Set in a small block of 7 apartments in Setagaya ward in Tokyo, Small Design Studio’s Kumiko Ouchi re-designed this small apartment into a combined home and work space for her partner and her cat Cochi. By removing most of the interior walls, Ouchi opened up the space and created areas that are connected but also function independently. Placing the bedroom at the back of the apartment for optimal quietness and privacy, and an office space in the hallway that leads to the open plan living and kitchen area. The living room, which is a step lower than the rest of the apartment, contains a custom built 2.2m long window bench seat and a bioethanol fireplace. The adjoining L-Shaped kitchen with accompanying dining table is made from wood finished with water resistant plastering, giving it a concrete-look finish. With this simple, warm and comfortable home Ouchi has designed a space that feels more spacious than its 46m2 footprint and is truly attuned to the lifestyle and needs of its inhabitants.

Love how personalised the design choices are and also the storage. Often I watch these and think "yes it's very pleasing, but where's their stuff?". We all have "stuff" - books, sheets, cat litter tray etc that don't look appealing but need some place to go. This design has places for "stuff" that don't impact on the visual appeal of the main accommodation. Love it. Much more realistic.

You should check out her other works, it’s functional and yet absolutely beautiful!! a little side note…As for whether you’d call 46m2 small or not in Tokyo…well for 2 ppl a lot of us would call it ‘an adequate size’, so I personally don’t think it’s completely off to say it’s small… not tiny but yeah it’s on the smaller side

A lovely space and a lovely use of color. So much storage too. I love sunken living spaces, and the daybed, and fireplace look both pleasing to the eye and comfortable. I think I might be afraid of stubbing my toes on the step up from the living room though. I love the office/hallway (so cozy), the balconies (so open to the sky), and most of the kitchen, though I think I personally would rather have some of the appliances in places easier to access. The walk-in storage next to the front door is nice as well, especially if you make use of bicycles though the narrow entry hall might hamper that some. Very warm and cozy for an inner-city apartment.

They started with a pretty good apartment to begin with, with windows on 3 sides and 2 balconies, one of them a rooftop balcony. But I really appreciate that the designer Ouchi and her partner decided to renovate their 70’s apartment. Most people don’t do that here because of fear of earthquakes in aging apartments. Japanese apartments of this generation have a raised bathroom, because there needs to be space for plumbing under the bath. Typically, bathrooms are installed as a unit, and this one is too. It’s standard. What is unusual is that designer, Kumiko Ouchi was able to raise the floor of the kitchen & move it’s location, presumably by running the plumbing around to the original kitchen location under the raised floor which extends from the kitchen to the study area. Brilliant! What designer Ouchi has done well is to integrate the raised floor of the bathroom and laundry with the raised floor of the study area and bedroom. She’s come up with some other good ideas too. The storage area near the entry and the pantry are placed well. I like how she’s put the commonly unsightly rice cooker drawer around the corner with the fridge. And she’s made an improved solution to the bathroom and toilet areas which could not be moved. The more I look at it, I think great job!

I like the clean and simple design but I wouldn't call myself a minimalist because I do like having some ornamentation and touches of whimsy. I have seen designs here that appeal to me and others that are just too barren. This falls under my preference for simple and clean but still homey and cozy. I think it's the warm colors and use of natural materials (like wood) that keep it from being too stark.

But I must add, coming from Mumbai, India, the definition of "Small" is very different for various people. For example, this beautiful 495 sq. ft. apartment for two is considered small. But where I come from, many would consider this home as big. In Mumbai, families of 4 accommodate smaller spaces than those shown in NTS videos. I'd really love if we could get Meter measurements of places in the layout overview at the beginning to get a sense of how big the rooms actually are. The description says 46sqm but I have a really hard time belieiving this given I'm in a 50sqm apartment and this place just looks objectively larger than that. I've noticed this on a few videos. It could certainly just be a visual illusion and the actual rooms are smaller than they appear, hence it would be good to have the actual dimensions of each room and corridor.
@Ron1nVsEverything
@Ron1nVsEverything Год назад
@@bebenut123 Could be, but just looking at the actual available floor space alone, it looks bigger. It seems to be a very grey area in general in terms of how it is measured etc. For example, 6 identical apartments all in my building on different floors have been advertised at various times for sale all with different square meterage listed. Very confusing.

i really thought it was concrete, but then she said it was made from wood... and i was like... "what...? woah" i like this apartment. love that floating sink in the toilet. it looks pretty and the use of ambient light makes the toilet space seems really serene. the only thing i don't like about this place is the office chair. it looks uncomfortable. i couldn't imagine working for hours sitting in there, but that's personal preferences😅

You've done a wonderful job with the space available! I love how you have made use of nooks and created storage where possible. The soothing color scheme adds to a feeling of tranquility. Above all, I appreciate that this episode is of a place where people live day to day (in a small place) and are not afraid to show how they use it. ...was wondering if anybody has knocked their head on that protruding shelf in the kitchen above the stove... and can you make your bedroom dark?
@largemarge1603

@Con, We prefer our sleep zone to mimic the interior of a cool comfy cave. For the health of circadian rhythms, the sleep zone must be dark. Accordingly, we have zero windows in our sleep zone.

I like the minimalism of the space and the 2 terraces. But for me, the living room felt cold and soulless. I think if she had carried the look of the office space with it's wood floor, wood desk and bookshelves into the living room it would've added some warmth. Also, for me, losing a bedroom was not a good idea from an investment standpoint. I would've turned the 2nd BR into an office/guest room, and created the kitchen where they have the office area now.
@largemarge1603
@largemarge1603 Год назад
@think, Disagree. Based on our experience, segregation of tasks leads to 'I need to be here to do that' syndrome, and is counter-productive... diluting the effort and reducing effectiveness. And inevitably, increasing stress because 'I need to be over there to do this!'.
@jc3drums916
@jc3drums916 Год назад
That's exactly how the apartment used to be (re: kitchen and 2nd BR). Renovating the apartment the way they did not only made the kitchen slightly larger (which I assume was a priority for them, since she said they loved to cook), but also more comfortable by 1) being able to have a small dining table, and 2) removing some walls and opening up the space. Also, worrying about real estate as an investment is a typically American mindset. Not everyone thinks that way, and considering how difficult it's become to afford a house in many parts of the US, fewer people should. Some people would rather make their home as comfortable as possible for however long they live there.
