New Archaeological Discovery Challenges Bible Skeptics

In 2019, an ancient curse tablet was found by archaeologists in Israel that is likely at least 3,200 years old. Scholars believe it may show the earliest Hebrew name for God. This calls into question the Documentary Hypothesis, which speculates that the first five books of the Bible were not written by Moses, but by various editors and authors. Dr. Jeremiah Johnston joins me to talk about what he thinks is the archaeological find of our lifetime.

For those who may be confused about why the dating of the Exodus matters: The reason why skeptical scholars push a later date for the Exodus is because there is no archaeological evidence at that time of any of the major events of the Exodus; however, there is a WEALTH of archaeological evidence that supports all of the major events of the Exodus if one uses the earlier date. When people make the claim that there is “no evidence for the Exodus” they are unknowingly citing scholars who are, to paraphrase Indiana Jones, are “digging in the wrong place.” These scholars use a single name in the Bible of the city of Rameses, and try to date the Exodus during the reign of Pharaoh Rameses II. However, the Biblical Pharaoh is actually never named, but the dates and chronology in the Bible clearly puts the time of the Exodus long before Rameses II. Every objection regarding "lack of proof" is instantly resolved and we would have an ABUNDANCE of proof, if we accept that the Exodus happened in the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, 2050-1600 BC. Which is also the "Early Bronze Age" date. There is evidence of Hebrews entering Egypt, later becoming slaves, a mass exodus of slaves including taking treasures from Egypt, a period of a major loss of Egyptian military power, followers of Yahweh traveling as nomads in the desert, the conquests of the Biblical cities named in the Bible, etc., all following the earlier (and Biblical) dating for the Exodus.

But that's not true. There is evidence for the exodus, if you assume the late date. Also, in what sense are late-date exodus scholars 'sceptical'? Sceptical of what? Certainly it's true that not all late-date exodus advocates are christian; but that's also true of early-date advocates: look at David Rohl for example. Both early- and late- date advocates have sceptics and non-sceptics within them.

But if you look back at what the person said, they didn't say that. If they had, it would have been immediately obvious to me what they meant. They actually put the word "more" at the end of the sentence. That's why I said "at first" I thought they didn't agree. But then I saw "more" at the end of the sentence and realized the person WAS in agreement. I was actually making fun at myself for jumping the gun and thinking one thing and then a fraction of a second understanding what they actually were saying. I can't see my exact words, but I think they were " . . .at first I thought". In case you don't understand(and I am not saying you dont) that means that in the begining of my thought process I thought one thing, but subsequently I changed what I thought. However, it is not necessary to debate whether someone was the original author. Take for example Exodus. There is a smattering of desperate attempts to link small amounts of information to jump to the irrational decision something is true while ignoring the questions that would lead to either an acceptance or rejection of the stories. Take the biblical story of the Exodus. How real would the author's presentation be if you asked these questions: • How many male slaves were supposedly involved in the diaspora of Exodus according to the bible? • How many additional wives, children, elderly, other family plus animals were there? • What is the distance from the alleged point of disembarkation to the narrowest point of the Red Sea? • What speed are physically fit U.S. soldiers trained to march at? • What is the designated width for a single lane on a U.S. Interstate highway? • What is the width of the oldest known paved road that was found in Egypt? • What is the average shoulder width of a male? • What would the width of a row of 10 males be given 6 inches of separation of each shoulder between row members? • Assuming a row of 10 across, separated by one yard per row, how many miles would a column of 600,000 male slaves extend? • Assuming an average of 3 additional members in the families of each male slave, how much additional length would be added to the diaspora column? • Assuming two domestic animals per household that would fit into the 10 row across scenario, how much additional length would be added to the column? • At the marching rate of a U.S. soldier, without sleep, rest periods and no stops for meals, how long would it take for the first row to reach the narrowest point of the Red Sea? • The last row? • What is the narrowest point of the Red Sea? • Is the current Red Sea bottom shallow and smooth from shore to shore? • What effect would mud have on marching speed from a recently parted sea on a column of 60,000 rows assuming no other physical barriers? • Assuming no barriers or muddy conditions how long would it take for the first row to cross the narrowest point of the Red Sea? • The last row? • If, as the bible indicates, the Egyptian chariots caught up to the Jews at the Red Sea, how long would the Egyptians then have to miraculously wait for the last row of Jews to begin crossing the Red Sea so that the "lord" could drown them?

Dr. Johnston's comments about why the OT is critical to understand the NT resonate loud and clear with me. My faith didn't grown and develop nearly as much as it did after joining a Torah Club through FFOZ. Having the Messianic Jewish perspective to interpret and connect the OT and NT is essential for Yahweh's Word to resonate through us in the way He designed us to understand His revelations and mysteries as He reveals them to us through scripture.

I'm a little bit familiar with the ministry you cited. I guess the one thing I disagree is their teaching that Jews n believers at large are two different ppl. They emphasize Jew n Gentile to the detriment of God's Word. Scripture teaches that once we become adopted by faith we become full-fledged citizens. We are under one covenant n responsibilities before God .
@cmdb582
@cmdb582 Год назад
So I'm Jewish and absolutely disagree with your statement, altho i've never even heard of that ministry or these two people on the video. But Jews definitely have different obligations than Gentiles, even according to your own scriptures. There are many examples but i'll use a couple that most are familiar with: circumcision and keeping Shabbat, keeping kosher. The new testament specifically states that gentiles don't have to be circumcised, can eat pork etc. Jews are never supposed to eat these things, and always have to be circumcised and observe Shabbat. The Torah says these are to be kept for ALL TIME. So you guys don't have to do these things as Gentiles according to your own scriptures, but Jews do according to Torah, which most Christians say is scripture too. So according to both scriptures, Jews and Gentiles have different obligations. God never made the covenant in Torah with you guys so you aren't bound to it. He made the covenant with us for all time and so we are obligated to keep it. As Jesus did, btw, because he was Jewish

One of the great mysteries of Christian apologists is the chest thumping that occurs when a referenced biblical site is discovered by archaeologists, but the extended silence and ignoring that occurs when archaeology and other disciplines disprove biblical accounts. That is abject self-inflicted delusion. Let's consider the topic and hand and provide me with a good apologetic for what follows: The highly flawed original or revised chronologies of the Exodus simply do not stand when apologists are asked to provide solid, significant and substantiated non-biblical evidence. At best, they can provide lots of coulda’s and coincidences. However, for now, consider simple logistics: geology; oceanography; physical capacity and physics to highlight the impossibility of the biblical account of Exodus. Ignore all of the wives, children, animals and household goods that would have been part of the putative diaspora and just focus on the biblically recorded 600,000 male “slaves”. The account of Exodus implies these slaves were in one highly concentrated locale and mustered all escape logistics nearly overnight. Egypt has no records of a massive population of slaves, but the Old Testament alleges there was. The biblical assertion Egypt had large numbers of Jewish slaves would also suggest these slaves would have been widely distributed in many parts of Egypt. Without modern communication it is incredulous that a coordinated diaspora could have occurred in such rapid fashion as suggested in the bible. However, for the moment allow for the aggregation of 600,000 slaves in a concentrated area for the diaspora. The designated lane width on a U.S. Interstate highway is 12 feet X’s 2 or 24 feet. Reason says any roadway in Egypt at that time frame would be significantly less. But, assume a row of 10 slaves across (25 feet) and 60,000 total rows (600,000/10) separated by a yard that never varied due to narrow paths, obstructions, etc., this line would extend 102 miles (Increase that by a factor of 4 if families and animals are included). To get to the Red Sea point of the alleged crossing of the fleeing slaves, they would have needed to march approximately 800 miles with speed. The U.S. military trains physically fit soldiers to march at a rate of 3.4 mph. To travel 800 miles at that continuous optimum pace (no food, no sleep, no rest breaks) those in the Exodus would need 235 hours (6 days) for the first row to reach the crossing point of the Red Sea and an additional 347 hours for the last row to cross. The bible says the Chariots of the Egyptian Pharaoh overtook the Jews at the Red Sea and many in the diaspora allegedly panicked. They were purportedly assured by the biblically assumed Moses that god would save them and the myth of the parting of Red Sea became entrenched in Jewish and Christian religious lore. What is not pointed out in the bible is that the narrowest point of the Red Sea is approximately 18 miles across. Continuing the assumption these “slaves” matched the marching rate of modern trained soldiers, at the 10 across row, it would have taken the Exodus another 5+ hours to cross the Red Sea for the first row. At 102 miles for the 10 across column 600 long, the last row would have crossed 347 hours (15 days) later! Applying the dizzying logic of Christian apologists, we will assume “god” paved the floor of the Red Sea absolutely flat and dry to achieve optimum marching speed. (Remember, according to apologetic logic if something isn’t mentioned it could be true). In actuality, the sea bed at some points of the narrowest crossing of the Red Sea is hundreds of meters deep with steep cliffs and coral drop offs that would have been in the path of the fleeing Jews - definitely requiring far more than 352 hours for the entirety of the diaspora to cross! After an aggressive pursuit of the Jews to the edge of the Red Sea by the Pharaoh’s chariots, it is ludicrous to believe the Egyptians would then stop and wait at least 357+ 5 hours for the Jews to cross so that god could drown them and leave the Jews untouched! The Christian apologist “coulda’s” with obscure speculations and snippets of obtuse references fall definitively flat when only basic facts from the biblical account of the Jewish diaspora reveal its impossibility.

@@TheseSignsShallFollow well before we read any English translation, we must first look up its originally meaning in its entirety rather than just one word or else we will be lost in the sauce of dogma. There are MANY definitons for the word "god". Here is the strongs exhaustive definition for the word God/elohim/h430 (hebrew number 430) and it is the plural of hebrew word "eloah" or hebrew number h433..... אלהים 'ĕlôhı̂ym el-o-heem' Plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative KJV Usage: angels, X exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty. As we can see that it says "gods" OF the" supreme God" . The word "of" is very important. It also says it's used in the plural which is very important to grasp but that's another teaching. At the end it says "sometimes used as a superlative". Well that's exactly how everybody in the modern church assumes it is to be used and that's how they translate it in their minds whenever they just see the English word "god" which is totally not correct. It basically means angels when it is not used as a superlative . Now. What you need to wonder is why did Jesus in john 10 34 quotes psalm 82 6. Welcome to the beginning of the Riddle of ages and the unrolled scroll my sister. Blessings.

This is a fantastic find! I remember a guy I went to seminary with who later went on to U of Chicago for his PhD in Ancient Near East languages and lost his faith because of the Documentary Hypothesis and minimalist scholarship so abundant in the academy. He told me Deuteronomy 30 was a post-exilic text (speaks of the YHWH EL "circumcising your heart," thus saying such an idea is a later theological invention). But Dt. 30 is chock full of the YHWH + Elohim combination (trans. "the LORD your God"), and this find which includes this combo of thus dismantles a major foundation in the Doc. Hypo.

I love Biblical archaeology. When i heard about this curse tablet (amulet) i thought: God must have kept that hid for such a time as this. When you read about the blessings and the curses in Deuteronomy 26,27,28,-32 you can actually see it coming together. Like 28:59-61. I understand more of the New Testament by the Old. Everything Paul wrote i found in the O.T., everything. Stay away from New versions of the Bibles if you are looking for the truth New Bibles have been altered in various places to change the meaning of things in various passages sometimes in a very small and seemingly insignificant way but has a very massive impact on the truth and changes what is written For example Revelation 13:16 (Old KJV) "16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:" Revelation 13:16 (NKJV) "16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, " Revelation 13:16 (NIV) "16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, " As You can clearly see the word has been changed from IN to ON which might seem insignificant but has a massive impact on whether or not people will accept what the Bible mentions not to accept due to that one small change in newer Bibles New Versions of the Bible have been altered to make people lose their way and to lead people astray from the truth

Yes With the index event of Solomons Reign (970BC) and Temple Building (966BC) and the fact it was 480yrs post-Egypt, the range of 1450-1440 B.C. emerges. - His initial quest led to disappointment as he was introduced to the most popular theory regarding the date of the Exodus, which is the time of Ramesses II (13th century B.C.). As the film points out, one of the bases for this proposal is Exodus 1:11, which mentions that the Israelites built the city of Ramesses. Mahoney, along with such scholars as David Rohl, Bryant Wood, and John J. Bimson,would contend for an earlier date of around 1450 B.C., which is traditionally the date accepted by some evangelical scholars. Caveat: The earlier date does not appear to be early enough. The pattens of evidence that Mahoney discusses take one back into the period known in Egypt as the Middle Kingdom, and this is a full 200 years earlier than the 1450 B.C. date. The current chronology that is used, not only creates problems for the biblical account, but it also requires gaps of time to be inserted into the chronologies of other ancient nations in order to make them synchronize with Egyptian history.

Nope, sorry. The circumstances of the announcement of the inscription is highly suspicious. The researchers made the first public announcement about their supposed discovery at a press conference without having published anything about it in any kind of scholarly or peer-reviewed journal. This means that the wider community of Biblical scholars and archaeologists did not have any chance to review the researchers’ claims about the alleged discovery before those claims became published as news. The researchers have also for some reason chosen not to show any of the actual tomographic scans that they supposedly used to draw their conclusion about the existence of the inscription. This means that they have presented absolutely no hard evidence to support any of their claims about the inscription. The only evidence that is currently public is what the researchers themselves have asserted. There is no clear, publicly available evidence that the tablet even contains any inscription at all, let alone one that says what the researchers claim it says. It is entirely possible that the “inscription” may be nothing more than the pareidolic perception of researchers overzealously committed to finding supposed “proof” that the Bible is historically accurate anywhere they can.

I went to Israel in 2010 and it truly changes you! I have seen Pilate's name in the stone. Here were some things that stood out to me. 1)Why did Jesus preach from Peter's boat? Jesus knew the water would amplify His voice like a microphone and the multitude could hear Him clearly. Our guide illustrated this for us. 2. The eye of a needle is not a threading needle. It's an opening in a wall, which was for people to make petitions to the king. The worker from the palace would read your petition and may or may not take it to the king. The opening was only big enough for a hand to go fit through. Jesus made the statement..."It is easier for a camel to walk through an opening big enough for your hand...then a rich man making it to Heaven." Wow! 3.The Mt. of Olives, Gethsemane, Golgotha, are extremely close! Gethsemane is at the base of the Mt. of Olives..which is close to the Eastern Gate of the city. Golgotha is located about 50 yards from Gethsemane. A garden tomb has been found that fits the description perfectly described for the resurrection and it's about 30 yards from Golgotha right outside of the walls of the city. 4. Gates of Hell: Jesus and His disciples walked about 10 miles to Caesarea Phillipi in one day. Jesus did this for a special reason in Matthew 16. In this district...there is a place known as the Gates of Hades. Jesus took the disciples to this spot and asked them, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter made the claim that He was the true Son of God. At this site there are still to this day...many pagan altars which have been built and are still visible. Jesus told Peter that He was blessed and that the Father had revealed it to him. He then made the statement, "Upon this rock, I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." The disciples would have known what Jesus was saying. Jesus was saying in essence..."You see all these pagans and false gods? You see these altars? Look at Simon! He is now going to be a rock because of his faith! I will build my church upon this faith and all these pagan gods and gates of hell can't defeat it." The disciples would have seen this massive rock and the base is known as the gates of hell. Jesus used His surroundings to teach a lesson! The disciples would have been staring at the gates of hell and then they would turn and see Jesus....who said, "I am greater than all of these. These are all false! I am TRUTH! and I can stand on the gates of hell and they can't even destroy me! Israel will change you!

The highly flawed original or revised chronologies of the Exodus simply do not stand when apologists are asked to provide solid, significant and substantiated non-biblical evidence.

I am not a Biblical archaeologist. But from what I have heard the way to sum up Ron Wyatt is: unsubstantiated claims. That is not to say that all of his claims are false. Rather he has made claims that no one has really verified. Ron Wyatt has claimed to have found multiple archaelogical sites that evidence the mountain Moses received the ten commandments from God was located in Saudia Arabia instead of Sinai Egypt. Wyatt places the Red Sea crossing at the Gulf of Aqaba instead of the Gulf of Suez. I have visited the traditional Gulf of Suez (Red Sea) crossing as well as the traditional mountain in Egypt Moses received the commandments on. There is an old Monostary at the base of the traditional mountain. From what I have heard no one has really verified all of Wyatt's claims because Saudia Arabia's military will not allow archaeologist into the region. The claims Ron Wyatt has made about Noah's ark are likely true. From what I have heard there is archaeological evidence for the location of Sodom & Gomorrah. But I believe Wyatt overstated the evidence in his video. From what I have heard, Wyatt's claims about the ark of the covenant seem unlikely. That said there is huge evidence archaeologically for many of the things written about in the New and Old Testament. When I say huge amounts of evidence. I mean tons and tons of archaeological evidence. Historical locations, items found, writings found. There are historians from other countries that even document and verify some of the things both in the New & Old Testament of the Bible. For example King Sennacherib of Assyria 701 BC wrote down on a decorative stone how he had taken over all of Israel except Jerusalem. He mentions the Israelite King Hezekiah by name. And boasts of having Hezekiah trapped in Jerusalem like a bird in a cage. This matches up with what the Bible says happened. There have been many other good Biblical archaeologists besides Ron Wyatt.

Recently I went to see the new jurassic Park movie and afterwards, for whatever reasons, a thought came to my mind: How do you know dinosaurs actually existed? It was something I never even questioned, I, like most people, just blindly accepted everything I've been told about history. So now this seed was sown and I started to look into it and ask some questions......to say that the response I got to even having the question was vitriolic. To even ask, did Dinosaurs really walk the earth as we've been told, seemed like something I was not allowed to do. I still have to complete my investigation on this one but the fact that I've been met with hostility, mockery and exasperation is a red flag. But I've noticed the difference in the reaction between asking if the dinosaurs actually existed and if christianity and the biblical account of history is true........if you question christianity, Christians will all say, Go and check it out for yourself, look into it. They're open to all of it being investigated. It's the exact opposite reaction you get if you question the existence of dinosaurs. With the latter your met with closed doors and hostility. With the former, open doors and a welcome. To me that says it all.

Dinosaurs obviously existed. We have the fossil records. As a Christian I have no quandary with it. We know that the earth existed for a long time before man.. how long we don’t know? I believe they were on the earth then.. Some dinosaurs (and pterosaurs) may indeed have been created in the fifth era listed in Genesis, when the Bible says that God made “flying creatures” and “great sea monsters.” Perhaps other types of dinosaurs were created in the sixth epoch. The vast array of dinosaurs with their huge appetites would have been appropriate considering the abundant vegetation that evidently existed in their time.

Anyone wondering about Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal for the blessing and curse. God had told the Israelites that He would bless them and care for them in the land if they followed Him. "I will be your God and you will be my people". But that if they turned away from following Him. There would be a curse on them and the land would vomit them out just as the land was going to vomit out the Canaanites. For the covenant ceremony at Mount Ebal and Gerizim it was right after they had entered the land God had promised them. They were obeying God in reciting the covenant God had previously made with them. Obedience = blessing, Diobedience = discipline. You can see actual pictures of Joshua's altar at Mt. Ebal if you look online or in Bible study materials. When I was in Israel studying on a short trip I wanted to see it in person but did not get to because of constraints.

The chariot wheels they found in the red sea are not in museums everywhere because 1)The coral that stuck to and surrounded the wheels are the only thing that remains since the wheels have disintegrated and, 2)They cannot be removed to put in a museum because they are very fragile and will crumble into something unrecognizable to a chariot wheel.

Museums recover and preserve fragile marine artifacts, even encased in coral, all the time. Further, the slowest growing corals still grow at a rate of about 1 cm a year. A thirty-three hundred year-old-wheel that was encased in coral would have growth about 70 feet thick surrounding it, and be unrecognizable as a wheel. I can believe new findings that point to an Exodus date for the event, where it matches the archeological and historical evidence. That is a separate issue for finding the date that our current book of Exodus was completed and by whom - whether one author or a team of authors, or various editions over time. There is a lot more evidence for the Torah in general to have not been written by Moses entirely when we look at its current form than just whether the two names for God appear together in the same historical time. One of the key arguments could be struck down - the argument about the two names appearing together; but that doesn't mean the whole theory is wrong. I can believe that the current book of Exodus we have is the inspired Word of God and is the version of the Book of Exodus that God wants us to have today, even if Moses did not pen the whole thing in its current form. Our belief in the Bible and in the Exodus (etc.) does not stand or fall on there having been a single author for any given book with no edits or additions over time. Divine inspiration occurs in more than just one way, using more than just one writer and compiler.
@toddfordr8218
@toddfordr8218 2 года назад
I really I dont understand why it matters, if you beleive it's all divinely inspired anyway. That's where faith takes over and facts go out the window. You'll never find evidence to confirm that God gave instructions or inspiration. And faith isn't being put in a God, but in the men who claimed "he" spoke to them for the purpose of leading their people. The big three religions born from the old testament all fight to control that same narrative of what "God said". Even amongst themselves. Jesus never wrote a single word of the new testament, so how could establishing who the author really was add anything to the authenticity of the story told about him? The bible as we know it wasn't created in the time of Jesus. We know that as a fact. The christian bible came almost 300 years after it. Authentication of early Christian history only establishes that the story of Jesus existed in that time. The fact is that it was spread by Roman Democracy while trying to conquer lands that belong to the hebrews and since then Democracy and Christianity have spread as one. Personally I think Christian's should learn more about their own history. It matters.
@douglasrasmussen480
@douglasrasmussen480 Год назад
Continued faith based on belief for an event easily disproven is delusion. If you were to rationally examine the claims of Exodus and apply skeptical questions, the authorship would indeed not matter for whomever might have penned the story was presenting a mythology not a factual event. Ask these questions: • How many male slaves were supposedly involved in the diaspora of Exodus according to the bible? • How many additional wives, children, elderly, other family plus animals were there? • What is the distance from the alleged point of disembarkation to the narrowest point of the Red Sea? • What speed are physically fit U.S. soldiers trained to march at? • What is the designated width for a single lane on a U.S. Interstate highway? • What is the width of the oldest known paved road that was found in Egypt? • What is the average shoulder width of a male? • What would the width of a row of 10 males be, given 6 inches of separation of each shoulder between row members?

It saddens me when any of Ron Wyatt’s works come up and not believed by another brother in the same field of work... or when RW just doesn’t get any credit for anything.

Wow my twelve year old also wants to get baptized in the Jordan river (something that never even crossed my mind when I was younger. ) God is working with our youth and is planning something special for them. God bless!

And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Yashar'el, and that I am Yahuah Elohaykem, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Ruach upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Ruach. And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of Yahuah come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of Yahuah shall be delivered: for in Mount Tsiyon and in Yerushalayim shall be deliverance, as Yahuah has said, and in the remnant whom Yahuah shall call.
