New Bees! (Installing a Nuc)

Back in February, when I only had two living hives, I ordered a package and a nuc to add to the bee yard. (I had no idea I would be expanding so much this summer!) I picked up the package back in April and just a few weeks ago, the nuc became available. In this video I install and get to know my new bees!
Fun Fact: The "New Package" bees we've come to know and love are from the same line of queens as this nuc. Woo hoo!
These bees and my "New Package" Italians came from Autumn Morning Farm in Barre, MA. (Great supplier!)

Just have to say that your channel is so much fun to watch...there are lots of beekeeper channels, but I like yours so much. Why? You! You’re down to earth, but keep a sense of humor and a positive outlook. I like that you allow us to learn with you versus teaching from behind the podium, if you get what I mean. You’ve brought us into your story, I guess. And you have really developed your on camera presence...clearly, you are now perfectly comfortable being yourself and talking to a little electronic box out in field by yourself, lol! I concur. I am so nervous to start my bees. Since November when I started watching Bee videos on your tube I probably have watched over 100 hours of videos. Vino Farm is my favorite I feel like we have all gron together. The failures of year one have made a better beekeeper out of him.

Hi! I recently started to watch your videos, without any knowledge about bees or beekeeping . Now I can't stop watching! Well Jim... I'm hooked on your colonies. I love you channel and i have zero intention on ever keeping bees due to having an anaphylactic reaction to their stings but i love watching you keep yours! We need new names for all the colonies now! I would mix some Ultra bee pollen sub with 1 to 1 syrup until made to a consistency of toothpaste. Lay it over a 3" X 5" piece of plastic and squish it down to 1/4 inch of baking paper on top of it in between outer frames and top board. My strong hives go through it in 3 days. Feed lots of Sugar water during a July/August Dearth for your starters. Once they get foragers going it will be easier. Watch out for wonky comb with the black foundation if it is 4.9 mm. Have found yellow rite cell at 5.4mm works better. Test the new ones for varroa asap being your yard is nearly varroa free. Love Italian Queens. Walked out 3 days ago without protection and fed them 50 lbs of Sugar. Going on to 800 lbs for this first year. Come Fall here in central California (Foothills) it will change. They are bringing in some strange white pollen. Have to find out where that is coming from.

So a few months ago I said you'd go into winter with 12 hives if you did splits and at that time - you thought I was a (you were polite) crack pot. Now, since you have the idea, go for the bakers dozen and make up one more split before September! I'm thinking I'd push for another Russian as they aren't as lazy as the Italians during a dearth. From all my (2) years of experience I have learned that bees love to make comb in the spring, but not so much as the summer goes on. If there's one thing I will never have enough of as a beekeeper, it's drawn comb! Some people like diamonds and gold, I prefer honeycomb. ;)

I was so excited to see this! Although I’d be lying if I didn’t say that about all your videos! I’m hoping to start my hives next spring and was leaning towards a nuc vs a package. I’m in Virginia and just applied for the bee grant. The state has a 60% loss of hives last year so they are giving away hives! I'm afraid of bees in my own yard, yet watching your videos makes me realize over and over again how beautiful bees really are, and how if you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you. But I think it'll take a while before my mind is like "Okay, bees aren't really that bad! Maybe I can actually coexist with them!"

Watch out for all the spiders in the buckwheat! Please keep us updated on the nuc, it's kind of late to be installing one and hoping for growth, especially with an over-wintered queen as they really shut down their laying after the summer solstice. Nice video, thanks!

Did you just see that giant hole on the second frame you picked up??? Thats due to natural drawn comb. I'm going to try this, because I'm hearing that pressed wax sheets and plastic sheets have like a 6.4mm size, which is closer to drone cells. 4.6-5.2mm is the natural size that bees make their wax, and its been said that allowing bees to draw their own wax, they are stronger in every way. Just an idea to consider. I'm certainly going to give it a go. And it looks like your buyer did as well.

Wow. Even more bees. I hope all of these hives make it through the winter. It will be interesting to see how well that many hives do in your area. Are you planning to rent your hives to growers? I heard growers sometime rent hives to help pollinate the crops. Blue dot would be 2010, which seems wrong. Only one year younger than the original Queen Balboa. If that's right, this could be her last season. I thought I saw the start of a queen cup on a frame. Might want to keep an eye on that.

I stated in the video... the blue dot does not indicate the year. It is from the breeder and indicates the genetic line. This queen is from last summer and has overwintered.

I loved the ending ... as you were walking to the beautiful field of flowers the scene reminded me of the movie the Sound of Music. Your flowers are much prettier than the grass in the movie. I plan to purchase a nuc myself and was wondering, why not just place the frames directly into the new hive? Thanks.

I agree with chaszrainsford - need more Vino Farm videos As a totally brand new beekeeper - I find your videos so helpful. I like how clean and neat you keep your bee yard and how you manage your bees. So far my bees are gentle like your Italians and it is nice to go watch them and say hello (I say hello too). I should have filmed my first varroa mite test (completed last weekend) and posted - it was comical to say the least I am curious why packages seem to come from Georgia...(all around here the keepers seem to get them from Georgia as well). I am thinking the winters down there are mild enough the queens keep laying and thus there are bees to be had in the Spring whereas we will be fortunate to have any bees.. Keep posting the really interesting content.

Hi Kristen, The south is just more bee friendly climate. They don't have a winter like we do up north. Their season starts earlier and goes longer. More farms. Earlier nectar and pollen. Lots of reasons. More suppliers down there realized they had a bee advantage and just got into the business of supplying all the northern beekeeping losses.

If you coat the plastic frames with a thicker layer of wax the girls will draw it out faster especially if there is a flow, but also having the extra wax already on the plastic deters them from making cross comb, alot of our colonies dont like to bulid on the plastic frames so i use my larger colonies to establish the frame first usually only two new framess at a time also i feed them sugar syrup with all new frames unless there is already a flow on and this helps to get the frames drawn out. I think Its too much effort for a young split or packaged bees to work on new frames. We use the same debth box for brood and supers I like using wax foundations in the brood box and plastic in the honey box, having wax foundation in the brood boxes alows me to cut out queen cells from swarm prevention and use the good ones to requeen or to start nuc colonies and the plastics hold up alot better for traveling and in the extractor, we have recently started using one piece full plastic frame with foundation due the maintenance required with timber frame plastic insert and sometimes the decapper likes to eat them whereas the plastic frames glide right in

I am glad that you caught that you were inverting their home when putting in the frames! :) I was going to point it out to you otherwise. Jim, have you ever tripped while stepping over your fence? I know that I would be all the time. :D

Yup! I've tripped over the fence a few times. I'm extremely cautious when I'm carrying bees, but I get lazy stepping in and out grabbing tools. Still haven't caught a fall on video, though!

Can I ask you a question? I'm growing buckwheat too, a late season, should be blooming up when I pull the supers in a couple weeks. I was going to gather the seed for re planting next year. Was hoping you knew more about that and could do a quick tutorial on it? Sorry to ask if its not something you are interested in. I'm just not sure how to collect and prep the seed to store for next spring. Also experimenting with some of the buckwheat in a shady area... would like to see if I can make a shade resilient breed of buckwheat. So far, about 10% of the buckwheat is coming up in that area... very good.

I literally just tilled the soil and threw the seed on the ground. I did it last year, too and quite a bit of it came back on its own. I didn't harvest the seed. I just let it re-seed itself. This 1/2 acre plot was $50 worth of seed. That's pretty cheap. Cheap enough to make me not want to deal with harvesting seed! I don't have any seed harvesting equipment and I can only imagine the hours it would take to hand-harvest in order to save $50. I've tried lots of different field crops and buckwheat grows the easiest for me. Your soil may be different. Sorry if that didn't answer your question.

Help, I live in central Kentucky. I have a NUC coming Saturday morning and it is suppose to rain all day. Should I place the NUC outside near the hive or in a garage? Do I need to feed them & how? Weather looks good to install bees in hive on Sunday. Obviously, I have never had a hive before. Thanks

If they're in a nuc, I'd put them out near their hive and open the entrance. Let them fly and orient to their new location. Don't leave them sealed up in the garage. If they were a PACKAGE, I WOULD leave them inside for a day and put them in on a clear day. But a nuc is a hive. They can be out in the rain. They are used to flying, but they need to orient.

Late July nucs? Hope it was cheap. Getting frames drawn after the solstice can be a challenge. Give them a drawn frame or two from your other hives, this late in the year they are going to have a tough time building up.

Shannon Wyatt I keep getting this comment, but I don't think people realize the flow and buildup we have in August and September. Every location is different. I'm only in season three, but I have seen hives build right into October in the last two years. They have months to build.

My point was really more about getting a nuc this late. Normally you would want to get a nuc prior to your primary flow, which I'm assuming has past for you. At this point you would be better with a young queen since she is going to be more likely to lay later in the year than an older queen. But I really think you should pull a few frames from your other hives to build this hive up quick. The queen can only lay if she has a place to lay, getting them some additional comb from the other hives won't significantly affect the other hives, but it could get this one bulked up quicker.

Shannon Wyatt Giving them more drawn comb is probably best. I figured they'd build right up but it looks like they were getting robbed right after they arrived and never got situated. I'll find some drawn comb for her. This nuc is from a solid supplier and he knows the region. I am absolutely sure they'll build up OK. This s queen is from last summer, so relatively young. I have enough brood and resources floating around the bee yard that I can add to them in a month if they're lagging. I really think they'll be great, though. Same line as "New Package" queen.

Can you show how the feeder you use is built? I live in a place where many insects love to steal bees syrup, I tried different solutions but i still find a lot of ants eating syrup in my feeders Ever had this problem? Thanks BTW love your videos... very interesting

I'm so new to beekeeping that all I have is a hive I built...no bees yet. It's early July and I've been hearing I need to wait until next spring to get bees. But here you are, installing a nuc in the middle of summer. Would you recommend that I, as a rank novice, try to find a nuc this summer? Or should I wait until spring?

Definitely wait. Watch a lot of RU-vid videos this winter. (With beekeepers in a similar climate). Sign up for “bee school” classes in your town or county. Take the class. Order new bees over the winter and install them next spring. Do not start beekeeping in July.

I’ve wondered for some time on this point. With all the space and sheds you have, why is there a Thule Car Roof Pod stored in the bee yard.

I found it for free on the side of the road. It had no lock, but it was still watertight. It makes a great place to store tools and wood shims and queen excluders and other bits and bobs in a clean, mouseproof, waterproof spot. I have a couple truck other boxes placed strategically around the property with odds and ends stored in them. So when I'm out in the back field and need a pair of pruners or a hammer or some tape, I can walk over to a box instead of walking all the way back to the house. There's common things that I always need and don't feel like carrying around. So I leave them in waterproof boxes.

1:1 sugar:water by weight for most of the spring and summer. 2:1 sugar:water by weight for right before winter.

I recently got a VSH Italian queen myself. Unfortunately I couldn't find a local breeder, but she is doing great. Random question I have been meaning to ask. What do you use to seal/stain your boxes? EDIT: Also looks like robbing going on, have any robber screens to put on your splits/nucs?
