I do agree that Master Kim has already passed away in the present day and most of his scenes will be purely flashbacks. Yes, the closest match up we can get is Uncle Sato and Master Kim and I think it fits to see the origin of the rivalry between Sato and Master Kim. Taking place a few years following World War 2 , somewhere between 1946 to 1950 prior to Korean War in 1951, the news about Mr. Miyagi receiving the Medal of Honor became the biggest headline that everyone in Okinawa keeps on going on and on. Hearing about this, Master Kim Sun Yung and his star pupil George Turner visited Okinawa in recruiting soldiers but what he really wanted is to challenge Mr Miyagi right there. Master Kim must have been expecting that Mr Miyagi will return to Okinawa and start his own dojo. Much to his disappointment, Master Kim would eventually find out that it is Sato Toguchi who is the military instructor as soon as he arrives in Okinawa, not Mr. Miyagi. The moment Sato asked him why he visited his dojo, Master Kim expresses in disappointment that he doesn't get to have a spar with Mr. Miyagi as he looks at Sato as not worth his time of showing his skills as a martial artist by calling Sato's best friend a coward for not showing up. Of course, Sato challenges Master Kim out of defending the honor of his best friend. This clearly shows a different side of Sato: he is willing to confront anyone who dares to insult Miyagi because both of them were trained by Mr Miyagi's father

Maybe we’ll see some back stories of Master Young with Kreese and Silver. Also, Chozen had no respect for Kim Sun Young, perhaps something happened between them and we will see it

Hopefully they write in Kim Sun-Young having beef with Miyagi's father or with Sato's family. Chozen was familiar with Master Kim in season 5.

When Chozen and Johnny showed up at Topanga and saw Kim, she appeared to have been aware of Chozen’s reputation. They may have crossed paths before given family history.

I think Master Kim shows up in flashback scenes 'cause Chozan mentioned that his uncle Sato had a history against Master Kim, maybe from previous Sakai Taki tournaments in Asia before becoming global.

So, the Mountain Kim's grand daughter climbed was in South Korea. I wonder if he is a veteran of the Korean War? Maybe he witnessed his friends die in battle and adopted a no mercy approach to fighting. Don't forget South Korea is really a Tiger Nation, the way they transformed there country from Ashes to a major leading Democracy in the world is remarkable. There is a lot to play off of on this subject.

KEN COLE: This is very awesome and exciting. I am really looking forward to learning more about Master Kim and the kind of threat that he posses especially since he's on Miyagi's level of fighting. I also have a theory that in the flashbacks that we will be getting of Master Kim that we might get more of his relationship with Sato (because as Chozen revealed they did know each other & didn’t like each other) & maybe even we might have a flashback of a Sato vs Master Kim in a fight to the death with Sato winning & as well as giving us explanation of how Master Kim died because we know how those fights end: The winner being the one that’s not dead

It were plenty of hints that Master Kim Sun Yung, the originator of the no mercy philosophy will play a big role in Season 6 and I think it's a great opportunity for us to dive in what really started the rivalry between Master Kim and Uncle Sato. The biggest guess I have is that it has something to do with Kim Da-Eun's childhood flashbacks in which she is torn between choosing how Tang Soo Do should be utilized. I always have a feeling that her father and grandfather have complete opposite philosophies because I get the feeling that her dad was abused by her grandfather for not living up to his expectations. It got up to a point wherein Sato becomes a better father figure to her dad and his teachings from Miyagi-Do is why he branched off from Master Kim's no mercy teachings. I think that the rivalry between Uncle Sato and Master Kim mirrors exactly as that of Daniel and Johnny wherein the son of a Tang Soo Do master would rather learn from his arch rival's karate style.

Thanks for the update, Ken! Do you reckon Johnny might have rigged the tournament in 2018, because the referee seemed biased and kept the match going even when Miguel kept going for Robby's injured shoulder. Just curious, thanks again for the update.

I hope I'm not the only one who wishes for this to happen but I think that the reigning champion of the Sekai Taikai is Chozen's student who was recruited by Sensei Kim Da-Eun as part of her revenge because it's probably her motivation that turning Chozen's number 1 student to be Cobra Kai's top pupil is because years ago, her own father rejected the Tang Soo Do lessons of her grandfather became Sato's Miyagi-Do champion and in her eyes, that is the perfect revenge.

Someone told me in the comment that he worked with the writers of cobra kai and Sato and Miyagi couldn't beat master Kim together that's why he said "some always know more" in the karate kid 1. And he also told me that we will see in cobra kai season 6 that he almost kills Miyagi.

I've only seen him in Dexter as Vince Masuka, a guy who is... kinda pervy and not to be taken seriously, if I remember correctly. It will be interesting to see him as Master Kim Sung Yung.

Back in 2004, C. S. Lee (full name Charles Seunghee Lee) was a voice in GTA San Andreas. I am usually not a gamer, but the Grand Theft Auto games are simply legendary. And San Andreas was a milestone, this game was way ahead of its time. And something in general (not for Ken, just in general, maybe the one or the other likes to know it): If you spell the names of the two Kim's according to official romanizations rules of Korea, the "Revised Romanization of Korean" and "McCune-Reischauer", its Kim Daeun and Kim Sunyung. There are two ways: Sun-yung (allowed to distinguis the two syllables, but dont capitalze the y) Sunyung (recommended) The CK writers seem to be unaware of it but its not a problem, there also many things i dont know. Daeun and Sunyung are their given names, they dont have middle names (Da Eun and Sun Yung looks like that) or doube-barelled given names (Da-Eun and Sun-Yung look like that). This method "Kim Sun-Yung" and "Kim Da-Eun" was done 50 or 100 years ago, but not today anymore since it only leads to confusions in the west. You can see it on the actor who plays Sunyung. C S Lee's full name is Charles Seunghee Lee, and not Charles Seung-Hee Lee. You can also see it in this korean pop K-Pop scene, most of them spell their given name together (like Jimin, not Ji-Min, etc..), and the world headquarter of Taekwondo, the TDK legends have golden plaques there, and they are spelled like Choi Honghi (not Hong-Hi).
