Boss has really nailed the 202 - the way it sounds, the extensive feature set and the way it looks like a CE-1, but with the RE-201 theme. I don't often gush over new pedals, but this one deserves a bit of gushing. Thanks for the demo.
@@Grungebob_Squaredance I hear you but I reckon if you put them next to each other we’ll hear a difference.. I use GT1000 & we’ve got 500 algorithms & using divides & other fx can create crazy sht but pretty sure the feel & end sound texture will be different. Would love to see a shootout of that
As an elderly guitar player i want to mention, you can achieve the classic Hank Marvin echos with this unit wich were done by the multiple heads. And it should satisfy the needs for Brian Setzer guitar sounds, he always uses the original unit.
Brian Setzer nerd here. He doesnt use the RE-201, rather he uses the RE-301 which has a significantly different response in the preamp as changed the preamp to an opamp based pre. The Toshiba TA7136 linear chip. the result is a tighter low end w a bit of upper midrange color that hits the amp diff than the loosy goosy 201 version.
Well done review of these pedals. And excellent guitar work by the way. The 202 is amazing. If anything one could criticize that it gives you too many options. LOL. That said, I'd love to own one. I'd get lost for days, and they'd find my exhausted body humped over the pedal.
Absolutely love LOVE the sound & function of the 202... I have GT1000 & funnily enough did a video on the Gt version the day before they announced these - it can do so many different spaces & craziness but this 202 is the real deal!! So freakin cool!!!
Considering that most Anderton's video uploads were shot 2 to 12 weeks ago it is weird to see one released the next day. A topical slap to the senses that. The release of the RE-2 a few weeks ago I thought was brilliant, a compact space echo yes, but the 202 just obliterates it. Now buying the RE-2 is like getting an Msport when you could've had an M3; you'll still enjoy it but not nearly as much.
I love Boss pedals. They still seem to be £100 cheaper than the American boutique stuff, what they don't know about delay isn't worth knowing. I would recommend viewers check out the Boss DD-20 Giga delay. The Space Echo is in there along with their anolog DM-2 delay plus wharp, twist, a Memoryman & a looper. Fantastic double pedal from 2003, recommended by Josh Scott. Around £100.
Hoho ... i do remember when the original "Space" Echo became available! Before we had Dynacord, Echolette and of course the WEM Copycat. My band had an 8-track-cassette mockup as an echo ... wired, but it worked 🤣 Roland achieved more than one quantum leaps: tape wear, head quality, sound quality, ... you name it ... and we all were puzzled by the sound quality 🤯 ... but most of us couldn't afford one 😵 .... it was a pro tool! So i am lucky to see these 2 reincarnations at a decent price point 😃 Thanks a lot for the demo!
At the 13 minute mark, that sounded exactly like Basketball Jones. The 201 always makes me think of Chris Isaak. This 202 looks and sounds amazing! Love you guys.
This really is one of those 'secret behind the song' pedals, I'm so glad to see this on the market in a new and compact package. Now, to save up the pennies for the RE-2...
Worst demo I've ever seen as it's the same slow rigs used every time. Use it in practical playing. This just looks like 2 grown men stoned out of their mind trying to sell a $300 pedal that sounded almost identical to a Boss D3. It's a gimmicky cash grab pedal in my opinion.
Finally got my RE-202 and thought I'd just share this. I really wanted to be able to use the reverb by itself, which you can do, but only if you turn the echo volume down MANUALLY. My hope was that when I switch off the delay, the reverb could still be on regardless of echo volume or any other settings. I'm sure there is some sort of hack by using the presets or something but this is disappointing as I always leave reverb on. If anyone has a solid workaround, let me know!
The wow & flutter knob is what really sells it, for me. There are many ways to get similar sounds out there, but that LFO that brings in chorusing & phase shifting, is secret sauce.
These sound great which is odd when you think about it because there are so many ways to get a good echo sound over the last 50 or so years nothing should really stand out any more.
Any reason why the Andertons website isn't loading? I get the standard stuff from the site displaying, but not the actual item? Seems like there's no way I can order from Andertons until that problem is fixed? Bummer...
I remember me and a couple of friends RENTING one for a weekend in the late 70s :-). I think it was branded 'Roland' back then. Jolly good fun, but I couldn't play much back then, so I didn't appreciate its sound quality.
I remember that my first and only tape echo machine was a second-hand Japanese product, I forget the name, that instead of tape used an eight-track cassette (remember those for the older people amongst us?). It used to work fine until I started to notice that a tune that I might have played a few months back suddenly started appearing halfway through a new performance. Weird! The Boss pedal looks and sounds awesome! Thanks for the great review guys...
not sure I need it, as I already have an earthquaker devices Avalanche run, (which is also, delay+reverb in a box) but damn, that age mode on the 202 sounds great!!
The last year I've bought DD20,RE20,Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe and a Boss DD3 (yesterday for Jaime Hince helicopter sounds) and...I'll definitely getting both of these,I just love them.
the old space echo box is a favourite of dub reggae producers, though they can have a mind of their own, used to know a guy who would bash the top of the box during dub mixes to get a thunder sound
Great Review ! I personally don't have time to find Hidden Features on a $400 plus Device! Who sat down and engineered this device? my god..! add another separate reverb knob selector! maybe an app for easier control..maybe make it an interface ( even my 10 year old ME_80 has that Feature). ... all being said unit sounds Great but lacks an ease of use element ! I know its a re-creation of the original with some new twists.. but Its 2024
What a great video, thanks for sharing! I'm really hoping you two are wearing ear plugs, or would consider doing so. Seeing the dB meter in the background climbing past 100 decibels made me think of it. Wishing you both many years of inspired musicianship!
Mode B on thé el cap is it’s “multi head mode” which is to say it’s space echo emulation. It’s fantastic but only covers 10% of space echo features. (It even has spring reverb emulator).
@@GNeuman i have the volante and the tape mode sounds very similar. its all about how you set it up. still like a comparison though. the roland cant do magnetic drum or studio settings that are on volante so i cant see myself ever selling it still.
@@GNeuman i see you have a volante in your videos, surprised you havent found similar settings yourself! ive found i can get most nearly every echo sound with it with tweaking. i do play with guitar mostly though and less with synths or other tools... and the impedance of your pickups hitting the front end is different than a midi instrument or synth to be fair.. i do agree it has its own magic though. im not arguing by the way, just sharing views mate 🙂
When I was in college in 1990, I was a bit of a phreaker (phone hacker). And I came across some old early 1980s PBX stuff and it were those tape loops. Where for example they stored the news, or a message box or in this specific case (it being dit h) probably phone sex chats. And I brought home two, determined to make an extremely long echo machine from one of them. I never really got to reverse engineering the massive connector and I threw it out when I moved out. Now I regret it…
BTW, the best choice (and possibly the only choice) if you want a new version of the real Space Echo is the Echo Fix from Australia. They've recreated it with some engineering improvements and should sound pretty close to what the old machines sounded like when they were new.
You can find an actual Space Echo for less. Owned one for 25 years and here’s a pro tip. The Korg Stage Echo sounds better than the Space Echo. Spring sounds better & more flexible delay setup. Sold my Space Echo and kept the Korg. The Roland just has the look. Best looking kit ever maybe. But i don’t make music to look at, so i sold it.
I pre-ordered mine here in the states, should be here the first week or so in April. Genuine question for anyone, why don’t any of these RE-202 demos have people using an expression pedal?? I’m really interested in seeing what you can do with it, I’m really surprised the boys at Andertons didn’t dig into it.
@Dave Davies So I had the RE-202 for a couple of weeks and ended up sending it back. It was neat and all, just not my thing! I can confirm that the expression pedal only banks the memory settings up or down. I now understand why nobody made that a highlight at all in their videos, ha! It would be neat if there were a way to change functions of the expression pedal rather than act like a bank up/ down feature.
Does anyone remember in which video Danish Pete makes a groovy loop and people start dancing? I've been looking constantly for it and can't find it. It's driving me crazy! I loved that video so much.
@@nvrmor023 unfortunately the unwanted commercials detract from the wanted ones. And that’s not good for us or the creators. I tried so many times but just gave up. I’ll get a big sky hehe.
Dear all. I did the update to new firmware that and Lea dotted tap tempo. Is there any way to save a preset with dotted 8 tap tempo and other presets with normal mode tap delay.? I tried to do that 1. by changing the tap to dotted notes 2. Then I created a desirable preset with doted tap tempo and I saved it to a preset number 3. Then I again did the Config number 3 process to reverse the pedal back to normal tap tempo Then the preset I saved with dotted eight, was changed to normal. In the new firmware It seems that when you change the tap tempo from the Config mode 3 , that does not only applied in manual mode Only but it goes in every preset you have already saved. I hope there is something I don’t get right here. But this is a big disappointment. Any help ? Thanks!
I’m looking for a pedal for a Moog Sound Studio 3 and I’ve been waiting extra for the release of the RE-202. Is there ny other pedal you guys would recommend instead of the RE-202 when it comes to synthesizers? Thx
I have to take my hat off to Boss. A really clever company. The new GX- 100 is amazing and affordable . This RE-201 is another winner. I cant wait for the new Katana Mk111.Keep going Boss your on a huge roll.
that sounds just like the original...when will Boss pedals be available? I'm waiting for a RV-6 and RE-2 and nobody seems to know when stocks will arrive....
I have a TC ELectronics Gauss and a Danelectro Dan-echo - both tape echo emulators, but neither as good as this. I may have to get one if I can find a used one. Pedals over $200 are out of my range.
Thanks! Is there switch in RE-2 to change the preamp setting from clean to more gain? ...and did you notice some drop of gain when switching the pedal on?
