Hi Folks. Thank you so much for all the lovely supportive comments, as always. I realised I hadn't mentioned it in the video, but please know we will be covering the horrible block work in stone so it looks more in keeping. That is not how it will look at the end 😂 We need the chimney to be strong enough to support the new roof ridge beams, hence getting it right, and with Sam working to earn some pennies, we decided it best to get a professional chimney man in. ❤ Bec.
@@theirishhomestead great work going on there! Looking forward to seeing the new chimney and eventually the new roof. The amount of work you two are doing yourselves is absolutely incredible. You must be bushed by the end of the day and go through a lot of Rub A535 lol
My mum was born in County Meath in 1929, one of fourteen children, 7 boys and 7 girls, she didn't talk much about her childhood but did tell me they lived in a long house with the animals at one end for the warmth. They cut peat in the fields. I can't imagine how hard their lives must have been, she would have been fascinated with your work in building such a beautiful home. I'm so happy for you 💞🙏💞 Just found out from my brother that mum lived in Drumbaragh, County Meath!
I've just read your comment and had to also comment. My Mum was born in 1928 and she had 14 children, 7 boys and 7 girls. I know its not an exact match, but very close ! SNAP ! We don't call it peat, its called Turf and its harvested in the bog not the fields. I expect that she lived close to the Westmeath border as I don't think there are many bogs in Meath, the land in Meath is of a very high quality. Anyhow, thanks for sharing.
The dog peeked out from behind Toby and the pair stared at the camera. Too funny and quite a pair. They're like adorable cartoon movie characters. Just love the menagerie and the admirable way this wonderful family cares for them.
I am a 74 year old woman from Canada. My dad was a builder/carpenter in the 1940's and 1950's in Toronto. His parents were probably from the Roscommon area. It is good to watch you and your helpful companions resurrect this beautiful stone home. Bless you and your Helpers and your family. The fireplace is the heart and hearth of your home. So important. All the best. I wish you good weather and good luck.
I have a picture of me with my family on top of the Roscommon Castle ruin in my Irish knit cap & dad with his paddy cap worn proudly and my mom with a Scottish tam o' shanter just to stay warm in the brisk wind ...circa 1969 or '70.
Dessie is coming out to me next week to take a look at the very dodgy walls I’ve found under the plaster! He’s obviously doing the rounds on the RU-vid channels 😂 great to see the progress you e made this week! Fireplace will look fab with the cooker
@@theirishhomestead I’m looking forward to having him and he can figure out all my problems!! After watching your vid a second time I feel like I deffo need to open my fireplaces up major inspo!!
If you let the chickens out later the eggs won't be laid in odd places. They lay in the morning , try let them out later and they should have laid before they free range
I hate doing this. They get so stressed pacing up and down. I just can't watch them. I end up caving and letting them out. Once the cottage is done Sam will build me a bigger coop and they may prefer that.
@theirishhomestead I had one of those houses with roosting perches inside and nesting boxes . At night I'd round them up if they didn't go inside and lock them into the house over night . In the late morning I'd open the house to let them out and free range and the eggs always in the nesting boxes that way . Never had an egg laid outside the nest .
In my country we don't have fireplaces in our homes. We have no winter season. But having subscribed to a lot of channels like yours, I've come to know how essential it is to have a functioning, sturdy chimney in your home. I look forward to seeing the whole family gather around your chimney, warming yourselves with food and laughter, and the renovations in your home done beautifully. Greetings from the Far East!
You have such a great disposition. I can feel your excitement and enthusiasm as you work so hard making a beautiful home in a new country for your family. I love watching the progress and how lovely you all are.
Well done getting the sound advice & help from a professional at the point of the build you need it There is DIY & there is sound building practices in the long run See you next time
Lots of other commitments have utterly worn me out, so I need to postpone watching this one until tomorrow, Saturday. Here’s a like and a comment for the algorithm, for now.
It is nice to see all the progress. Never mind about the lost footage, these things happen. I am just happy to see things going forward. Thanks from Canada.
Well sam doesnt matter how differcult the task is you always arrive with a solution .never gives in such a grafter.once the fireplace chimney and roof is completed it hopefully will be more plain sailing.good luck with all you do as a family youll reap the rewards ten fold❤
@@theirishhomestead what's the story of how you got the collie. She's a geat addition to your family and a friend for Toby. I can't find her story in previous videos. You've worked so hard on your renovation you deserve every happiness in life.
@Fionabren55 her owner died suddenly and she needed a new home. We, of course, said we would take her on. We didn't film much or discuss it for that family's privacy. She is a wonderful dog to have around, and we love her so much.
Fantastic progress Sam.I am glad you go help for the chimney. It's better done professionally for safety reasons. Becky you are back on pointing duty .Take care and God Bless you all xxxx
My sisters hens were laying outside all over the place so she kept them in till around 1 o’clock in the afternoon then would let them out so they laid inside their coop she did this for a few weeks and know they lay in the coop all the time just to let you know if you don’t want to have to go looking for eggs all the time xx
Hi, Such a pity the footage was lost, but the photographs were good. The doorsteps, sills, stonework & chimney are all looking good. Must have been frustrating knowing the roof was covered until Dave returns in October/ November & then having to cut out a section of it & cover it during the rain & strong gusts of wind - not for the fainthearted! Well done, Sam! You clearly have had some great people assisting you - including the Hiab operator. If you don't ask for a favour, you'll never know the answer! Delighted to see you have passed 60K subscribers. 100K by the New Year? I hope so. All the best to you all. x
Thanks. Yes we definitely need the roof on and tiled before the end of November. That's the hope! It gives me anxiety as I know exactly what storms will be heading our way very soon. 😫
I finally caught up on watching all your previous videos. The new chimney looks good. A few years ago my mom and I did an Ancestry DNA test and found out that a small portion of our DNA came from Ireland. We were very surprised.
Im impressed to see someone on one of these types of channel actually opt to hire out and ensure its done right the first time. Too often I see pride before the fall. My spouse is a firefighter and seeing people DIY fireplaces and chimney without knowing how to do it right and safe is a major peeve for us. Your hard work is evident in the drastic changes you have already made. Congrats and keep up the hard work.
Thank you so much. We felt almost like we were cheating but Sam just didn't feel confident with his skills set on this task, and you're right it's such a critical element we would have been daft to just crack on for the sake of keeping up "DIY Renovation" appearances!
As a 78 year-old I'm watching this renovation with great awe from SA & envying u the guts u have.to take on súch a job. Thanks to all helping out & I'm looking foreward to next Sunday for a further update. Go well & good luck!!!
OK, I want to know how you got the dog to look around Toby on queue for that wonderful shot at the beginning. Welcome back to the Homestead, Master Tuck-pointer.
Coming along famously Sam and famz! Loving the animal family as well they’re all hanging around the house “com’on Dad when mum’s here she gets us fed early”!❤ Great job it’s going to look specky when finished!👌
Hi guys! Wow, that range is going to look superb in the fireplace. Your work regime is relentless, do you ever rest? I know that the amount of rain you get hampers your build, but, once the house is done and the garden is underway, you'll be grateful of it to grow your fruits and veggies. And that day is getting ever nearer. Thank you, as always, for a fabulous video, and for sharing your journey with us xx
Great continuity despite the technique problems - this is so fascinating. I've watched (and done) a lot of DIY, but have never seen how to build a roof around the chimney. Not sure how you got that tarp to stick to the roof, but well done, Sam! And welcome home Bec! Sam lights up when he announces you're home.
Looks awesome! Great progress. Totally agree in hiring pros for such important and big job. Plus, it's a nice break from doing things just on your own and having someone to work with. It just really helps to move things along.
Grand Euan finding the eggs just like I did has a cold of five 79 very soon lovely memory well done on all the hard work the range will be amazing tc now alllove from the oldies 🤗🤗👍👍🤗🤗👍👍
You are very lucky to be able to get large trucks on site. Our cottage is at the bottom of a very steep, narrow long lane. Everything has to be dropped at the top of it and wheelbarrow-ed down.
Love listening to the different accents. From Australia, we don't have an accent..ha ha ha ha ha the chimney will become a great feature and family hub of your home.
Greetings from Canada, so enjoyed your timelapse video I spent the week catching up with the weekly videos of your homestead, can't wait to continue watching your journey.
Good evening Bec’s and lovely family 😊 it was funny seeing Euan finding the hens Eggs lol 😂 Toby had a little check up on the chimney build 👍🏻 Becky do you ever stop 🤔 straight back and on the pointing job 😊 What a team building that fireplace 🤩 Take care love Stevie x
I absolutely love your videos. We lived 30 mins drive from Roscommon town for 7 years in a rural area. I miss it very much. I can't wait to see your finished home.
What I can’t get over is how you are doing all this work on the roof without a safety line in case you fall. In Canada a lot of workers have harnesses and safety lines on them just in case. 😊
What a great day when you found all the eggs. Must have suited the chickens to lay there in that spot. Great find, you must be relieved to have discovered their nest. ❤🙏🇦🇺🏡🎂😊
Great progress again, despite all the crazy storms we've been getting this past couple of weeks. Really glad to see you've got some great helpers. It's always good to be able to thrash out a plan of attack for each challenge when you have other people there.
So sad you lost your footage but gee what a surprise to see so much done, go you and your amazing team of helpers. Yes, tarps and Irish weather don't mix real well but you got it done. Congratulations on another awesome episode and can't wait for the next episode 😀 🌬⚒️🪚
I was very glad to find your channel last week! You have made huge progress so far, and I look forward to seeing everything take shape as the work progresses. Keep up the excellent work!
By the way Sam, I'll trade my weather for yours right now, I'm dealing with 105 degree heat and all the sunshine I don't want, I'll take chilly temperatures and rain in trade 😂
Welcome home Becca! Sam that stinks about the lost footage, but at least you got the pictures, and great job on the progress! The cat playing in the sand in the beginning was adorable as well. 😊❤
Your dog being a real shepherd's dog he seems to be at his wits ends with this donkey that simply doesn't think of moving. It's so interesting to see these ingrained habits of different species.
Chimney looks really good! Well done! The door steps too. Who gets to get up on the roof and build the rest of the chimney? Are you going to nail Desi's shoes to the floor to keep him from leaving? Lol. Ya gotta love a man with his own crane! Nice of him to move those tiles for you. That saved you some hours. How long does the chimney have to cure before you can use it? Screw the camera! You do it safely and show us after! I'd rather have a whole Sam than ten minutes of footage. I'll pray for very low wind and rain that passes over you and hits the neighbors down the road! Be well and stay safe!
It's really coming together now. It's looking good. It will be nice when you finally can do all the finishing touches. Still a long way to that. That crane driver guy was awesome, it's hard finding people who will help. Keep on going! Can't wait to see this through to completion 😊😊
