New 2019 BMW M135i XDrive Review - Really A Better 1 Series?!

No joke this is the simplest and yet the first car to ever hit me over 100 km ... I have @ 2013 Audi A5 Tfsi... it really left me with my mouth open ..this car is a beast

This is a great car for people who never had a M135i or M140i before (if all they cared about was the engine and RWD). If you never experienced the l6 then you'd be very happy with this car. In isolation it's a very decent car. It's basically BMW's answer to the AMG A35.If the l4 isn't your cup of tea stick with the last generation of M135i or the M140i.

Test drove a 120d xdrive and the interior is amazing, love the rear end look. Hopefully we'll be picking it up next weekend

What many don't consider is the majority of the time when youre not on it, having that 6 cylinder engine is so much more satisfying, smoother and special. OK so the 140 can get a bit messy on the limit ( I've got one ), but adding some decent suspension and LSD solves all that without spending silly money. That B58 is a classic..

The looks are better then the previous 1 series. Wanted to buy the m140 but didnt because its ugly. Now im going for a second hand M2, a premium selection one.

Cabin space has been vastly improved in this car Stef , Sacrifice engine size and you will get more comfort inside with amazing torque levels .

The front ain’t so nice, I totally agree. However it does have an LSD in the front which helps a lot on the cornering

I've just ordered one to replace my M140. Going to miss that B58, but can't say there will be much more I miss about it. Interior of the new one is such a nicer place to be. 140 is used as a weekend toy, the 135 will be used for commuting and a family wagon. They're different cars, once I learnt to look at this as a different car my mind changed. Imo they should have named it something different though.

Customer that comes to my work has just bought one at the weekend then his son came in yesterday and said he's picking one up tomorrow 🤐😎

Price wise considering the extra tech compares well with the R and A35. Add a Black grill from BMW M sports accessories (coming soon) and I reckon it will be a great everyday hot hatch.

Funny enough in expecting mine in July of this year. Dealer said apparently it’s the 22 Model year which has had some “tweaks” to its suspension, better sounding exhaust etc. no changes to the outside or in cabin. I didn’t believe the sales guy just thought he was talking BS, checked out and it’s true, carwow have a page stating this as fact!!! So can’t wait to get mine as the one I tested was an early 21 reg demo admittedly kitted out to the max… should get mine 20/07/22 😎

Stef. How would you say it compare with the JCW Clubman you drove recently?

just got rid of my 2 series coupe and switching into one of these. Got one in misano blue with tech pack & Msport plus pack on order. Had various bmw m-sports for last 15+ years but where i live out in the sticks, i need that awd. Gone with the 19" upgraded alloys, but that omits the adaptive suspension (apparently, the adaptive wont work with 19's), so i'm hoping the ride is ok as i'm used to adaptive for last few years

As time goes this design will that indeed people don't know what they want until they get

I like this over Golf R yet 140i more fun but time moves on and 1 series now competes with new A - we now need an A45 like version :)

Great review, I borrowed one for a couple of days from local dealer and overall loved it. Savage up-shifts in sport mode too, really top quality interior finish and design, plus properly planted traction. Didn't like the interior sound pumped in but found the setting in the idrive and turned it off. Loved the head up display and self park system on the tech pack (demo car had this). So; Bought one! It's coming end of December and I really can't wait. Not as nice sounding as my old m135i (3.0 6 pot) or my last bmw (m240i), but it isn't meant to be and I can tell any doubters this, you could never put the power down in the old car like this unless it's warm and dry, plus it did 38mpg on my work run, my old m135i.... let's just say didn't lol great review, thank you!

I’ve gone for an S3 :) 4cyl. 2.0t 300hp S-tronic , they seem to be similar now performance and price wise

does it have Oil temps to see how far can you push it on track days ?

You didn't mention torque-steer. Is it calmed down by the 4WD system?

The front side profile looks like the new A class the back looks like the new ford focus. I have just got the focus st and as standard the car gets adaptive cruise control, heated steering wheel, even if you have all upgrades which would take the price up to £35,000 granted the power is not the same but it would get you £10,000 if you brought the focus st to remap the car and make it as fast.

I liked this colour but free seeing in it the flesh it looks more blue than grey , so I went with mineral grey in the end

How does it compare to the Mini JCW Clubman that you drove with petrol Ped? He's just gotten hold of that Mini for the next 3 months!! As for the front of the car, it looks like an angry beaver! But it's not unpleasant to look at. Great review Stef :-))...

As an ex M135i facelift owner I’d definitely have one. I can get a good deal through work too £361 down and £361 a month. The only pack I’d go for is the one with the 19” wheels. Went high spec on my Audi and now it’s worthless at only 2 years old, so much so even the Audi dealer told me to voluntary terminate.

It’s a rocket. The only thing wasn’t sure on was the seats.

It's not an ugly car, but the F20 LCI M sport is still way more beautiful and aggressive from the exterior. And RWD is what made the 1 series unique in its class. The new 1 is the better overall more advanced car but has become a generic product suitable for "most" people.

The more I see this car the more I like but probably not enough to dismiss the older M140i

I think people need to stop comparing the new m135i to the old m140i. It’s not out to replace m140i

What is the price for the m135 in this video?

my car has an earlier version of this engine and it makes a far better sound, not as cultured as a straight 6 but enjoyable in its own right. Despite the new motor being more powerful, they seem to have completely ruined the sound, hopefully the aftermarket can fix it.

The issue BMW will have is they punted out far too many of the M135 and M140 with massive discounts which will make the new model look expensive. The previous model was far cheaper than the S3 and even cheaper than a Golf R in some cases and that is no longer likely to be the case. You would be mad to buy one now as I wold expect heavy discounting in a year or so

it looks better than the old 1. In the right color I get cready and want one. For me it combines speed, handing , a relative not to big car, right design en style. I would go for the 2 liter Diesel 4wd.

It may not be a 140i but it has a great engine still.

I’ve owed a 140 for coming up to 3 years, 60k miles now and was always adamant I wouldn’t be interested in this new 135... but kudos to you, your video has made me think maybe I should check one out. Good vid, have subscribed 👍

I am from RECIFE in Brazil South America and to me this car sounds like a jcw mini, Also at high speeds I have heard that it’s a little unstable I would say, however it does does get to 260km/h but I also think we are not going to be getting too much from this engine as it seems that bmw has stretched it too much...

What’s your opinion on the guilietta tbi cloverleaf? For how cheap they are it looks too good to be true lol. It’s the same engine as your 4C right?

Hate to disappoint but a lot of information mentioned here is incorrect. - Adaptive cruise is a stand-alone option, not included in any package and the digital dash is not standard across all models, it’s part of technology package 2.

Nice vib bro but as a profesional driver myself I would say keep both hands on the steering wheel

I had a bmw 335d xdrive as a daily, mapped to a safe 380bhp and 580lbft and the xdrive was rear bias so it would misbehave if you pushed it. I was then in a position I could afford a petrol hatch along side and bought a a45, awd 380bhp, lovely inside! But it was dead! It was quick, but no drama. Even on a stage 2 at 440bhp It just felt like a quick daily like the 335 did and I had such buyers remorse. There was no sense of occasion. So I traded it in for an m140i and it's a completely different animal to these 2.0 front bias cars. Yes the inside is leaps ahead and the styling is quite nice. But getting rid of the b58, zf gearbox and with essentially a knock off xdrive as a true xdrive will still get playful as this won't, its a complete waste of money for me and I'd be bored in a day. It's a quick daily, it's not raw and has no sense of occasion. Bmw would of had people queuing out the door to buy this if they had of kept the b58. It's probably the slowest of the 2.0 competition with less tuning potential.

To reference a certain mr catchpole we need to stop the obsession with the 0-60 times top speed, etc its about how much fun and enjoyment you can have from driving a car- see fiesta st or transit van both great fun to drive and weather it makes you want to go the long way round on your journey just for the sake of it which for 95% of us for 95% of the time is commuting grind with flashes of fun in short bits.

I think there are many new things to like about this car however, the grill and consequently the front, is not one of them.

the problem with this car not just the front but its become the norm as a s3 / golf r / a35 the m140i with that b58 engine and all that torque going threw the rear wheels made it diff from all the awd cars. the l35i is ok but not for me. m140i all day pure music

Surely can't be selling many of these purely based on their finance deals. You're talking 500pm with 500 down which compared to the m140 at 359 pm is silly. That coupled with its marmite looks will hit sales numbers. Hopefully they will heavily discount in the future. You can get a x3m or x4m for 550pm 550 deposit lol.
