Located on the top floor of a Heritage listed Victorian terrace house, Camden Loft is one three apartments created by subdividing the former family home. Tasked with keeping the open plan feel but providing different spaces for privacy, Craft Design made full use of the space's volume by inserting a central joinery cube which houses the plumbing and bathroom. While also acting as a platform for a new mezzanine area that contains the bedroom and home office. A floor-to-ceiling shelving and storage unit runs the length of the loft, first appearing to be a gallery wall but on closer inspection, it also houses the hidden steps leading up to the mezzanine area, where a Japanese style bed lies cleverly concealed.

Let somebody life there and it gets messy, dusty and soon it will look completely cluttered. Who wants to clean that all the time. As someone *with* mobility issues I was genuinely shook by that staircase. While not as steep as ladder rungs, those treads are way narrower than a traditional staircase. This is a terrible design for storage. It's more like for a magazine wow-factor than for actual usage. One thing in common you would see in tiny houses is that people use drawers instead of open cabinets because they are more efficient in terms of organization and storage space, which is quite a common knowledge in tiny house design. Also, 54 sq meters is considered big for a condo or a flat in my city (and I guess most other big cities would be the same). I've seen smaller condos with more functionality and storage than this. A 54sq meter condo is typically a 2-bedroom in my city, and is typically on the higher spectrum of the price range. These open shelves make this big apartment looks smaller and more cluttered than it actually is.

Very nice. It's both stylish and practical. The furniture and layout of the living room seems awkward though. Putting the flat screen on one of the long blank wall spaces (between the windows and balcony or the bathroom wall) and rearranging the existing furniture or getting new furniture more fitting to the space might help. Putting a small desk in place of the current TV table with a view out the balcony would make for a better office space than right in front of the bed upstairs. That space could instead be used for closet space for clothes and linens (something I did not see a lot of in the apartment). It could be built-in or filled with a shallow dresser, wardrobe, or vanity. At least that's what I would do were the space mine. Cheers!

@B__C__
@B__C__ 2 года назад
@@rhemmie2825 Yes. There is a closet downstairs, but who gets dressed or even rummages through their underwear drawer in their entry hall? (And what's her phone number? 😊) There needs to be another place to store clothing--aside from coats, and away from the odd broom, and snow shovel. The desk/workspace works better, I think, next to the balcony on the main floor anyhow, it gives you the breeze, a view, and the space to get up and have a walk around when you need it. Plus, the coffee shrine isn't down a flight of stairs.
@rhemmie2825
@rhemmie2825 2 года назад
@@B__C__ I get that. BUT, they worked with the space they had. It's a small space and sometimes, as in many tiny home videos I've watched, the closet does not always wind up in the bedroom. (I currently get dressed in my living room every day, right near my front door. No one is here when I do, so where it happens really makes no difference.) Also I agreed about the vanity desk thing so there wasn't a need to restate that. I'm thinking they choose to keep that entire storage wall that goes up from the kitchen cabinets into the loft area and down the stairs into the living room as primarily open shelving for the visual impact. To have taken the area up there and enclosed some for closet space would have changed that.
@MarySanchez-qk3hp
@MarySanchez-qk3hp 2 года назад
This is the only tiny space I've ever seen online that's actually comfortable. I worked at the school of architecture at my local university, so I can see a few of the subtle tricks being used here. Architects in my humble opinion seem usually to have a penchant for making things too complicated and expensive for the rest of us in these videos, as if they invent stuff just to showcase their abilities and to prove how complicated they can make things. You can make anything interesting if you throw enough money at it. But most of us can't. I do wonder about a few things. I'd need something like a nightstand or shelf within reach, by the bedside, to store things for use in bed, and I'd need a lamp of some sort to read in bed. I see he's got the outlets and ledges for it. Maybe he just decluttered things temporarily for the camera. Another issue I've been made acutely aware of, over time, is that I've never seen one of these living spaces that was accessible to someone disabled or older. The disabled are are least 25% of the population... and more, if one counts people that are simply elders. Everyone becomes disabled at some point in their lives, whether temporary or permanent. What I've learned from the job I had and in my own life, is that most architects exclude or ignore the disabled, unconsciously, and actually don't know much about Universal Accessibility or the ADA, unless they go out of their way to specialize in Universal Accessibility architecture, no matter which country they reside in. And that's a shame, because as I said, architects like to showcase their talents and ability to solve problems in clever ways.
@mhm9468
@mhm9468 2 года назад
That's because of the issue you touched on earlier in your comment- disabled people are more likely to be poor and so just don't factor in to the thoughts of people designing things for the ridiculously wealthy.
@ginat.8064
@ginat.8064 Год назад
@@mhm9468 disabled people are not necessarily poor. You can have worked all your life and become old and disabled that way. You can be a wheelchair user and still do most office jobs any walking person can do. these are just examples. The assumption that disabled people are poor is just ignorant.
@mhm9468
@mhm9468 Год назад
@@ginat.8064 the majority of them are, just because there are a minority of luckier people who become disabled later in life/have managed to save enough to cover the costs or who are born in to wealth, doesn't negate the facts. There are statistics to back it up. The world is disproportionately tailored towards the able bodied and for many, being disabled has a massive impact on the person and their families earning ability. Resources to help are only available to those with the ability to access them or someone to advocate. Too many people turn a blind eye to the struggles of disabled people in a society focused on what you can earn, its dehumanising and when people try to pretend there is no issue it doesn't help.

Can't say I expected to like this, but then I loved the way each little room felt! Little details I loved in this space: - built-in bookshelves that completely fill the cathedral vaulted ceiling - the dark reflective backsplash in the kitchen - the colorful entryway shelving, and the color scheme of the apartment - the trendy kitchen light - the monkey hanging in the kitchen - the owner's efficient wardrobe - the full sized dining table - the "temple" dedicated to something the owners love (coffee) - the recessed, LED-lit bathroom shelf - the rocker shell chair (I have it too, and it fits this space way better) Things I would change if I lived here long term: - add a minimalist white or clear railing to the stairs for safety - separate the office from the bedroom somehow. (a) integrate it into the livingroom? (b) add pocket door covers to the office space, and have art on those cabinet doors to blend into the look of the built-in bookshelves. - add a stool to the balcony - create a more substantial headboard or wall design for the head of bed - replace bathroom sink with a wider and more modern bowl - balance out the color saturation by adding one or two large art pieces to the walls in the empty walls opposite the bookshelves Thank you NTS as always!

This is one of the best designs I’ve seen so far. I love the use of space and how large this small space feels. The sleeping loft is genius as is the bookcase wall that hides the staircase in plain sight! Great job!

I'd like to see small spaces applied to families with several children. We really want to live in a minimalist way, but these apartments always seem catered to singles, or couples with no children.

Yeah, usually not the audience for spaces under 50sqm. In places like London, a significant number of units is occupied by a single person, so you can see the appeal.
@Tashax405
@Tashax405 2 года назад
Agree it's good to see some more family ones! The architects in this ep sounded like they wanted to turn all the family houses in London into tiny apartments - which actually makes the city less livable for families
@silvasilvasilva
@silvasilvasilva 2 года назад
@@Tashax405 Given a third of households in parts of the UK are occupied by single individuals, you can see why. There's no end to the demand for this kind of unit, specially in places like London. If the supply was anywhere close to the demand, that number would be more like 50%.

Wow! Love this specious flat which doesn’t require you to pack up the furniture at the end of day! The layout is both open and beautiful, you would not feel boxed in! The staircase is perfectly hidden with the open shelves which is very clever, love how you used that bit at the star of the video! The bright yellow adds a nice kick to the whole design. I’d love to live here, but I’d turn some of the open shelves into more functional storage spaces coz I don’t have so many things to display! And get a bathtub in! Love it!

I lived in a bedsit in Camden Town in the late 70's. An attic room , no more than 10 square metres. If I remember rightly , there were 8 different families with one room each sharing one bathroom. Never too small !

I love the layout. Love the shelving. It is much needed storage that is open and can be made into a feature. Must cost about £700k though in Camden. Maybe more.

Curious if the stairs going up to the flat can or are being used as storage? They would be perfect to store extra linens, bedding, shoes etc… within the space.

That wall with open storage including steps to the bedroom is BRILLIANT. Not only does it hide the stairs but it gives you easy access to the shelves on the wall. This approach would work even if there were no loft area that the steps were leading to. It would be worth it just to make the higher wall storage more accessible. Sadly, I only have a 9' tall wall to work with.

Everything looks good and I like the layout very much. but stuck in the point where I believe in Buddhism In which the room has two Buddha statues that are placed on the stairs. which is clearly below the head For me, it's a huge sin. I suggest you reposition it best on the highest point of the shelf, or anywhere higher than your chest when walking.

Wonderful design, but there is a huge problem with the placement of the statue of Buddha, you do not walk on top of Buddha or any other God really day in day out. That’s a huge sign of disrespect. Hope the owner will see this and move it elsewhere.

Just go to any Buddhist temple, or go to all of them, and see where they place the statue of Buddha. Always at a place of respect and usually elevated.
