I'm going over the difference in acclimating an adult snake vs a baby snake in this video. I'm also doing a snake unboxing and then we're cutting to a week later when I find out my new snake has problems...

I agree! I am also researching to get my first ball python and Bob and Emily from Snake Discovery have been very informative. While I've gotten info from many others as well, these two are the ones that I vibe with their energy the best and they've filled in a few gaps. Bob's the only one I heard even mentioning child- and cat proofing the enclosures, the latter of which will be important for me since I have two curious cats, one of which will check out literally anything new...or even an old thing moved to a different location. XD

Another great example of why quarantine is part of best keeping practices. I really feel for people in the past that didn't have access to the "common sense" measures we take for granted today and for people today who don't have access to a good vet with experience with reptiles. It's great you have such a good vet and you were able to get your snake treated asap. It's a bummer she was infected to begin with, but I'm glad to see from your previous comments that she recovered well. Thanks for another great video. Best wishes.

Thank you so much! Yet a super video. I'm sorry he had RI already from the start. We got a 5 year old ball python a couple of weeks ago. He's the chillest pet I've ever had, and communicates pretty understandably. Luckily the previous owner was able to give me the information I needed about the snake's life. I kept him in the vivarium for one week before taking him out. He doesn't seem to have any issues with people, and have started to 'ask' to come out when he wakes up. 💗🐍💗

I wish this video had. Ome out 2 weeks ago. I picked up a new adult snake and was unaware that he didn't need to have as much time to adjust. I got very lucky the seller contacted me to remind me of feeding schedule and his dislike in eating larger meals. Was able to tell him he was in shed ( he is a pied and seriously turned a peach/orange color ) so I was leaving him be. The seller said no need he loves to be handled even in shed. He still hasn't eaten, but he did shed and is so stunning white now. Great video as always.

First video I've seen and I'm subbed! This channel will be huge one day soon! mark my words here! This was such a great video and info I needed as well! I'm a new first time snake owner and I have 2, one I bought as a baby and the other I bought her as a full grown 4 year old adult proven breeder /she had one clutch of 9 perfect eggs her breeder told me! *(though I bought her for a pet and I don't ever intend on breeding her) both are normal ball pythons (my personal favorite) I hope to add a third at some point because I'm snake crazy now after previously having spent my entire life petrified of snakes, now I love them! It took two years of watching reptile RU-vidrs and I learned so much and my mind was eventually changed. My baby Keira was the one I bought first and she's a sweetheart! My older gal bit me day one, and it was quite the love tap believe it or not, lol So since I'm so new to snakes I know it was my fault she bit me but it has messed with my confidence with her now so do I don some gloves when I handle her for now ? I think her confidence needs to grow too! We're working on it by my getting her out for just a few minutes each time. I'm super chill with my first snake (baby Keira) she's the sweetest little thing ever! with my other girl Emma it's just going to take us both some time I think :)

Hey Bob, how do you clean your bioactive setup? I mean the background and things you can't remove easily? And secondly I have a two month old ball python and I am wondering if I should take him to the vet. He opens his mouth regularly and sometimes I see him breathing more heavily. Mostly that happens after eating or when I am in front of the enclosure. Otherwhise he seems healthy. He eats like a champ, cruises his whole enclosure and is very active. No bubbles or mucus on the mouth. Temperatures are good as well. I am worried I'll stress him out too much if I bring him too the vet. I've had him for two weeks. Thanks so much for your content.

I'd like to throw out a thought concerning shipping. As a fairly new snake owner, the idea of shipping a snake scares the poo out of me. How do you know they'll be handled gently? A lot of people actively hate snakes and you have no control over who at FedEx handling your box. I really wanted a Spotted Python, but shipping was so scary to me that I decided against that option. The two expos I went to didn’t have a single Antaresia. So, I decided on a MBK. He's great! But I still would like a SP if I can find one without shipping.

What a stressful time you had, hope she is ok now. Do you ever treat your snakes occasionally with anti parasite treatments as a precaution? I thought about doing it with my snakes but was told not to.

Thanks, she's doing well now. I wouldn't just randomly treat unless it was a wild-caught animal or farm raised overseas.

I'd be interested to know the life cycle of those lung worms and where they normally come from. Is it most likely with a wild import? Also, are they in the snakes poo or do the eggs get spread through aerosol exposure? Are there risks of the worms infecting other parts of the body? Are the worms specialized to the species or have a chance of infecting other reptiles, humans, amphibians or mammals in the house?.... Bob I know you don't have these answers, it just opened up a whole new set of questions I have. I've had a dog with lung flucks before (they are lung worms) and they are really difficult to detect without a fecal sample. The dog can be infected for years without showing symptoms and once they do, really bad damage has been done. Also incredibly expensive and difficult to treat.

I know you obviously bring snakes to the vet whenever they have a health problem you're worried about, but I was wondering: Do snakes need check-ups like some other pets beyond a basic at-home inspection? If snakes are so good at "hiding" health problems, how would you be able to tell in those instances until something arises if not?

@@GreenRoomPythons thank goodness!! I love how you breed on the side but more of a pet owner that wants to see your animals. I just ordered a bigger enclosure for one of my pythons. @@GreenRoomPythons I think tubs are great for a quarantine spot & for babies getting ready for a new home. Not sure about a permanent home however I guess it could work if you do it correctly. I’m a bit selfish because I want to see them without constantly pulling out their tubs. Lol

@@KT-kn9vd yeah tubs work great for the functionality of keeping snakes healthy and comfortable, but they're not for every species and the big downside is that you can't watch your snake in there.

The waiting list is full for the one clutch I have right now. None of these happen to be defensive, but you can expect a hatchling to be nervous and defensive because that's they way they're wired straight out of the egg... Never "mean" though, just defensive ;-)
