a word and leave again. Repeat this as many times as it takes to either have her remain silent on your return and ask you to speak, she to listen. Tell her you are waiting for an apology for being treated like a child or animal. If she don't. repeat the walk away as many times as it takes to get the results you require. Once she is primed to actually listen and not berate, calmly, I mean calmly and firmly, explain that you don't respond to being talked to as a child or being berated as a errant dog, you are a man. You are a man and expect to be treated with respect, nothing less will do. She may hate you in the moment, she will respect, however. You, as a man, don't need love, you need respect. Until she learns this lesson implicitly, repeat it, she will get no results she wants until she acts in a respectful nature to you. THEN you can work on whatever it is she was nattering on about, never from position of subservience.
@nathanbutcher7720
@nathanbutcher7720 Год назад
It's actually pretty sad when you have to apply this in a marriage. You will win 100% of the time and she will eventually respect you. The problem is if you manage to cow her into silence, and if her ego is so huge that she resists apologizing, then relationship becomes irrecoverable. You're going to be in control of the marriage though fear, but sex won't be happening any more - at which point the marriage is dead anyway.

Nagging is often used as a means of making you undesirable to other women. It erodes your self confidence because you're always guilty of doing something wrong. It is also why you shouldn't listen to your woman if she says she loves your 'Dad-Bod' or beer gut. she doesn't. She just loves the comfort it brings her; knowing that another woman isn't going to pursue you and steal you away.

Nagging is a sign that sometime before the nagging, some smaller less toxic behavior wasn't nipped in the bud. When full blown toxic social behavior occurs, it usually occurs because you didn't control for the small stuff before it got big. Perhaps some of the banter your girlfriend engaged with has some veiled hostility or veiled disrespect behind it. I honestly feel that banter is the number 1 problem in our modern socialization, partially because it is poorly understood, and partly because it can very easily be used for veiled hostility. Banter can snowball into nagging, banter can snowball into social bullying, banter can be used to express disrespect or hostile emotions towards others under the guise of "busting someones balls", banter is arguably the most problematic of all the social behaviors, not because it is necessarily bad in all instances, but because it can be used to easily turn into something very bad because banter blurs the line between what is and isn't bad. Expressions like "I'm just messing with you", "I'm just busting your chops" are symptoms of the fundamental and very problematic problems with banter. Where does one draw the line between someone messing with you and disrespect. A person can very easily disrespect you and then lay the line down "I'm just messing with you". Banter is often used to blur the line between disrespectful and respectful play between adults. If someone has to explain what they are doing is not disrespectful, while they made you feel bad, they are actually just making excuses for their toxic behavior. I don't have patience for these sorts of people. And banter often operates as a vehicle for both friendly good natured fun, and as a vehicle for snowballing into toxic social bullying, nagging and other sorts of toxic behaviors at the same time. In my experience, I found that getting rid of banter actually gets rid of most of the other really toxic social behaviors, except for passive aggressiveness, which operates on a different strategic social strategy. It's not like I don't engage in banter at all, but I only engage in banter on MY TERMS, that way I have much more control over the social dynamics of what is going on and my social environment doesn't get crazy or out of control.

There are women that want to care for a man, which is completely natural and healthy, but there are also women that nag and try to correct what a man does, which stems out of disrespect and lack of confidence in the man's ability to play his role. Too true, if someone treats you badly and you let them get away with it your actually giving them permission to do it again.

Women can be unhappy with their lives or their own psych issues, even if the man is decent and respectful. If they are taking out their garbage on you- you are wasting your time.

My first relationship, the girl who took my virginity, brought me into “dating” who I was with for years, was extremely toxic and mental. This gave me the worst start into the female dating scene picking up The pieces of a broken heart while Dealing with this for years. Took me out of the scene for years, thinking that the mental nag and abuse of a women was the norm. It’s mental abuse and I refuse to Commit myself to another women who has these symptoms

Absolutely. Most men accustomed to believe that tolerating constant nagging arguing blame shifting is normal. It's not. In healthy functional relationships such behaviors are non existent. Hence it should never be tolerated.

Thanks, I loved this video. Every point was spot on. It's true, you're her husband, not her therapist. If you find that you're continually exhausted from your interactions, then she's draining your emotional reserves like a leech. Drop her. The term "codependent" was coined for situations like this. You're addicted to "fixing" her, she's addicted to being "fixed" and coddled.

My relationship from before was like this. The amount of disrespect I got given was a real eye opener. Literally these days I won’t put up with anything and it’s thanks to channels like these. At the end of the day I want a good life and I need team players. Romantic and non romantic relationships. You’ve helped me big time.

I told my wife before we were married. Marriage is a partnership. But in every partnership one partner has to be the majority stockholder. I will always have 51% of the shares when it comes to a vote because someone has to be in charge and break a deadlock. She didn't like it when I said it and I have had to remind her of it from time to time. But, someone has to be the ultimate decision maker, and have the final say, and in a healthy relationship it is the husband.

Your point on family life leading to accepting disrespectful behaviour is 100% on point but i want too add that this is also often pushed by tv shows with the "lazy father" stereotype and the nagging wife, it does really normalise this sort of behaviour especially for young people...

Same advice here is for your friends too. If they constantly and everytime you see them disrespect you even in a joking manner, they really aren't a friend worth keeping around. Sometimes for jokes it's ok, but if it starts to be constant you either tell them to stop it or just cut them off from your life.

When it gets to the point when i am crying or angry , or cussing her out that means i am getting ready leave the relationship. Because i have tried reason and softness and she is the one who is clueless and selfish and doesn't know how to treat people . To think you can maybe change a clueless or disrespectful woman is like thinking you can fix a relationship with a chronic cheater or drug addict. I have my limits and if my conversations about my reasonable boundaries how you treat me don't sink in then i know where the door is.

Validation at 5:00 where Alexander says "negative consequences for negative behavior" regarding parenting of children that I learned decades ago in college. I told my wife about it at the time and it went in one ear and out the other, because she wanted to be their friend. Excellent point he makes about not tolerating dysfunctional behavior. Problem is too many of us had an upbringing from one or both parents letting dysfunction reign at home. But his teaching here helps all of us become a much better person. I'm binge watching.
