You mentioned bug control. We have 17 hens and one rooster and we have NO mosquitos! We got lucky last year with a pullet batch, one was a rooster. He has been so cool to watch and protect his girls! Awesome video as always!

Great info from Guildbrook Farm as usual! I love the little sounds the hen make and how the roosters communicate with them. Its that time of year for bringing home chicks! We are getting ready to start meat chicks over here.

PERFECT TIMING....We're city folk on .25 acre, attempting to prep and be self sustainable as much as possible. Today, we looked at chicks. Yesterday found the spot we want to prep for their run. This and your Beginners Guide was a great addition to all the other research I've done. Didn't realize that I'm going to need to prep for the birds getting bigger in the house as much and the potential health conditions etc. Thank you Jaime, much appreciated.

I'm glad you mentioned non-gmo feed. Years ago I searched for organic chicken feed and it was not feasible for me. I just now searched for both non-gmo, and organic chicken feed and I found that Purina supplies both and there is a retailer close by to my location. I have not checked the price yet, but I would like organic feed for my animals. If not organic, then non-gmo. I'm still have some research to do on suppliers.

Here in the UK, many people rescue (not old)chickens from caged/factory farms and find that they lay extremely well once they are settled in. I know of several people who have done this and it would be my first port of call if I ever decide to get chickies. Number 1. They are free. Number 2. They will produce a lot of eggs without having to wait for them to grow. Number 3. It is giving these wonderful creatures the chance of a good life(they can live for many years and produce a lot of eggs in this time).

I started out with 3 Indian runner ducks for eggs production. I just liked the look of them. They turned out to be so friendly and playful. I tried to raise white chickens from a breeder and they all got sick and slowly died off. Got a small silkie mom from a friend and she was super cute and purred.

Decided to keep layers myself and had such a hard time finding advice. Breeds I do keep Leghorn, very productive heritage breed. Love my EEs and keep working on my line. My Pet Chicken is a broker/middleman for Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. It's much more affordable to buy them straight from Meyer. Their delivery is kinda high but they offer specials with free delivery. I believe summer 2020 is Golden Comets ship free. They show online in real time what's available which was cool. I ended up calling so I didn't screw up my order and the gentlemen working the phone line was amazing!! Took his time and made sure my order was correct. I'm 100% impressed and beyond satisfied with my purchase. For $42 I drove and picked up: 1 Barred Plymouth Rock rooster 2 Dominiques 1 Partidge Rock and then to save $ I did Hatchery Choice with: 1 Rare Breed- True Blue Cochin 1 Brown Egger- White Cochin 5 Rainbow Flock- Green Queen, Easter Egger, Mottled Brahma, White Rock, Blue Marans And as long as I donate eggs, they included a free meal maker chick, but they actually gave me 2 Buff Orpingtons for free!! 13 chickens for $42

I got suckered Into the feed store chickens just like you. I love my existing flock of girls and got pulled right in when I saw Bantam Silkies st my local store. I have always wanted a couple of silkies in my flock even though they aren't the best egg producers. They are just so pretty and unique. Unfortunately the only ones they had were straight runs and I didn't want a potential rooster that I would have to find something to do with. So I ended up getting Cuckoo Marans, Silver Lace Wyandottes and and more Ameraucanas to go with my existing rainbow layers and Ameraucanas. So now I have chicks occupying a broader in my master bathroom because it is close and secure from the cat and dogs. I love being able to feed a varied rainbow of eggs to my neices and nephews (and the rest of our extended family) who are definitely city people and have never seen anything but white eggs. I think I blew their minds when they came over the first time and i had a basket of eggs on my counter. And these new chicks will just add to that beautiful rainbow

I love having chickens. If I let them lose from the chicken coup, they're going to dig around my grape vines, berry bushes, and anywhere else they find mulch hiding bugs, etc. Every year, I have to reset my drip lines because of the chickens. But it's worth the trouble, and I'm not willing to fence everything off.

Jaime: "I like smelling my chickens." Jeremy: *giggles behind camera* I guess that is sort of akin to people who like to smell books? Lol. I'm on the autism spectrum and I get it because we often have heightened senses and one of my heightened senses is smell. Some smells make me downright sick to my stomach, but others actually cause me to calm down and relieve sensory overload. And they can sometimes be really odd smells that no one else likes or no one else really gives any thought to. For some reason, I really like the smell of yeast.

we started small, lost the first three and a half batches to - mongooses :P Once I figured it out, we got 120, and one hen did turn to fertile male, and was the dominant one for about two+ years after he/she was already about 5-6 years old. The most gentle of any rooster I've had. Chicken coop hint- I'm lazy. The bottom foot or so (of walls) is half inch hole wire fencing buried. The whole coop (20' x 30')sits on a raised bed about a foot high. this combination allows the air flow to dry the droppings keeping the air they breath dryer, which you want. Most build coops WAY too enclosed. You can also collect dry droppings at your leisure for mulching/worm castings. Thanks for the upload!

great chicken video folks :) Enjoyed Jeremy's split rail video .Nice craftsmanship ! The only thing I prefer for my place, is full length threaded hinge bolts , double nutted ( nut and washer , each side ) . Because a the second or third level adjustment over the years takes only about 30 seconds per post. Plus a i put a cable and lock on the hinge side so an intruder can't use a crescent wrench to lift off that hinged side to gain entry . Yes if both pins point up , it is a simple lift off to remove and drive on in . Even with a a chain and lock in center, in the 2 fence joined gate. Just a thought .

Great video and advice. So many things to consider regarding starting into raising chickens. Especially in urban settings, like where I am. Funny thing about exactly where I live is my block and the blocks to the West, North and East of me can have a set amount of chickens depending on the lot size. Right across the street to the south, that whole area cannot have chickens. #question, are Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks and Easter Eggers very noisy?

I buy from Meyers Hatchery. Sometimes I order for mail delivery or I go down and pick them up. They are in Ohio.

I'm a sucker for chicks. Wish i had loads of eggs everyday. Nothing beats a country style house kitchen with an overflowing basket of eggs.

@@Guildbrookfarm Doing good, My mix flock is getting older now there over 5 years old. But my New Hampshire Reds are 1 & 2+ yrs old. I have been breeding them and selling chick & hatching eggs. Trying to build my health back up is hell on trying to build a channel worth watching, I am glad things are better at your place. have a great eve.
