For me, the Road King has always been the apex Harley Davidson. Sure you can get more "stuff' on Glides and Ultra but that just puts those bikes on the locomotive end of the weight scale. Handles as well or arguably better than soft tails. Wind splitter is very rider height dependent.

@seniorp9444 11 месяцев назад
I sold my unreliable Pan America last year and got a road king special like that one in black. No regrets. I would like to try the windsplitter shield like the one on your bike. The only complaint is it looks so good stock I haven’t been interested in doing a lot of mods and upgrades-usually I make a lot of changes to my bikes 😂

How do you like the stock handlebars? The reach for me in slow turns is just too far. I'm also not a huge fan of the ape hanger look. Although the stock road king special I think does a great job with the 9" mini apes.
@seniorp9444
@seniorp9444 11 месяцев назад
@@zeromileadv I think they are 10” but no issues. I’ve had apes before on other Harleys and didn’t think they made a big difference in comfort. Everyone is different. The only comfort mod I made to this bike, and I recommend for taller riders, is moving floorboards out 1” and forwards 1” with the billet proof design’s kit.

A dr650 and a road king special fit the bill perfectly in my garage. Dr650 was designed from day one for abuse and being dropped. Road king is just King of 2 wheel long distance transportation on asphalt !

Nice bike and you're spot on with your comments. I have a '19 RK and absolutely love it. I don't need a radio and GPS on a big faring, I like the minimalist of the King

From what I can see from owning an 88 FLHS, the touring platforms have only gotten better over time. I never got tired of riding it 98000 mi.

Nice presentation. As for expensive, which you emphasized so many times, I bought my first one on September 11 2001 (yep, that day) and I paid 17,000 dollars for it. It is now 22 years later and that motorcycle has been in every state east of the Mississippi and with over 110,000 miles on it that Wide Glide is still as sound, solid and reliable as it was the day I first threw my leg over it. I spent around 16 cents a mile for it and about 722 bucks a year for it. That, me brother, is Not Expensive; and it’s still worth near 10K and the comparable HoYaSuKawis and “sport bikes” of the same vintage are not worth the time it takes to go see them. So, the way I see it, I can buy a bike, or I can invest in me future. I am glad I did what you did and invested in me future. I now have four of these warhorses and I love them.

I think if you look at a BMW 1250 GS or other similar ADV bikes. You get a lot more bang for your buck compared to the Harley. And thus far every dealer has stated as far as maintence goes "well XXX brand maintence is expensive". But with all that being said I do love the Road King.

The point of the windshield louvers isn’t to ventilate you 😂 , you can adjust the angle to mitigate the buffeting. I find 3/4 up is the right angle for over 65mph. The idea is to create a predictable wind between you and the windshield that equalizes pressure front and back of your head.

Having this road king special and the KTM 1290 SAS would be a great two-bike stable.

One of the reasons Road Kings don’t have tech is because tech always gets old. Think of all the bikes/cars with CD or even tape players. No worries about that issue with this model. 👌 I love the old school look so I’m a big fan of the Road King but I totally agree with you about the price. I guess they wouldn’t if people weren’t lining up to pay it. 🤷‍♂️

Good review. I agree with your summary, except maybe the part about hanging with sport bikes. It handles very well, but it ain't quite that good. Still, probably more capable than most people could push it. People that knock them, really need to give a modern one a try. They are infinitely better than they used to be. The worst thing about those stretched bags is you have to lay them on their side if you take them off. The standard bags are far better for that reason alone. You have to take the all the maintenance into account when comparing bikes. Yes, the HD is initially more expensive, but there is no coolant to change. There are no valves that need to be adjusted. The fork oil change is at 50k miles. That's basically the first time my RK's seen a shop besides to have a tire put on. And the resale on them is going to blow away most adv bikes.
@zeromileadv
@zeromileadv 11 месяцев назад
I guess I should clarify. If you took someone with some good riding skills. It would be my guess they could likely hang with the avergae sport bike rider. But yeah I would agree good skills + sport bike vs the Road King = not gonna happen 🤣

Great vid! I currently have a 21 Harley Electra Glide. I’ve added numerous performance mods. I went up to a 128 engine cam tb etc to include suspension & swing arm. It’s a blast to rider but I’ve been eyeing the KTM1290 SA S. Any chance you can do a side by side comparison? Just asking. Thanks
@zeromileadv
@zeromileadv 16 дней назад
Great question. Being that you have an electra glode youre pretty familar with the road king feel. For me the SAS can do everything the Road King can do and more. It is also better in the corners than the Road King. But if I were to do big road miles 250+ I would take the Road King all day. With the HD engine balancing being front to back the bike is a lot smoother. The SAS has a lot of vibz which become fatiguing. However the SAS has far better wind protection. But if I were to explore twisty roads and want to short cut on some dirt tracks. SAS all day. I've really been eyeing the potentail SA 1390 Rally Pro that looks to be coming out in 2025 ;)

I feel like the Road King not necessarily the Road King special is the best bike Harley makes. I put 65,000 miles on my 2017 in 18 months. The best bike I ever had no doubt. I hate the look of the extended bags myself. I’m also not a fan of the blacked out look or the low profile tires on the RK specials. I’ve always had great luck with my Harleys. The Pan America is the first one I’ve had any trouble with. Like most it is a dealer tech issue rather than a bike issue. 300,000+ HOG documented miles on my Harleys in only 8 years of riding them. But I also have a Yamaha and a Suzuki in the garage. I like all bikes.

You've got to have heated grips and heated seats if you live in the NE USA. Harley gives so little for so much money. That Gauge is terrible for a $26K + bike. Like you said cool factor is pretty good but you don't get much for your money.

I have looked at all of the baggers since I bought my Sportster S and the Road King Special is my favorite. If I ever add a bagger, that’s probably the one. I hear Klock Werks makes a good windscreen and fairing for it too. 👍🏾
