For your chance to win an Airstream Caravel and an all-new Ford F-150 in support of a great cause go to www.omaze.com/n...
In an inventive redesign of her 19th century Italian apartment into a multifunctional home and office, Architect Catarina Pilar Palumbo transformed the formerly gloomy space into a bright and colourful home. With the addition of a blue steel loft, she was able to elevate the bedroom and divide the apartment into living and working spaces, exposing the relocated kitchen to more light. This concept continues into the bathroom where a distinctive faux LED skylight washes the room in a soft glow that extends outwards into the rest of the apartment, accompanied by the bold color of the home's blue features.

This sponsorship seems inappropriate for those who are interested in small spaces, which usually means people who want to make less of a negative impact on the Earth we share. I don’t think a Ford 150 is going to accomplish that.

I wouldn't personally live there but I can see the potential of it. It's amazingly well designed for her needs! She uses so much space for her office that you would think everything else would be cramped, but... no. It just all works beautifully together. If I had to visit her for business, I wouldn't have the feeling I'm stepping in her home either, which is a huge plus for the client. Well done!

I think it suits her needs perfectly!! The place must seem professional and modern-chic to clients visiting this office, so the color choice really brightens up the space in an unconventional way. I’m sure if this place was to be just a home the color of the mezzanine structure would have been different, even the material. But as this being an office, it’s not too industrial but really feels like a workplace. Great example of a small living customized to fit individual’s needs!

This could easily be adapted to a normal house by enlarging the kitchen with full size appliances at the office space. Laundry and closet can go where the small kitchen is, the meeting area then will be a large living area with comfortable seating. The architect has designed the space for her own needs but showed us lots of possibilities with the way she maximised the space

I was thinking about that too, but then I realized that, to use a transparent shower door like that you got to be diligent and always scrape the residual water on the door every time you shower or it will look ugly very soon with the water deposit buildup. Or if you are lazy, just always move the door to the shower side after opening it so the moisture won't be trapped in the storage area.

One of my favourite ones because I work from home and it made me realise how many hours I spend working inside and how many doing other things. It is a fact: if you work from home, this has to become the function where you should seek the most comfort and convenience. I love other NTS videos but when I see them pulling out table tops that are tiny or pulling up stools as potential working chairs I always know that these spaces would not work for me. Thanks Caterina for showing us your space.

I don't know if it's true, but I heard that first floors in some tenement houses were built with the heighest ceiling to provide enough light, comparing to higher placed floors. I used to live on a first floor in a tenement house in Poland, the ceiling was above 4 meters. But I've never been in higher floors to see if their flats' ceilings are the same height or not.

Where I live (Florence, Italy) building a non-removable, structural mezzanine like that (using steel beams) would be illegal, with a 4/4.5m ceiling. At least 2.4m for each "floor" would be the minimum requirement in terms of height.

If it was 'a home' then you would just layout the office section differently splitting it into another bedroom or living space upstairs or decorating that area differently making the office a living area and the living area in the back another bedroom or bigger office. Despite its small size, the apartment has become wonderfully airy and light. The materials and colors are so appealingly combined! Terrazzo flooring, some wood, tiles and steel all go together so well. Blue and white like the sea and fleecy clouds and above it the bed like a bird's nest high up. And here and there bright yellow flashes like the sun. I love the bright yellow flower pot on the blue floor! As you can see, my thoughts have already moved in, haha. Because I'm no longer so light-footed, I want a staircase made of blue steel along a wall instead of the ladder. The bookshelves may follow the stairs up, making it easy for me to get to the books and into bed. How I can clean the ceiling lamps or replace a lamp, I don't know, maybe there are also wings or a good ghost to do it for me. Thanks for the nice video, it puts me in a good mood.

I really like the colour selection and maximization of the space, but to me personally this appartment seems more like an atelier where you can easily spend the night from time to time/have some guests stay over, rather than a fulltime living appartment. The steel grid of the sleeping floor seems uncomfortable to walk on with bare foot and the sleeping area as a whole doesn't create a cozy atmosphere due to the open railing, same with the Futon couch. I suppose, I'm missing cozy areas as a whole. That being said, most of her modifications are superb! The bathroom looks so modern and elegant despite the small space. Well done!

Yes. Even though I love this, I would need some sort of blind to lower next to the bed to offer a sense of coziness. And a better and bigger sofa-bed. Plus armchairs for when I’d have guests over. Fantastic design though and my thoughts are not criticisms but rather personal preferences.

It can't just be me who would feel self conscious about getting dressed over the metal grate walkway right? That would also be a pain to stand on, bear-foot, after waking up...

was thinking the same, although a few mats would do the trick i guess

The space optimisation is amazing! But a bit too hightech for my taste. I would probably put wooden boards on the top floor to give some warmth
