Did you buy a new bathtub drain that won't screw In? This is due to your new drain having a different thread pitch and possibly different outside diameter of the drain threads. This is easily correctible with a few simple measurements to help you choose the correct adapter drain bushing to screw over your new bathtub drain threads. This new bathtub drain bushing will then adapt your new drain kit to screw in to the drain opening on the bottom of your bathtub.

Don't use a wrench. My daughter did that and broke it the drain. I bought the Husky Tub Drain Removal Tool to get it out. Listen to Jeff and you will be ok.

Lol I used a pair of lineman pliers by the handle because they tend to be thick and robust, then I turned the pliers with a pipe wrench, but if I had the cool tool I would definitely use it.

@jeffostroff I tried 2 different husky tub removal tools that didn't work so I broke the drain on purpose and then used a dremel to put some cuts into it for grip then put the back of a hammer in and was able to break it loose then was able to unscrew it.

All this to replace a drain plug? The whole bathroom business is bobby trapped. I don't know what is worse to deal with - replacing a toilet, or something like this. Touch anything and it turns in a a can of worms. Kudos to Jeff for doing this in apartment buildings where he needs to get it right the first time and in one day and not cause the leaks in the building. I wanted to replace a toilet seat in my house then said might as well replace the whole toilet. Bought the elongated one by mistake, took it back to replace it with smaller one. Then realized my flange needed to be replaced. Had to chisel around the pipe to remove it but dealt with that, then realized my floor is bad and ended up replacing the sub-floor bellow the toilet and relocating hvac pipe from the lower bathroom that was in the way ... Then wanted to replace the bath fan and realized it wasn't even hooked up to the roof vent it was just venting in the attic and that is how the builders left it 30 years ago. ....Replaced the vanity and realized the new one was 1/2 in bigger so had to build up new floor height to adjust it,used difficult to cut cement boards-needed a special blade to complete the job. I suspected replacing drain on the tub would end up exactly like what Jeff;s ordeal here that is why I would never touch mine w/o real emergency never for cosmetics. I think replacing the whole tub is easier but you MUST gut down the whole bathroom to the studs. Doing this piece by piece is worse. I mean none of this is really difficult but you have to forget about everything else and devote infinite amounts of time and purchase the most annoying to find parts and special tools to get everything right. The alternative- to call professionals is out of the question for me because they charge you obscene amounts of money and you just don't know if they did it right or not.

Thank you so much for emphasizing threads per inch! Now I know why my box-store replacement was leaking. They didn't state anywhere the TPI but I measured and the new one was 16 TPI while my old one was 14 TPI. Close enough that I could thread it in but different enough that it would leak.

This is literally the exact problem I was having. No drain replacement would thread into my tub (because the original one had course threads) Now I know where to find the bushing. I went everywhere!!

OK I didn't want to like this video because of the dad jokes but it really set me on the right path to replacing the bathtub drain in our 1955 home that still had original drain. None of the off the shelf replacement kits would fit and it drove me crazy why. I have to give Jeff credit on making this video very easy to understand and next steps. Just like this video I bought the red and blue sleeves from Watco and everything dropped right into place. Thanks Jeff, you saved this man's sanity.

I love your DIY videos along with another Canadian DIY show. Your instructions are clear and you are not arrogant or talk down to your viewers, unlike a builder channel from Texas does. We are going to be moving onto a brand new house my F-I-L is building for us. But our landlord is crazy, therefore we are fixing inexpensive damage to the house that was caused by her lack of maintenance and her cutting costs on the remodel that was completely her own fault, but she blames us for everything, including forty-year old leaking windows a broken forty-year storm door that never closed, no exhaust system in the bathrooms or kitchen, not sealing Pergo in wet areas, and the whole septic tank system needs to be replaced, even though she never maintains it, and many other issues like corroded pipes that have damaged the bathtub faucet and handles, etc. It is just easier to fix things on our own than to have a headache we we move put on November or her trying to sue us for $10,000 for a new septic system when it never worked properly from day one. The house was never remodeled properly. Caveat Emptor, don't rent a place that looks brand new because there can be so many problems that our hidden and don't rent from a crazy foreigner who only accepts cash for rent and only speaks English when it's convenient to her.

You can check the threads' TPI match by meshing them side by side (one right-side up, one upside down). If they match they'll mesh cleanly.

Thanks for that last info about the Watco faceplate. I already own the drain wrench, so was able to move drain up a little but in the end might want to reuse drain (only 19 years old) with new faceplate. I still will remove drain flange completely to make sure the black washer is installed correctly and redo putty.

Thanks for the video. I’ll be doing my drain in a few weeks. I got the drain already purchased. The top opening looks bigger than the old one. But it also has very thin walls. So I’m hoping it’s ok. I can only find 1 1/2 inch drains in the shops near me. Hopefully it fits. Hopefully my drain is actually 1 1/2 inch

Plumb shop from Canadian tire has the wrench in the picture as a removal tool. I was also told the new drains are plastic. So even more room for error with wrong tools. The proper drain wrench has gotten cheaper. Just got one for $7.99. Score.

Thank you for this video. It is extremely helpful. When you said you would put silicone sealant around the drain after you finish the installation, how much do you use? Just a thin bead around. Do you wipe it in? Smooth it out? I’m new to all this but learning as I go. Thanks!

yes I run a bead all the way around the flange, then when it oozes out, immediately wipe if off, and use wet paper towels, before it starts to set up

I wanted to drop a comment to thank you for making this video and going through the detail. Some days ago I had used the tool you suggested to unscrew my old tub basket. unfortunately it's 1 7/8" across where the threads are and is a 14 thread. So it's what the blue bushing converts to. However, the drain I bought was already 1 7/8" without a bushing. Now I ordered a smaller drain plug and have to wait 2-3 weeks for the bushing to arrive and hope that this all works. Apparently no one makes a 14 thread 1 7/8" bathtub pop up drain plug. At all. No one. So the frustrating part of my project is not the work itself or the labor but rather having some ancient plumbing that no one works with any more and I got quoted $700 to replace the whole system and decided to try it myself to just swap out the drain plug. What a nuisance. The industry are a-holes for making everything so obnoxious just to scrape together a buck at the customer's expense. Anyway, thank you again for the video, the information about the bushings, and your tips. Hopefully everything works out in a few weeks' time and I'll still have spent under $100, just dealt with the headache of not being able to find a damn pop up 1 7/8" 14 thread drain plug on the planet.

Probably not, it means either the black rubber o-rings are degraded and leaking, or if you pull out the cartridge, the 2 tiny rubber washers that go way back into the valve holes might be degraded, so it does not get a good seal. Either way, new cartridge is $15 so why no replace it and reset the clack back to day 1 again.

When screwing on the new bushing onto the new drain and tightening it, then having to remove it when it goes bad will the bushing come out still attached to the drain or will it separate and stay in the tube drain?

If you tighten it really good onto the drain flange it should come off with the drain flange if you ever have to unscrew it out of the tub shoe opening. But in the event that it stays behind it should not be too hard to get it to come out

This x16 thread, is this the new one, or the old one that you pulled out? You have to replace your drain with the same thread count that you took out, and diameter. IF it stops 3 or 4 turns in, the thread is not the same as the old one, so it won't mate up to the drain.

@@Callingzion Did you use that table that I showed? If you can't find it there then your only other choice might be to replace the entire drain and overflow assembly which would require access to the droid wall behind the plumbing in the shower.

I'm in tears trying to figure this out on my own. I had purchased the wrong size drain because it was too tall. The old drain is like you show 1". The one I purchased looks to be about 1.5". The threads seem to start to screw in but it only goes half way in. It's too tall. I've taken pictures and you can clearly see that the old drain is much shorter than the new drain.

You should be able to take the old dream that you pulled out of the tub and use all of the methods I showed here in the video to determine what you need to buy. Some people end up just ordering new drains online that have the correct width and threads so sometimes you have to get them from plumbing houses, sometimes it helps to know what the brand name is of your drain which is often the same as the the faucets but not only is guaranteed.

The Older vs Newer Tub drain shoe size SLIDE at around 4:25 mins. has lousy arithmetic Older side is CORRECT: two x 1/8" added to 1 3/8" does equal 1 5/8" BUT on the right side NEWER Tub dimensions are WRONG two x 1/8" added to 1 1/2" does NOT equal 1 7/8th"! It equals 1 3/4" ( or 1 4/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 1 6/8 = 1 3/4!)

Dang I didn't know that's what the gasket was for. The last one I installed didn't even come with a gasket and by luck I used putty but if that had been in the package I definitely would have used it in place of the putty. However, the manufacturers instructions don't say anything about putty OR the gaskets purpose. Just says remove old and screw in new.

sounds like you measure wrong. Did you use a caliper? If you measured 1 7/8 outside diameter, that is probably correct. Now it is the thread pitch, the # of threads per inch you need to figure You that you have so you can order the right bushing.

There must be threads. This is how they secure down. Otherwise you have yo get into wall in front of tube and replace entire drain overflow pipe section which gives you brand new threaded drain pipe

Yes you should always try and use the correct tool. However you most certainly can use a pair of pliers and you can use them with the handles pointing down into the drain. You just need to adjust the pliers. The ones I’m speaking of are the ones this video shows all you do is use the adjustment snd set it so that the working end the jaws are set for grabbing the larger size bolt. This causes the handles to come closer to gather at the bottom. Then they will fit into the drain. Yes you do take the risk of it damaging the drain trim. But most likely you are taking it out for replacement so it don’t mater. Plus even if you have the special tool, you still greatly run the same risk due to drain just being old snd stuck. You can Aldo use a couple screw drivers and a pair of pliers to turn them. By the way you will need a pair of pliers to turn the pliers in the drain as well you can also use a good sturdy pair of needle nose in the drain with pliers to turn. By the way if your drain is over a few years old count on it being hard to turn loose. Even with the correct tool. Many many times I start with the correct tool only to swap to the old true and time tested alternative means. Some times you even have to chisel out the old or make some small shallow cuts with a hack saw blade and bend and break the old out as long as your easy and don’t cut into the tub threads it will not hurt a thing. Snd at this point it’s your last option anyways. So unlike the man in this video I don’t make one red cent by telling you to use one tool over the other or get any type of payment other than self worth from saying BS TO ONLY UDING THE $10.00 special tool that slips out and is truly not much more effective than other methods that we have used long before this tool was around. So sometimes it’s just a tool promoting a tool. Enough said

No, you are wrong there. The stores give you only 2 types of thread, if your old drain is not one of them, no stores has the correct bushing in stock and you have to order on in the mail

@@jeffostroff yes you are absolutely correct on them only having the two standard size but if you take it you have a chance of buying only the one you need. That is if that store sells them that way. My local HD sells one in a kit that has both and they sell them with out the bushing. If I go to Ferguson plumbing supply they do carry in stock the 14 thread one.

I threw the old drain away and the 3/8 stops screwing in at a point. Seems like it needs like a 1/4 but I have no clue on what to order. Help please

You will either have to get that old drain somehow if you can get it back out of the trash, or you're going to have to bite the bullet and have a plumber come and they will determine the threading they should have tools that could determine what the threading is on it so that the proper drain can be placed in there. The other thing you can do is if you have access to the wall behind the faucet, you can reach in there like some people do just cut a hole in the wall and put in a whole new drain kit from Home Depot the kit is basically $20. And people will just put in a brand new drain shoe opening with the overflow drain there it's all connected as a couple of pieces of plastic

I found them at Home Depot, Lowe's also sells them (plumbing section). Paid $7.89 for the small one like the one in the video.

What do you do if when you remove the old drain the pipe drops just enough so that you can't attach the new drain?

You either need to get a deeper drain shoe, or try to reach down in with one finger and pull the pipe back up because it isn't all shaped pipe so you should be able to curve your finger around it and pull the pipe back up or stick something in there to help keep it pulled upwards until you can thread on the drain shoe

this is all well and good until you have to deal with a corroded drain that you have to cut out and mangle so you can't figure out the thread count

Best way to handle that is cut 2 vertical slits in the drain and pry the piece out, then you have an intact drain with just a slice of pie shape missing.

i did the job last night and it was tough but i got it! I notched a slot with dremel tool to hammer it around with a screwdriver. I used a heatgun to soften the old putty. I had to notch it like 4 times to get a full turn. After about 1.5hrs I got it! The old drain had putty in all the threads which made a B----! thanks for the video @@jeffostroff

Use calipers to measure the diameter, that you might have to buy a few bushings to test which thread works

Your better off to just replace the entire tub drain and overflow if you have an old one . There are fine threads and coarse threads. Most homeowners don't know that there are these two different threads, alot of the older tubs that were installed back in the 80s have smaller coarse threads which are hard to find. I even see contractors trying to thread a fine threaded tub drain into a coarse drain body and then they screw up the threads on the drain body and then Jerry rig it , 1 day later the customer has a water fall coming through there ceiling and of course the moron of a contractor does not respond to there call so they call me over there and now it's costing them roughly $3,000 to replace the drain / overflow/ trap. And hire a drywall guy to re - do there ceiling all because a should have been $100 job that a contractor who doesn't have a master Plumbing license caused.. My advice to everyone watching these DIY videos on RU-vid is this. Call a licensed master plumber who has a reputable name to do any plumbing work. Do not hire a general contractor or handyman or you neighbor who replaced a toilet flapper at his house and now he thinks he is a master plumber because your just asking for trouble. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Yes but this one was a special case you don't just go into Home Depot and buy these they have to be ordered online and now with COVID and companies maintaining very tiny supplies, I went to Ferguson plumbing supply for crying out loud and they didn't even have it in stock

I appreciate your knowledge and expertise, but, I disagree on using the silicone caulk to add an additional seal. Silicone is notorious for loosing adhesion in wet applications and can turn cloudy/dirty. Plumbers putty is sufficient. Oh, and never use a latex caulk in place of plumbers putty, because it will never fully cure.

99% of attempts to remove a tub strainer in a 100-year-old cast iron tub here in the Big Apple result in a broken crossbar. I don't care what tool is used to try and remove it, the result is always the same. We have multi-family apartment buildings in N.Y. with no access to the rear of the bathtub. If by some chance a miracle were to happen and the strainer was able to be backed off, you better hope the shoe (a.k.a) the female threads doesn't drop down, cause then you're F%#$ed. Sometimes hiring a pro isn't a bad idea.

A couple of other good ideas that work pretty well is to spray it several times over a half hour with PB blaster and let it soak in under the flange as much as possible. And then a lot of seasoned plumbers will heat it up either with a heat gun or just with their torch heat up the drain enough that everything expands and gets slightly softer and that helps to loosen the drains as well.

So I guess when replacing my mom's 40 year old drain and the top lip broke off, then the threads broke into 4ths will not help in this matter... All I know is with this expander on it won't reach the pipe... 😩

Use an open end wrench on the drain side and screwdriver thru box end for turning leverage. Works just like the tool with no damage.

Americans use both Imperial units and the Metric system simultaneously, depending on the field. All commodities for sale have both the American Imperial units and Metric units on the package. Scientists, mathematicians, mechanics often use Metric, while contractors (builders) use Imperial. Our government found it too costly to convert completley to Metric.

In all my 63 years of DIY home repairs, construction work, all of it, the one thing I never had to touch was a tub drain- aside from running a snake down one and clearing hair, but I digress... All I'd do is grab a 6" X 3/4" black pipe nipple, my 5" grinder & maybe 4 minutes- and I'd have all the drain tool I need!

Lol, it takes a engineer 20 mins to explain something that a plumber takes five mins to do. But I understand this is for diy and it must be explained in detail. I've seen so many diyers break out the cross with a pair of pliers then call the plumber. All good tips for sure but if you have a leak it's not always the tub drain.

I had a leak and called a leak detection company, they said it was the drain. I removed the drain and found a stripped out PVC drain shoe. Can it be re-threaded?
