Say bonjour to the new Citroen ë-C3 - a car that could well set a new benchmark for affordability in the small electric car sector.
The e-C3 is about the same size as the forthcoming Volkswagen ID2 and its overall footprint is no larger than the current C3. But while the VW doesn’t go on sale until 2025, you’ll only have to wait until the start of 2024 for this car. Which is great for impatient people like us!
Join Nicola as she drives the new Citroen ë-C3. What do you think? Will Citroen have a winner on its hands? As always, we love you hear your views, so let us know what you think in the comments below.

I really hope people buy this car. Often the we say we want a small cheap car, but we often end up buying a big SUV.

Speaking of which, Citroen is bringing their Aircross version of the eC3 later this year, which is a bit bigger (about 4,40M in length) but also comes with up to 7 seats, meaning it's both an SUV and a small van. And I doubt it will be that much more expensive than the eC3, probably 25-30k£

Good to see Citroën is already in the market with a rather convincing proposal for reasonably priced individual motoring, before non-EU carmakers flood the market. I really like it and I am certain this can become an important pillar for the future of Citroën. 👏

Good looking car inside and out and seems to have avoided the 'budget' feel more successfully than an MG4 from what I could see from the video. Great that it's manufactured in Europe as well. Yep manufactured in Slovakia so it is Europe but poor Europe. Slovakia. There is nothing wrong with the inside if an MG4. I have been in one and I can tell you the materials in it are very good even better than some more well known brands. I bet the materials in the MG4 feel a lot nicer then what's in this Citroen E-C3 interior.

I currently have a 1.2 (non-turbo) C3 and the 0-60 is equally awful, but as it's mostly used for city driving I am more interested in the 0-30 - and on the C3, that's extremely quick before all the power goes. It's not great for joining a motorway on an uphill slip, but otherwise I'm not concerned about that. The e-C3 seems like the perfect replacement for existing C3 owners, which given that's one of the best selling B-segment cars should mean Citroen are going to sell a LOT of these. Possibly the only thing that will put some off is not the range being perceived as too short, but actually too long (hear me out...!). I can see a lot of people waiting for the cheaper model with the smaller battery as even 130-150 on a cold day is more than the 20 miles most people drive. This is a decent, comfortable, practical car - for some the main car, for others a second car - and what the market has been crying out for to ramp up EV sales now pricing is within the reach of the ordinary person. If these go on lease for £160-200 a month, the fact it may be 2p a mile for those charging at home on a suitable tariff, it will be far cheaper than a petrol equivalent. Until now, those doing low mileages have struggled to find a way to break even or benefit from the lower energy cost vs price of the car.

Thank you for the review. This car shows just how many of things in more expensive cars you simply do not need, yet still produces a car that is worth driving. I really admire that. Do I want one? No. But could I live with one? Yes.

YESSSS. . . Best video EVER 😁 Thanks, we were waiting for several years for an EV around €25.000. We bought the MAX version with 11kW charger, with the black body / white roof. It has the LFP batteries build by SVOLT, range is 320km, but testers experience that the 320km will be close to real world range (their riding style :) ). No, it is not a 0 to 100 in 5 sec EV, but that was not what we were looking for. It is 11sec, and therefor very economical, also due to the relative low 1400kg. With the 100kW DC charger it is enough for longer travels (we have time to spare) We payed €26.000 due to the last year of €2.950 subsidies in the Netherlands. SUPER happy, will be delivered in October.

This is what the market needs right now. Competitively priced commuter EV's, capable of doing that 20 to 30 mile commute each weekday..... And with a home charger and an off-peak tariff, your charging costs will be £5 to £6 per week, at most.... This and Renault's new R5 will shake the lower end EV market up....

Fantastic car. Very very impressed. Ticks just about every box you could want for a car or EV. And £22k is CHEAP if you look at the price of any car nowadays EV or ICE. Just no frunk and 1 pedal drive but otherwise I just hope this sells loads for Citroen. And charge port on the best side as can use Tesla SC’s without bay blocking, as loads and loads of those now open to all in the UK (60+ sites now ) and very reasonably priced compared to all other chargers networks. This is proper cheap motoring car right here. And it’s from Europe & not China as well.

Thanks for a good honest review. I’m sick of motoring journalists droning on about high speed handling and whining about low 0-60 times when most people are just after good solid transport options that won’t break the bank. Love the simplicity of this, especially the cheaper one which comes with a phone cradle and no screen which will probably date really quickly. Would be nice to get a review of the differences to see if it feels comparatively low rent.

If your situation prompts you to be in need of a car, but you don’t do many miles, and you’re lucky enough to be able to accommodate home charging facilities, the combination of a lower priced car such as this eC3 (or a Dacia Spring EV, for instance) is more than capable of reliably matching to your lifestyle. In fact I’d argue this is the case for a large percentage of the population, but due to (often false) mass media coverage arguing against them many people unfortunately wouldn’t touch them out of principle - which is a shame, because they are very good pieces of equipment. A bonus point (in my view) with EVs is that they’re bringing up the level of build quality for the average car to be of higher standards than previously found, which always helps.

Why worry about an electrified boot lit, especially at this price? I have never thought “on my next car, I must have a boot that can open and close itself”; it’s a pointless gadget that adds weight and cost for people who just can’t be bothered to close a boot but can close a car door. And for those who say “if you’ve got limited mobility they’re a must” I do understand that use case: but why do the manufacturers then insist on putting the button to close the boot on the boot lid itself which then, for most people with limited mobility, can’t reach it?

There's so much room under that front hood, it shouldn't be a problem to put some cable basket under there. And the fact that it's not there from the factory is probably just an effort to keep the price down. I certainly commend the LFP battery. For the smaller sizes, this technology is preferable. I just hope it has a good BMS since they ditched the heat pump. For me this size car is not enough, but I welcome another solid addition to the EVs lineup.

The only thing I will say though is I’d like a bit more range (the e208 claims 214 miles but never does more than 180) and if they brought out an ‘extended range’ version with a slightly bigger battery for around £25k, that would be perfect. What I get from all my Aussie friends, is that they dislike small cars. More like Americans, they like big V8 engines, huge heavy pickup trucks and fast straight-line rubber burners.

There are other reasons. Look for prince engine issues, then for Puretech engine issues.

Great review! I love this car and have been looking forward to a review. I only hope it comes to Australia before the plethora of Chinese brands take hold. There are 12 new brands from China coming in ‘25! and keeps its low price. A well thought out package. Well done Citroen.

Like it. But needs heated/ccoled battery and pre-warming if it wants to make the most of the range. Sensible option but where's the passenger door bins? And no central rear seat passenger binnacle? Perhaps a little too cheap? Waiting for the more comprehensive review...

The latest LFP batteries will do OK up to -20C. At lower temps the charging will get a lot slower. In most western European countries though, from Denmark down to Spain, that temp will never be seen again, except on very high altitudes.
@drfisheye
@drfisheye Месяц назад
Battery temp has nothing to do with range. Only with charging speed. And this isn't a car for doing long travels with, so charging speed doesn't really matter.

Nice and all, but don't hate me on saying that, with this range some Plug-in Hybrids are more interesting to me simply for peace of mind. Using on EV mode for a similar real world range but having the fallback of a combustion engine if you need. Anyways, good to see the brands risking it, that's what we need to get there.

Great that EVs are becoming more affordable. But for 22k I suggest you pick up a used Kia/Hyundai. Someone else has already eaten the majority of the depreciation for you. You will get manufacturer warranty on the car and the battery (if serviced properly - and most will be as they are company or motability cars) - and it'll feel nearly new. I got my 21plate top spec Kona for 20k with only 6k miles on it in February 2024.

Yes my parents have just got a 71 plate Kona electric premium with 10k miles on it for £18k and a full 5 year warranty. A very good car, comfortable, very powerful and lots of toys. Also has a 280 mile range and makes me very jealous when I drive it coming from my Zoe

I agree if buying, but I'm likely to lease this and I currently have a C3 which is £147 a month, and the top-spec model. I expect the leasing companies will bulk buy the top spec model too and I can hopefully pay under £200 for the e-C3. If I was to buy, I'd wait and get a second hand model with low mileage and expect to pay well under £20k. I've only actually bought a brand new car once in my life! Always smarter to get used, even with near delivery mileage.

I only drive about 500 miles a year... not every year, obviously sometimes I need to do a lot more driving, a few years back i done just over 700 miles in a single year. This is perfect for me; Not fussed about speed, I rarely go over 20mph where I live, I like a deeper load lip on the boot, means when I open the boot my wine does not roll out and smash. And comfort is top of my list of wants, I'd have a RR if they done one in my price bracket. Sure I could go a little upmarket and get a second hand Enyaq, ID 3 or 4, maybe even a polestar or Volvo (I do love me a Volvo/Polestar)... or go and get one of the new Skodas or Kias (Kia EV3🤤), and though I like the idea of driving a £40k+ car, I can't justify it.... so maybe I'll get something like this, or go used, but my choices are starting to improve.

I would think a Nissan Leaf would be a perfect car for you. I drive mine around town, never driving more than 35 miles from home (70 miles round trip). It has a deep trunk (boot), so your wine should be safe. In nearly 8 years of ownership, we've managed to put over 37,000 miles on our Leaf. We always charge at home and our cost to charge is anywhere between $4 and $8 per month. It really is a great little runabout.
@drfisheye
@drfisheye Месяц назад
With that low milage, an old used petrol car would be better. Manufacturing battery packs generates quite a bit of CO2. If you only do short bits, that CO2 never gets compensated. Or a used first generation Zoe or VW e-UP something.
@Finglebat
@Finglebat Месяц назад
@@drfisheye You should tell Sadiq Khan that... 😆 I have a perfectly good, well maintained, 'very low' mileage vehicle that I planned to use for the next 15 or so years, but he wants to charge me £12.50 a day to go and visit my elderly parents, go to the hospital or pop to the shops, so is forcing me to do more harm to the environment and the kiddywinks lungs, by scrapping it and buying an alternative which will no doubt put more pollutants into the air through it's manufacture or mining for rare earth minerals. Not only am I personally worse off financially, but I'm aware I'm doing more damage to the environment than I would if I were left to keep my car. His ULEZ policy is so poorly thought out in my opinion, alas, one size does not fit all. My plan was to wait another year after these affordable models are released, VW ID2, Citroen eC3, Skoda Elroc/Epic, etc. and see if I can pick one up at a reasonable price. Though I would love an eUP/Mii, I liked the boxy size as it it gave me enough headroom (for my long back), I do have some height and width restrictions and accessibility problems I need to overcome, but the eUp was too small in the rear for my other requirements, Zoe I did not fit in ether, not enough headroom, especially in the rear 😥. @darkenergy5686 I don't think I tried the Leaf, I might go and check it out, thanks.

If you want cheap and cheerful, I think the mid spec Dacia Spring is better value if you can live with a ~100 mile range. Otherwise this seems decent enough.
